Pony themed books for 10 year old DD

Hi, my soon to be 10 year old has just got a glowing report from school which I'm really pleased about. One area she's not so hot on though is reading. She can read fine, is up to standard, comprehension fine etc but her reading isn't as strong as everything else. I'm a big reader as are our whole family really but she finds books "boring." She does read daily and always reads before bed but the love isn't there. She doesn't get wrapped up in the stories and imagine them in her head as scenes. She prefers factual books to stories unless she's being read to. She's pony mad and I'm hoping to find her some horse based novels to get stuck into. Can anyone suggest any please? I've bought her a factual horse book for Christmas which she asked for but I really want to encourage her to curl up with a book and get totally absorbed in the stories like I do. I feel so sad she doesn't have that experience but I know everyone is different.

King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry

Gotta love Google. I forgot about it until now and there was no Google 20 odd years ago when I last remembered! On my Xmas list.

I'm not fond of real horses but I loved pony stories as a girl around your Dds age late 90s-early 00s. Favourites were:

Saddle Club Series (acquired a load from a library sale and the series is long, so if she likes them ebay is likely your friend).
Hollywell Stables (can't remember who wrote them- Samantha something?- but she's written more horsey series I think one called Riding School ).
Wish for A Pony & sequels.
Flambards (which I still adore, there's the tv series, too if she's keen!) along side other KM Peyton horse books.
An american series from my school library, called Rosettes. I think one was called Cara's Wish if it helps you find them?
Treasuries of pony stories from various publishers. Amazon or eBay will show them.
Mallory Towers- horsey characters pop up & some plots feature them prominently.

Oh- And of course Black Beauty & Silver Brumby!!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 08/11/2018 00:17

Rosettes author is Joanna Campbell, who also wrote the "thorough bred" series.

I loved the Jill books as a kid! Still living for the author's hilarious sly digs at children's authors like Enid Blyton for writing soppy stuff like Jill's mum does.

Biggles398 · 08/11/2018 00:21

There are some new books about Valegro that are quite cute. Written by/with Carl Hester. I think there are 3 in the series, possibly 4

Jane Badger Books website is also amazing- It's a website dedicated to pony books, in case there's not enough on here! I'll stop now Smile

LostPlatypus · 08/11/2018 00:53

Another recommendation for the Jinny series here. I loved them as a kid.

My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead and the Green Grass of Wyoming by Mary O'Hara
Follyfoot and the rest of the trilogy by Monica Dickens
World's End trilogy by Monica Dickens
Flambards trilogy(horses and the first world war) by KM Peyton
War horse by Michael morpurgo (more horses and world war one)
Black Swift (horses and the English civil war)
The autobiographical books by Monty Roberts

DrPeppersPhD · 08/11/2018 01:54

My secret unicorn is pretty good, loved it as a child.

DrPeppersPhD · 08/11/2018 01:56

Also the third book in the Laura Marlin Mysteries is great and about horses.

RhK88 · 08/11/2018 08:25

Heartland books are supposed to be good I haven't read them myself though

PerverseConverse · 08/11/2018 09:04

I've just bought her the Princess and the Foal off eBay and have had a look at My Secret Unicorn which I think she'll love.

The Silver Brumby set were wonderful when I was a pony mad kid. Generally upbeat. Black beauty was a bit of a downer!

MaluCachu · 08/11/2018 18:25

The Book People have some fab books for kids, the prices are brilliant too, ordered lots from there for mine

CheeseAndOnionIceCream · 08/11/2018 18:45

I loved the books by the Pullein-Thompson sisters when I was around that age and pony mad still am. Also, the Jill books (Jill's gymkhana and I had two ponies etc) by Ruby Ferguson,if you can suspend your disbelief at the fact that her mother is short of money, yet Jill can somehow afford to keep TWO ponies. Grin

InProgress · 08/11/2018 18:52

The Jinny series started with "For love of a horse" author is Patricia Leitch.

InProgress · 08/11/2018 18:53

I also used to like the Thelwell horse joke books.

ThistleAmore · 08/11/2018 18:58

I was a massive fan of the 'Jinny and Shantih' series, by Patricia Leitch, when I was a pony-daft kid - mostly because they weren't just about posh English girls riding fat ponies bareback down leafy Cotswold lanes (something which I, as a decidedly non-posh Scottish kid, couldn't really identify with), but had an element of mysticism and almost folk horror about them.

The Eventer Trilogy, by Caroline Akrill, was terrific too, but I think more for younger teenagers rather than your daughter's age. Worth keeping in mind, though.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 08/11/2018 19:02

...I think Im in heaven this is bringing back so many memories for me (was the pony mad 10 year old). All I can think of is Black Beauty, anything Pullein-Thompson, My Friend Flicka...

There was a book I loved that had a pony in in named Kubla Khan or something very similar. Its driving me nuts I cant remember. I think they were three kids and they all had ponies. I just remember enjoying it.

inthekitchensink · 08/11/2018 19:05

Jinny & Shantih
Jinny & Shantih
Jinny & Shantih!
‘‘Tis amazing.

CAAKE · 08/11/2018 19:10

Panky and William and Panky in the Saddle

Star of Wild Horse Canyon

Jill's Gymkhana

And Jinny and Shantih of course!

SweetLathyrus · 08/11/2018 19:13

'Flight' by Vanessa Harbour, just out this year, brilliant.
