To not give my neighbour my WiFi password?

SneakyGremlins · 05/11/2018 11:36

Neighbour has since he's lived in his flat been using BT WiFi (free) FOn? - with a username and password left by previous tenants. This has now stopped working, and he's been moaning about it - and is now starting to badger me about me giving him the password to mine - not offering to pay towards it or anything.

AIBU to say no? It's not the fastest as it is, and someone else streaming films/downloading films (which he says is "all he wants it for" will slow it down even more.

I wouldn’t, as you can’t control what he’s accessing.

If he’s desperate to be online, he can pay like other people.

gamerchick · 05/11/2018 11:38

Yep that will slow you down.

Tell him to pay for his own internet, tight fit.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 05/11/2018 11:38

Absolutely not.

Racecardriver · 05/11/2018 11:39

Of course not. If he does anything dodgy it will be traced back to you.

dizzydaisies · 05/11/2018 11:39

If he asked you to pay his water or electric bill would you say yes?
You know YANBU. Keep firm, you pay the bill so keep telling him to stop trying to freeload.

CocoDeMoll · 05/11/2018 11:40

Huh, why would you? Of course YANBU.

InappropriateGavels · 05/11/2018 11:41

Not being unreasonable at all - he lives in his own home which is separate to yours, he has his own utilities, he is entirely capable of getting his own internet connection. Tell him to do just that.

Give him this number: 0121-do one.

safariboot · 05/11/2018 11:41

YANBU.

Unless you have some IT expertise, you could be risking your own compuy security. If he's an idiot and gets his PC infected it could infect yours too, and if he downloads stuff illegally and gets caught the complaints and legal threats will come to you.

SneakyGremlins · 05/11/2018 11:42

That's the thing, I let friends use my WiFi but that's when they're physically here and I can see what they're doing!

I'd mind less if he offered me half the bill but he seems to just expect it Confused

Escolar · 05/11/2018 11:42

Of course YANBU!

Hannnnnnnxo · 05/11/2018 11:43

He is aware that WiFi/broadband is something that he has to pay for right? It’s like he thinks he’s entitled to WiFi!

Absolutely say no - it’s not your problem. If his landlord promised him when he let the flat that WiFi will be provided, it’s something he needs to chase up with his landlord.

You have no idea what he may be accessing- and it will all be under your IP/account....

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 05/11/2018 11:44

Of course not YANBU. There have been tens of these threads already. Why is it such a quandary Confused

SneakyGremlins · 05/11/2018 11:44

Glad I'm not being unreasonable!

'just' streaming tv/film Confused

Of course YANBU.

reallybadidea · 05/11/2018 11:44

I would laugh in his face.

WeeMadArthur · 05/11/2018 11:44

Hell no! What a cheeky fucker! I wouldn’t even do it if he offered to pay half, god only knows what he might be accessing. Although come to think of it you could charge him for access but lock it down with parental controls!

TheStoic · 05/11/2018 11:45

Is this a serious question?

Yes, YWBU to not give your neighbour free wifi.

GlasgowWorrier · 05/11/2018 11:45

Wifi isn't like air. It's not something that just flows magically out of the skirting boards.

Hannnnnnnxo · 05/11/2018 11:45

He could be doing anything from pirating films, buying drugs online, accessing illegal content - your broadband provider will give you the warnings. It doesn’t sound like you’re particularly close to him either, so you shouldn’t consider this anyway

Lana1234 · 05/11/2018 11:45

Just say no to him. I had a whole drama with an old neighbour when I “lent” him the password cos he was “waiting to get his set up” (not true unfortunately) its just not worth it

MonoClue · 05/11/2018 11:46

The BT for isn't free. It's around £18 for 5 blocks of 24 hours. Chances are he's used the previous owner's account and it's either run out of credit or they've changed their password. (Misses point of thread).
Definitely do not give out your password; you've no control over what they're using it for and any illegal activity would trace back to you.

starfishmummy · 05/11/2018 11:47

Do not do this. At all. Ever. Just don't.

Cheby · 05/11/2018 11:47

Jesus wept, no YANBU.

And change the name of your network to ‘Get your own WiFi you cheeky fucker’, like Sheldon in Big Bang Theory. 😂

SputnikBear · 05/11/2018 11:48

Just tell him it’s against the Ts & Cs of your ISP contract. He could download illegal content and it would be traced to your address. Or he could hack any other computer on your network and get all your bank details etc. Or even just print random stuff on your printer. Definitely not a good idea.
