I am working abroad in an all male team of Dutch men. They’re nice men but fit the finance stereotype - I am a mid twenties English girl and went out for dinner with two of them today. It was so hard to find anything in common! I’m stuck in a hotel on my own every week for the next few months and really trying to bond with the team - normally it isn’t too difficult for me, I am used to this kind of thing. But I just feel so sad and lonely!! Any words of reassurance much appreciated

Find a hobby class to join and meet some other locals!!!

I talk about work, thr company, have a couple of glasses of wine, find something funny, or what gets everyone riled up and start talking about that. It just takes practice. Persevere. There is always common ground.

Are you in Amsterdam? If so, there's loads of things to do and in any major city. Don't focus on basing your social life around your colleagues instead concentrate on meeting people outside work.

  • Join a walking tour of the city
  • museums
  • galleries
  • gym
  • concerts
  • wine tasting evenings
  • whatever the local version of meet up is

Talk about brexit, that should be good for a laugh.

StrugglingWithThem · 06/11/2018 21:50

Ha might avoid Brexit for now... Wink

Thanks all good suggestions but tbh I’m looking to try and bond with them as we spend so much time together in the same room! Very little time to sight see - what else can I talk about?! They like sport, not hugely into small talk, there’s definitely a sense of humour difference there - pls help
