I read it in a Brookner novel and rather like it?

Do you think it's a nice name?

I don't like it at all. Neither do I like the name Yvonne. It's one of those French names that became hugely popular in the UK and Ireland during the 60s and 70s - others being Michelle, Lorraine and Jacqueline. Lovely in France where they have a heritage and are pronounced properly, but just sound dated and a bit cheap out of their natural environment.

But Mary is nice.

If you like unique names then use Mary. I bet she'll be the only one in her school and no worries about telling people how to spell it.

It sounds very fifties American. The sort of name you would imagine a waitress in a diner to be called in a film.

Evonne or Yvonne is a nice name. I would leave the Mary out of it.

Jaywick is an area on the outskirts of Clacton, on the Essex coast. It was (possibly still is) the most deprived area in England. Recently, a Republican politician used images of Jaywick to show what would happen if the Democrats got control of Congress.

My brother lives in Jaywick. It was the cheapest place in England he could buy a property outright with the funds he had available.

Jaywick is the seaside village in Essex that the Republicans used in their "do you want America to look like this" campaign.

Don't like Mary Yvonne much either, the Y's together make it very clunky to say.

So because you'd get deleted for being a twat if you said "council estate in Jaywick" you make fun of poor people in other countries

Oh stop being such a drama llama, nobody is 'getting deleted' it's a stereotype and it's a stereotype for a reason. Any where is Jaywick? I've never heard of it. I hope you're not implying that it's an undesirable place to live, you'll get deleted Shock

Sorry I don't like it - sounds made up and there'll be major spelling issues....

I like Mary. Not made on Yvonne but the 2 separately would be better.

What about Marianne?
Or Mary Anne?
Or Mary Eve?

Rubbish, Maryvonne is not a German word, that entry is completely made up.

You're not familiar with Urban Dictionary are you? Grin

I like it. It's glamorous.

Jean Rhys's daughter was called Maryvonne.

(What is it with all the old-school French names now though? Sidonie on another thread...)

I'm afraid it immediately gave me a mental image of a Trump-supporting redneck from Hicksville, West Virginia.

So glad we don't have ridiculous names in this country. Hmm Or people who voted to listen to Farage and his bus.

Maryvonne would be in her 70s now, from a working-class background

I thought she'd be in a trailer park in Alabama.

I have never heard it before - have a bit of a Brookner aversion - but rather like it. The pronunciation and derivation would have to be explained all the time, though, which could get irritating over a lifetime. Also could get misheard for Marylebone :/

It sounds like the name of an android in a SF novel. Don't do it, IMA.

From Urban Dictionary

Maryvonne
The german slang term for "German squirrel"

Rubbish, Maryvonne is not a German word, that entry is completely made up.
