To ask if you have lights on in your house after dark if you're out?

I walked back from work about 6.30pm and I was surprised how many houses were in pitch darkness.

Do you leave them on or have a timer?

We have timers. I don't like coming home to a dark house. That's the reason more than security really. But the darkness keeps catching me out just now, it gets darker earlier and earlier and my timers are never right.

MissConductUS · 07/11/2018 20:02

We have a few florescent or LED lights we leave on. They use so little electricity we don't bother with a timer.

Magik1 · 07/11/2018 20:02

Yes we try to have a light on by about 4:30 with a timer, but mostly so that the cat isn’t left in darkness Grin

WelshPooch · 07/11/2018 20:02

We have two on timers. One upstairs where the curtains are kept semi-drawn all day, and one in the kitchen which is at the back of the house and lack of drawn curtains don't give it away, ifyswim.

Yes. We were burgled many moons ago, and the police said it wouldn’t have happened in that case if we’d had a light on.

Villanellesproudmum · 07/11/2018 20:03

I leave the lights and the TV on, for the dog and cats.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 07/11/2018 20:04

i have lamps on a timer in the sitting room, my lamp in the bedroom is rarely off unless I am asleep, and since I am pretty much the only adult in the house that is aware light switches can also go off chances are another bedroom and the kitchen and the porch will be lit up like the proverbial.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/11/2018 20:04

We have lights all over our house. Keeping a house pitch black males no sense to me.

minniemoll · 07/11/2018 20:07

I bought some smart plug adapters, which have lamps plugged into them. I've got them programmed to come on at sunset and turn off at midnight, so I don't have to keep adjusting them as it gets lighter and darker. Plus I can turn the lamps off with my phone if I go to bed early. I love them.

ajandjjmum · 07/11/2018 20:09

We have timers, but also leave lots of lights on if we go out in the dark.

wineoclockthanks · 07/11/2018 20:11

We were also burgled many years ago and the house had been in darkness (we were away and the bulb had blown on the timer light) so I know I'm a bit paranoid.

Yes we have a lamp in the living room and one in the bedroom on timers. If we go out we don't like coming back to a dark house plus I don't like to think of our dogs being there in the dark.

It is also an invitation to burglars I think although I doubt they would risk our dogs attacking them!

I always find it odd that so many houses are pitch black in the evenings and it is obvious who is home and who isn't. Also if a house is in darkness evening after evening it is pretty obvious they are away

Windgate · 07/11/2018 20:13

As a little girl I had an 8 hour night light candle in a saucer in my bedroom. My parents always had timed lights so I do too.

Beebumble2 · 07/11/2018 20:15

We have Hive and turn the lights off and on randomly, in different rooms.

OoMatron · 07/11/2018 20:18

No, leave to go to work and come home to a dark house about 5pm. I don’t feel the need to have a timer. We live on a main road, well lit with lots of people and traffic. I suppose you could class the fish tank as a light?! Pretty obvious to a burgler we are not in as both our cars would be gone. You only have to watch our house for a few days to know our routine with work.

OoMatron · 07/11/2018 20:19

We do have timers when we go on holiday though!

TooManyPaws · 07/11/2018 20:19

I've got about six lamps on timers dotted around the house. Plus large and noisy dogs, as well as outside lights which pick up movement.

cheesefield · 07/11/2018 20:20

We have hive so we set them to go on and off at set times whether we're in or not.

sickmumma · 07/11/2018 20:21

No we don't have timers but if going out before it gets dark I will pull blinds and turn a couple of lights on - I wouldn't probably bother with the lights but we have a dog.

BlueJava · 07/11/2018 20:24

I've noticed that every time I come home in the dark all of our lights are on in all of the rooms. Mostly because we have teenagers and no timer though! :)

MrsStrowman · 07/11/2018 20:27

We have a timer lamp in the living room near the front window and an outside porch light that comes on when it gets dark

VisitorsEntrance · 07/11/2018 20:29

Most of my lights are Philips Hue so I turn them on when it gets dark, even if I’m out.

TokenGinger · 07/11/2018 20:29

I was burgled last Christmas when we went away for a few days. House was in darkness.

Now I have Hive light bulbs all over the house that each have individual timers set differently every single day so there is no pattern. I also have a plug in light on a timer which simulates the flickering of a television so from outside it looks like somebody is inside watching tv.

Birdsgottafly · 07/11/2018 20:34

I've bought my rabbits in for the winter, so like a pp, my lights are on for my Pets.

Previously to Pets, I left them off.

watchmefly · 07/11/2018 21:47

I’ve always left a light on in the house when I’m out and I always leave the porch light on overnight on a timer and set the burglar alarm.

I didn’t know that you get timers for lights inside the house that automatically switch themselves on at sunset so I shall take a look at that!

I’m never sure what to do with curtains and blinds when I’m away though, usually leave them half closed but think that’s maybe a bit of a give away, especially at night?
