To not give my neighbour my WiFi password?

Neighbour has since he's lived in his flat been using BT WiFi (free) FOn? - with a username and password left by previous tenants. This has now stopped working, and he's been moaning about it - and is now starting to badger me about me giving him the password to mine - not offering to pay towards it or anything.

AIBU to say no? It's not the fastest as it is, and someone else streaming films/downloading films (which he says is "all he wants it for" will slow it down even more.

Not in a billion years.

BT Wifi Fon isn't free btw, it's £40 a month, because we have to use it where we are the moment. His predecessor has just changed the password or cancelled their PAID account because of the massive data use on it, I imagine.

Mulberry72 · 05/11/2018 11:49

YADNBU! Don’t give it him, he’s a CF!

Tell him to pay for his own WIFI!

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/11/2018 11:49

If he asked if he could tap into your electricity to power his cannabis farm, you'd say no. The same answer applies to your other utilities including broadband.

Streaming and downloading films takes up huge amounts of data, so you'd need a high speed unlimited package for this to not fuck up your connection and cost you a fortune anyway.

Ruddle91 · 05/11/2018 11:50

I mean I let my Nan who lives next door log in on her phone for Facebook (all she needs net for) but a stranger .... no!

RTFT · 05/11/2018 11:52

Please please please don't give him access, even if he offers to pay

TeaForDad · 05/11/2018 11:53

"But I just want to use it to download and upload data oh MY GOD why are you being so unreasonable"
Say you don't have the internet and change the network name to "buy your own Wi-Fi tightarse"

Nithead · 05/11/2018 11:56

How have you reacted when he's asked?

UpstartCrow · 05/11/2018 11:58

I cant believe you'd let him share your wifi if he offered to pay Confused
Say no, and if he persists complain to your landlord.

AdaColeman · 05/11/2018 12:01

Why on earth would you fund a neighbour's internet usage? Would you pay for his transport to work or his grocery bill? Of course not! Hmm

BT FON isn't free.

DarlingNikita · 05/11/2018 12:01

Er, no, obviously YANBU. Tell him he's having a laugh.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 05/11/2018 12:03

God no, he could be downloading anything.

Tell him to buy his own! CF.

JessieMcJessie · 05/11/2018 12:03

Why do you even have to ask?

strawberrisc · 05/11/2018 12:05

CF!

OhhEnnEmm · 05/11/2018 12:05

I wouldn't do it, even if he offered to pay, anything he does on your IP will be linked to you.

trulybadlydeeply · 05/11/2018 12:06

Just no!

Presumably he pays his own water, gas, electricity etc? Then he needs to pay for his own WiFi if he requires it.

Don't even accept a contribution towards using yours, he could be doing absolutely anything with it, and you could potentially be implicated.

Next time he mentions it tell him not to ask again, and that you're very puzzled as to why he can't have his own WiFi.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/11/2018 12:06

I see it has already been said but BT FON is not free, so he has effectively already spent a lot of someone elses money on his 'free' wifi.

Tell him to piss off and pay for his own, as every other adult does!

And whatever you do don't fall for his charm / hard luck story / emotional blackmail.

I'd even go as far as to change the name of your network to something that reminds him the answer is "No!" and update the password, just in case!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/11/2018 12:07

Tell him to pay for his own internet, tight fit
Tight fit? Oh, gamerchick, the urge to sing The Lion Sleeps Tonight is just
a whim away........ahem.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 05/11/2018 12:08

YANBU

Tell him to get his own WiFi or go to a supermarket, coffee shop, hotel or library if he doesn’t want to pay.

Spam88 · 05/11/2018 12:09

Definitely NBU. Obviously. You could always say you don't have unlimited so an extra person streaming would take you over your allowance if you don't feel comfortable just telling him to get to fuck.

JuliaJaynes9 · 05/11/2018 12:10

OP the fact that you even need to ask if you're being unreasonable makes me feel concerned for you strengthen your boundaries!
Just say no.
do not give a reason
do not explain
do not justify yourself just say no.
if you really can't stop yourself giving a reason then just say only I use my WiFi or that doesn't work for me
don't get drawn in

Xiaoxiong · 05/11/2018 12:12

I had a neighbor, a total CF, who asked me this once. I just looked at him and said "I don't have Wi-fi." He was like, what, come on, of course you do! And I just said nope, don't have it. It causes negative morgellons and cancer and to be honest it will kill you.

He walked away saying "you're completely crazy!"

Missingstreetlife · 05/11/2018 12:12

Cf. absolutely no way. A password is to stop ppl accessing your account. Let him have it on his mobile he can link that up himself.

Alfie190 · 05/11/2018 12:12

Imagine going round to the new neighbour and asking them to pay your council tax or whatever.

JuliaJaynes9 · 05/11/2018 12:16

If my neighbour asked me this I would just laugh at them🤣🤣

DishingOutDone · 05/11/2018 12:17

Imagine going round to the new neighbour and asking them to pay your council tax or whatever. ... but if someone did that, someone would come on here asking if they were unreasonable to say no. You know it.

OP I literally cannot believe you have to ask and I think actually YABU to say it wouldn't be so bad if he'd offered to pay. Well yes, it would still be bad, it would be beyond ridiculous.
