So my niece is 5 years old and every year at xmas/her birthday my sil will message me a few weeks before saying what she would like me to buy for her ( she also makes suggestions of what my brother would like again not asked for). I’ve always found it odd but just gone along with it but I had my first baby last year and it’s changed my perspective abit. I have some ideas of things I want to get for her but I am awaiting the txt off sil with her demands (never suggestions, always very precise) would I bu to say I have already got her something ? Is what she is doing a normal thing to do ? I could understand if I asked for advice on what to get her but I never do , does anybody else do this ?

Heads no, can't say I'm reading that from the OP. What I'm reading is, with regard to the niece, SIL has seen her Xmas list or has a good idea of what her DD would like and is divvying that up between relations (hence why it's so specific) to avoid duplication. And that she again knows what her DH would like so is making suggestions there.

No mention of expense in the OP at all.

I wasn't trying to make it about the 'ego of the gift giver'. I enjoy Christmas shopping and choosing gifts for people, I'm sure it's not a crime for the OP to want to choose what she buys

Haven’t RTFT but my niece is asked to do 4 lists: one for mummy & daddy, one for me & DH, one for nana & granddad, one for grandma. Spreads the cost over the whole family, rather than one buying all the expensive stuff and means she gets what she wants with no duplicates.
