Am I right about reasonable doubt?

Ah yes, I am correct.

I actually meant the slant of the defence about the underwear not the actual rape but report away. Women in Ireland are legally not entitled to autonomy over their own bodies anyway. That's not offensive, it's a fact.

Solenti · 07/11/2018 16:30

I'm open mouthed here. This is horrific! What the actual fuck. I wear matching underwear and lace thongs/skimpy underwear daily, because I LIKE to wear them for myself. I don't wear them as I plan to have sex with people, in fact only I see them except maybe my husband later on if I get changed for bed in front of him.
I feel desperately sorry for the women involved. Fucking archaic nonsense - the old "she was asking for it" line. I despair sometimes.

KC225 · 07/11/2018 16:31

Shocking. How sad that young girl is let down like this.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/11/2018 16:32

Heaven forbid and it makes me go ice cold to even say this but If that was my daughter I'd cut it off very slowly and very very painfully my self. I'm not afraid to admit that to anyone.
Angry doesn't even begin to cover it.

What the you talking about?

OlennasWimple · 07/11/2018 16:33

FFS

Well, I believe her and hope she can find a way to re-group and carry on

Nesssie · 07/11/2018 16:34

IStandWithPosie Their abortion laws I presume.

ZackPizzazz · 07/11/2018 16:35

What the you talking about?

Women in Ireland are not permitted to terminate their pregnancies - thus, they are not actually given sovereignty over their bodies.

IStandWithPosie · 07/11/2018 16:36

Ireland has just voted to legalise abortion. There was a referendum. It was kind of a big thing. Maybe watch the news?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 07/11/2018 16:38

Disgusting. And even more so that it was a female who made the comment.

Unless there is an awful lot more about this than has not been reported I fail to see how he was found not guilty.

Although given certain laws regarding the treatment of women in that country I’m not surprised either.

Not through yet though.... Still awaiting legislation

Actually that would be women in the United Kingdom (northern ireland)

ZackPizzazz · 07/11/2018 16:41

Abortions are not actually available in the ROI yet. A woman who needs one today is still shit out of luck. A woman is being prosecuted in NI right now for procuring abortion pills.

Maybe read more than the headline.

IStandWithPosie · 07/11/2018 16:43

A woman is being prosecuted in NI right now for procuring abortion pills.

That’s under U.K. law!! ROI and NI aren’t the same country you know!

And yes, the law is in progress, it is still happening!

IStandWithPosie · 07/11/2018 16:45

Maybe read more than the headline.

Grin I’ve read more about it than you could know. Being that it directly affects me.

ZackPizzazz · 07/11/2018 16:45

... I'm perfectly aware. I'm from there. But NI is still Ireland, and it's NI's law not the UK. Abortion IS legal in the UK generally, so it's fairly nonsense to say she's being prosecuted because of UK law.

Biddie191 · 07/11/2018 16:46

That poor girl, and for any teens reading that, it must be heartbreaking. No wonder many rapes are never reported. The thought of going through the court case, facing the man who raped you, re-living the details for someone to basically say you were asking for it because of your underwear is just unbelievable. I hope the defence lawyer feels really ashamed of herself.

youarenotkiddingme · 07/11/2018 16:47

Yes it's fucking discusting.

What she did or didn't wear is irrelevant to whether he raped her or not.

The matter of whether he raped her or not is unclear from what's written there (obviously a brief summary!) and the jury found him not guilty of rape.

But that decision should have been based on evidence on sexual contact and consent not whether she wore a thong or her best pair of Bridget Jones.

IStandWithPosie · 07/11/2018 16:48

No, abortion is legal in some parts of the U.K. other parts still haven’t legalised it. NI is part of the U.K. so yes, it’s absolutely fair to say this is U.K. law.

Justcallmelu · 07/11/2018 16:50

Well I got a letter from my lovely police stating that I wasn't sure about consent/non-consent when I had spelled out shouting No. So they are not proceeding to sent it to the CPS. Rape cases are notoriously difficult to prove and notoriously difficult for the victim. I would never proceed with police on another rape case (God forbid). It's almost impossible to prove unless you have a lot of bruises and even then they will turn it that maybe you fell over drunk and injured yourself that way despite hand prints on your arms. I dunno, maybe a guy dragged you out of the gutter. I wouldn't urge anyone who has been through rape to go through trial. It's horrendous.

Vinorosso74 · 07/11/2018 16:51

Bloody hell! What year are we living in? Why do people keep blaming the victim in rape cases due to her underwear, short skirt etc. So only baggy trousers and bloomers are acceptable to stop a man's urge?

pallisers · 07/11/2018 16:52

Someone is from NI and doesn't grasp that it is a part of the United Kingdom! That's some failure of the education system.

The report in the OP is disgusting.

sageandrage · 07/11/2018 17:04

When I was studying law, we got to sit in court on a few cases, one was a rape case. The Barrister actually held up a thong and asked the poor victim if she was wearing it on the night

Irrespectively, the accused had actually broken into her flat whilst she was asleep and had woken up to him raping her not that it matters what she was wearing either way!

I was extremely glad when I heard he'd been found guilty and given a custodial sentence, however it completely changed my mind and I left my law studies as I knew there was no way on earth I could represent scumbags like that.
