Pony themed books for 10 year old DD

Hi, my soon to be 10 year old has just got a glowing report from school which I'm really pleased about. One area she's not so hot on though is reading. She can read fine, is up to standard, comprehension fine etc but her reading isn't as strong as everything else. I'm a big reader as are our whole family really but she finds books "boring." She does read daily and always reads before bed but the love isn't there. She doesn't get wrapped up in the stories and imagine them in her head as scenes. She prefers factual books to stories unless she's being read to. She's pony mad and I'm hoping to find her some horse based novels to get stuck into. Can anyone suggest any please? I've bought her a factual horse book for Christmas which she asked for but I really want to encourage her to curl up with a book and get totally absorbed in the stories like I do. I feel so sad she doesn't have that experience but I know everyone is different.

Jinny at Finmory books are fabulous by Patricia Leitch. I still have all my original ones 40 years later ☺️ I still read them on occasion

fanks · 08/11/2018 19:18

My kids are obsessed by Heartlands, they have read all the books and watched the Netflix series

tattychicken · 08/11/2018 19:22

All of the above, which I loved as a child, plus all the Pippa Funnell series which both my DDs have loved. More up to date and are educational without being dull or preachy.

Oh this has brought back so many happy book memories. I was also horse mad at 10. My now 10 year old DD is also horse mad...

Had totally forgotten about the Jinny series - fab!!
The Silver Brumby series is a MUST, so beautiful!
Black Beauty is lovely but there is quite a lot of old-fashioned language in which might prove a sticking point if your DD isn't a mad keen reader.
The Racehorse who Wouldn't Gallop is much more modern and a good, easy read.

DareIAdmit · 08/11/2018 19:58

My favourites are:
K.M Peyton- the swallow series
Walter Farlzy- the black stallion series
Josephine Pullein-Thompson- six ponies and I had two ponies in particular but she wrote many
Black beauty, son of black beauty
Victoria Eveleigh- katy's exmoor pony series (more up to date as first book published 2002)

There's a couple of series I'm missing, one was about a unicorn that everyone thinks is a normal horse. Can't remember it's name, in one of the books it helps a horse that had a fear of jumping escape a burning stable and then after that it wasn't afraid to jump.

DareIAdmit · 08/11/2018 20:02

Someone else mentioned it, it was My Secret Unicorn

bigtimer · 08/11/2018 20:06

Black beauty a real classic

DareIAdmit · 08/11/2018 20:08

Oh and Jackie won a pony! I was always envious of her for that, wished I could have won a pony myself

kiwiblue · 08/11/2018 20:13

Flambards by KM Peyton - love them. Still read them as an adult!
Also the Jill books and Follyfoot Smile

kiwiblue · 08/11/2018 20:15

There's a new book out set in modern day fkambards

Ooh- what is this? Googled and couldn't find anything

whymewhyme · 08/11/2018 20:21

I went to pound land the other day and there were lots of horsey book in! I picked up a few myself for my nephew who loves his pony related books!

Plessis · 08/11/2018 20:48

Not sure if that's worked. It's called. The key to flambards

Vampiratequeen · 08/11/2018 20:49

Sorry carrying on from my previous post, they have the pony-mad princess range for 7+ and princess Polly and the pony in the young readers range level 4. They are really good books.

PerverseConverse · 08/11/2018 21:53

I missed the whole pony thing when growing up and am quite scared of them! I liked my little pony but obviously nothing like the real thing. I feel like I e missed out an essential part of girlhood.

My dds really didn't like the Jinny books. I don't remember liking them much either.

Santaclarita · 09/11/2018 18:34

Trust me op, its probably best to avoid owning the real thing unless you like essentially setting fire to your own money. Grin

PerverseConverse · 09/11/2018 18:51

@Santaclarita I haven't any money to set fire to so I'm safe from that She might grow out of it, she might not. I'm encouraging her into a career of animal care of some kind. Maybe veterinary nurse or horse physio or something animal related as she adores them. Being a vet requires years of study and excellent grades so I'd hate her to be pressured by that but if she decides to aim for that then great. She's "flying" at school according to her teachers so might be feasible.for now she's horse crazy and I'll do what I can to incorporate horses into her life.

The Island Stallion Series by Walter Farley which has a crossover book with the Black Stallion.
Misty of Chincoteague series by Marguerite Henry
The Silver Brumby series by Elyne Mitchell
The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West by Mary Stanton = a bit of a different type of book, but very good.
