Pony themed books for 10 year old DD

Hi, my soon to be 10 year old has just got a glowing report from school which I'm really pleased about. One area she's not so hot on though is reading. She can read fine, is up to standard, comprehension fine etc but her reading isn't as strong as everything else. I'm a big reader as are our whole family really but she finds books "boring." She does read daily and always reads before bed but the love isn't there. She doesn't get wrapped up in the stories and imagine them in her head as scenes. She prefers factual books to stories unless she's being read to. She's pony mad and I'm hoping to find her some horse based novels to get stuck into. Can anyone suggest any please? I've bought her a factual horse book for Christmas which she asked for but I really want to encourage her to curl up with a book and get totally absorbed in the stories like I do. I feel so sad she doesn't have that experience but I know everyone is different.

I'd steer clear of Black Beauty if she's of a sensitive disposition. It's up there with War Horse for tugging on the heart strings!

I agree with most of the above choices, but note that nobody has mentioned Silver Snaffles by Primrose Cumming. It was reprinted by Fidra Books about 10 years ago, and they're like gold dust, fetching ridiculously high prices secondhand, however I believe there is talk of a reprint if you contact the publisher. It's a truly magical tale that is somehow timeless. Jenny, who wants a pony of her own, goes through the dark corner of Tattles the cart pony's stable using the password Silver Snaffles....to a riding school run by horses that speak, existing in a horrid smoggy world of nasty, uncaring humans... bit like today really.

I was lucky and picked up a secondhand copy for pence in a book sale at a church many years ago, now worth 100x what I paid for it !

KM Peyton - Fly by Night
Absolutely fantastic book I’ve just managed to get it from Amazon
Honest if your daughter is pony mad then Fly By Night is one she will love

I've just looked up silver snaffles and argh! at the price! I'll look at fly by night.

Which were the ones set in Virginia. About a group of kids and their horses?

Also, since you are all here, does anyone remember a book about a girl who keeps a horse on a houseboat? She was called October. I think.

Tia.

Christine Pullein-Thompson's Phantom Horse is set in Virginia. Fantastic series!

Moorland Mousie by Golden Gorse, although I don't suppose it's still in print ( does feature stag hunting).

The pony called Kubla Khan was in The Trick Jumpers by Josephine P-T iirc.
