Started a new job. Repeatedly told they don’t need my P45

AIBU or is this really quite odd? They have copies of my passport and weirdly my bank card. This is a HUGE chain. Not some small independent outfit. Think it’s all a bit odd. Never started a job in my life without passing on my P45.

They are probably lazy and intend to just stick you on BR. YANBU to want to be on the correct tax code.

They may have a system where they automatically send a P46 [request for tax code] to HMRC when they take on someone new.

WrongKindOfFace · 06/11/2018 20:04

Have they asked you to fill out a form instead? Used to be a p46 but it’s called somth8ng else now.

You can just ring HMRC yourself and tell them. I did after they cocked mine up and couldn’t guarantee it would be sorted by the next pay day.

Flipflop789 · 06/11/2018 20:08

They should take it as it gets you on the right tax code quicker, if they dont then in a few weeks hmrc will send them a p6 with your details on anyway but sooner the better so you are paying the correct amount of tax now and your pay isnt messed around

I wouldn't be very happy about this if I was you OP. A few years ago I started a new job and passed my P45 along to them but to my surprise when payday came I was on the wrong tax code and paid emergency tax.

I guess the accountant or whoever does payroll didn't pass my P45 along to HMRC. Work couldn't guarantee it would be sorted in time before the next pay so I rang HMRC myself and they sorted it out, however I still had to go without most of my wages that month which was a huge inconvenience as I had rent and bills to pay.

I would stress to them that they need to pass along your P45 so you are put on the right tax code, after all why should you have to go without all your wages just because their lazy?!

Good luck!

Now that RTI is used (Real Time Information) if an employee doesn't or doesn't yet have a P45, when they are put on payroll the RTI information goes straight to HMRC and they then send back a new tax code to be used asap. Have just done that for an employee who didn't have a P45 as it hadn't yet been issued from old employer due to their salary round dates.
Why not ask HMRC if unsure?
