You know the song by Hozier - Take me to church?

I just recently showed the video to a friend who didn't realise the meaning of the lyrics until seeing the video, but it just reminded me about the bit where the guy is burying a box/chest.

What's the significance of it? Is it that he has buried his secret or something?

It's bugging me to know!

Only thing I can think of is that it's a metaphor to show that one of the guys buried his secret and denied being gay or something?

Hmmm, I thought it was him burying a box of their photos/ mementos, saving or hiding the beautiful thing from the hatred all around. Bit like the lover in the lyrics with her secret joy in tbe midst of the intolerant church. Dunno tho haven’t watched it in a while so may be misremembering!

Hozier was interviewed about this, @Wazznme

Question: Throughout the video, the characters bury and unearth a chained, locked chest. What does that represent?

Answer: I won’t go into that. I think it’s better that it’s open for whomever to decide what it means.

Maddening! Confused

I thought that the chest contained stuff to help escape the country (Russia) when things got really bad - money, passport, mementos etc.
You see the two young men looking up at a plane flying overhead - and that's what made me think that they were both yearning to leave for freedom.
