To want a stairgate for my baby?!

We have a dado rail at the top of our stairs and I can't find a stair gate that will fit with it, mixed with a 7 month old who is crawling. It means the stairgate needs to be both narrow and tall (needs to fit 68.5cm width and 84cm height). I've scoured the net and can find a narrow OR tall baby gate but not both.

We live in a typical 1930's style house. Other people must have this problem and I'm starting to get really worried I won't be able to find anything. Surely somewhere must sell it?!

Posting here for traffic, but if anyone knows of a baby stairgate that would fit that gap I'd be really grateful if you could please let me know!

We had gates at the bottom and on individual rooms upstairs. Much safer!!

My SIL has the same problem and got a local carpenter to make a custom wood gate which looks good. She really didn’t pay that much more.

@Santaisgettingbusy I have the same, I cant carry a child (eldest is 5 & disabled) whilst undoing the baby gate at the same time, too much of a risk of falling down the stairs

Can't help with your exact problem (our house doesn't lend itself to stargates for other reasons) but in the meantime it might be worth teaching them to go down stairs backwards. When dc got to crawling stage we repeatedly showed them to stop, turn and go down feet first on their front. Now at toddling stage and they still either go backwards or stop and squawk at us until we come and help them down.

It is tiresome though - have to be switched on as to where they are all the time or have closed doors/barriers elsewhere in the house so they can't make it to the stairs.

I’ve found one that’ll fit the width and is 80cm tall:

www.amazon.co.uk/Callowesse-Safety-Carusi-Narrow-63-70cm/dp/B07587LD96/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?keywords=extra+narrow+stair+gate&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1541414183&sr=8-5

I appreciate it’s not quite the height, couldn’t find one that’s 84cm high

I have older dc and the thought of an accident when one hasn't shut a gate swayed my decision. We have 2 sets of stairs and 3 floors so was a logistical nightmare anyway!! Cable tied gates shut and dc hopped over!

Thanks so much for your suggestions and sympathy! I'm going to have a look in to some of your suggestions now. Thanks again x
