Loads of great suggestions here but it does depend who you are playing with. I love Terraforming Mars at the moment but it's probably not a kids/beginners game. Best gateway game (imo!) is Ticket to Ride but there are lots of other options.
Games we are playing a lot at the moment (no kids):
Azul
Dragon Castle
Flamme Rouge
Seven Wonders (with aaaaaall of the expansions)
Castles of Burgandy
Code names

seekingclarity · 07/11/2018 06:02

Terraforming Mars looks good and you can play with 5 which is always a + . Now on my list. Only downside seems to be the length of play. My teens will happily sit and play for an hour but 2hours is pushing our luck.

Rainbunny · 07/11/2018 06:17

I have a curious obsession with a board game called "TransAmerica" - it's a strategy game where each player competes to have their railway reach various destinations before everyone else. It's strangely addicting, I think there's a European version as well -"TransEurope." I promise this game is so much more fun than I am making it sound!

I guess "Cards Against Humanity" gets a mention, but that's only because my (now ridiculously wealthy) friends invented the game!

WhatdoImean · 07/11/2018 07:45

A lot depends on what "style" of game you want to play....

Monopoly is an "elimination" style game. You keep playing until only 1 player is left. This is often classed as a "US" style game. While they can be good fun, it can leave people kicked out of the game earlier, and not having much fun as they watch the remaining players carry on playing. Monopoly, Twilight Imperium are these types of games.

Another classic style of game is the "Euro" game (been around for a while, but seen as a style originating in Germany). These games do not eliminate players, and allow all players to play through to the end. Normally, there is still a chance (though it may be pretty faint!!) for all players to have a chance of winning, or at the least, influencing who DOES win, keeping interest alive in the game to the end (Settlers of Catan, Carcassone, Alien Frontiers)

The other major type of game is a "co-op", where the players play together against the game (Pandemic, Pandemic Legacy, Gloomhaven (best. game. ever.), Battlestar Galactica etc. Some of these can be a bit more complex by the nature of the game - to make it a tricky opponent to beat, the rules can sometimes be a bit complex

Overall, I do like the US style games for 2-player fun - my partner and I do well playing against each other.... but no so well playing co-op (we consider the fact that we played the computer game "Portal 2" in co-op mode to the end, and our marriage survived, to be a major success!!). For more than 2 players though, especially for family games, we prefer the Euro style games.

... and yes, I am a board game geek.

Speaking of which:-

most popular board games

Have a look at the above :-)

ThePants999 · 07/11/2018 08:58

The Ameri/Euro distinction is not to do with whether players get eliminated. It's more about the level of abstraction, analysis, randomness - very few Euros feature dice, for example.

Haven't seen it mentioned in here yet: Through the Ages. For those who don't mind a long rulebook, it's bloody awesome. And you can get it as an app now.

purpleworms · 07/11/2018 09:19

@WhatdoImean & @ ThePants999 that's very helpful, thank you

@WhatdoImean good summary there.

I looked up gloomhaven on Amazon and it is coming up as £150+ . Is that right??

WhatdoImean · 07/11/2018 09:55

Yes, the price is right (or wrong, if you want to buy it... Sad )

I was lucky enough to get it as part of a kickstarter, so it was just very expensive rather than insanely expensive. That said - it is like Pandemic Legacy in that there is a story line you uncover as you play, but with a lot LOT more to it.... Even despite the cost (and the involved rules...) I STILL think it is a superb game. As to whether it would be worth the money... depends (as usual) on disposable income, and how much you like board games. As a family, for us, it was worth it (we play a LOT of board games)… for others, it may not be for them.

averythinline · 07/11/2018 10:03

Love letters - we have played lots - and bought for lots of others as well..small genius card game... not so keen on teh batman version although graphics are good

Gubz - another great card game - lots of replay

averythinline · 07/11/2018 10:05

ooh and we really didnt get on with Dobble - too much shouting and upset children.... if you are not good at visual spotting - you will always lose....

Bujinkhal · 07/11/2018 10:23

MahJong is a favourite in our house, takes a while to learn and is only 3 or 4 players but many hours of fun have been had (It's totally different to the PC version, it's like a mix of bridge and gin rummy)

Risk

Hero Quest, if you can still even get that.

BikeRunSki · 07/11/2018 18:12

Sorry!

TanyaTonyaMargaret · 10/11/2018 07:10

I don’t like Ticket to Ride, it goes on forever!

We love:
Dobble
Blokus

And DH loves Risk, I really hate it!

icouldbewrongicouldberight · 10/11/2018 08:28

A friend of mine brought Booby Trap round and my seven year old loved it so I have bought an old one from eBay. We also love Labyrinth.

Magissa · 10/11/2018 09:06

I really like Dixit. It's a story telling game. Best when played with at least three people but more even better.

Njcr · 10/11/2018 09:31

OP - is there a board game cafe near you? Lots of cities have them now. Games are so subjective - e.g. lots of people love Pandemic but I hate co-ops.
If you can get to a board game cafe they will have most of the games mentioned here and usually someone who will be able to teach you how to play them. We haven't been to one for a while but would play 4 or 5 games in a day and have bought quite a lot based on things we have tried their.
Or wait until next October and make the trip to Essen...I think I managed 28 new game plays in 2 days there 😂

seekingclarity · 10/11/2018 09:38

@fussychica I've never heard of Sequence. Looks like it could be good. Do you think a 6 yr old could play it?

TheChickenOfTruth · 10/11/2018 09:54

Catan all day.
Dixit is great.
I hate playing Monopoly because no one ever follows the actual rules!

FinallyFree123456789 · 10/11/2018 10:19

Frustration
Payday
Scrabble
Go for broke

  • we play these as a family with grandparents & kids
GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 10/11/2018 14:23

@seekingclarity , if you're worried about the length of Terraforming Mars, you should look into the latest expansion for it, Prelude. It helps you get your game engine up and running faster so you're able to afford to do more things near the begining of the game, which means it doesn't take as long to play. I would also say 3-4 players is the ideal number for the fastest game.

ChairinSage · 10/11/2018 20:34

I've broken my Terraforming Mars duck this afternoon. It's brilliant! I'll not a board game fan, and I struggled with the mechanics of it to start with, but really liked it once I'd got the hang of it.

Teenage DCs all joined in and didn't moan at all. Definitely recommended for older children.
