AIBU?
To like the name Maryvonne?
rupertina · 06/11/2018 08:27
I read it in a Brookner novel and rather like it?
Do you think it's a nice name?
rupertina · 06/11/2018 08:31
I suppose I could use Mary Yvonne which would give a choice of either name.
IceRebel · 06/11/2018 08:35
It reminds me of Twilight where the main characters call their daughter Renesmee , after their mums Renée and Esme.
It's a mash up of 2 names, and doesn't work.

A much more sensible suggestion, your child will be very grateful.

The way it sounds when I say it "Marravon" is nice but it looks pretty awful written down a problem with many names for example Olivia looks lovely written down but sounds not so nice spoken.
LakieLady · 06/11/2018 08:44
I'm afraid it immediately gave me a mental image of a Trump-supporting redneck from Hicksville, West Virginia.
DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 06/11/2018 08:47
Olgivanna would be better, and would identify you as the right sort of person.
RoyalChocolat · 06/11/2018 08:51
It is a French name. Maryvonne would be in her 70s now, from a working-class background.
Maryvonne and Yvonne are not due a comeback anytime soon. Please don't.
drumandthebass · 06/11/2018 08:54
Awful name. It's sounds too double barrelled - which I dislike immensely
MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 06/11/2018 08:56
yes..how are you going to say it?
Mar-yvonne....sounds vaguely acceptable, like a obscure Cornish inlet
Mary-von ..sounds like some terrible 4WD people carrier, with sliding doors.
Loonoon · 06/11/2018 08:57
As someone whose middle name (after my much loved granny) is Mary, I would scream no to either version of this name. It just seems so old fashioned to me. But perhaps it’s due a comeback.
NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 06/11/2018 08:58
Honestly... call her Mary Ivonne, it will sound the same but it will save your daughter years of misery explaining that yes, her name is badly wiritten and no, her parents were not ignorant people with no spelling skills...

From Urban Dictionary
Maryvonne
The german slang term for "German squirrel"
wow! did you see that cute little maryvonne run up that tree??
Dumbledoresgirl · 06/11/2018 09:03
I knew one once. Pronounced marry-von. She was lovely but I had no idea her name was anything other than made up.

Rubbish, Maryvonne is not a German word, that entry is completely made up.
fluffertothegentry · 06/11/2018 09:07
It sounds like the name of an android in a SF novel. Don't do it, IMA.
PlatypusPie · 06/11/2018 09:08
I have never heard it before - have a bit of a Brookner aversion - but rather like it. The pronunciation and derivation would have to be explained all the time, though, which could get irritating over a lifetime. Also could get misheard for Marylebone :/
pasturesgreen · 06/11/2018 09:09
I think it's a bit rubbish, quite honestly, but then it's not my child.
