To shower while baby sleeps in bedroom

We've had our first baby and my DH is back to work today after paternity leave. This may seem like a stupid question but we seem to disagree about whether I can take a shower while the baby sleeps in the bedroom without my having a baby monitor to take into the bathroom. I think I should be ok if the baby's upstairs, I'm in and out asap - potentially leaving the bedroom and bathroom doors open. He reckons I need to take a baby monitor into the bathroom (which we haven't yet purchased).

Please be gentle, Mumsnet, we are first time parents Smile

Baby will be fine. Having a shower every day was one of my non-negotiables with a newborn. I either left her sleeping in her crib in our room and left the bathroom door open - could hear her fine and a bit of crying does them no harm. If she was awake I’d put her in her bouncy chair in the bathroom and then dance/sing in the shower which she quite liked. Once she could sit up ok she came in the shower cubicle or bath with me.

You get a shower, they get entertained!

I used to put mine in the Moses basket wherever I was. I think I used to shower when dh was around though, just in case I fell or slipped.

At the time, I would have taken a 2 week baby into the bathroom with me on a mat or in a carry cot/basket. They like the sound of water anyway.

If I had another one, I probably would be fine leaving it to sleep in another room.

You will knacker the monitor and strain to hear it the whole time, potentially leaping out of the shower if you hear something, having to run through the house starkers and dripping wet.

Do what feels right to you.

If the baby does wake up and cries, the few minutes whilst you finish your shower is not going to cause your baby any harm. Have a shower.
What did parents do before modern technology!

I once put my PFB on the landing outside the bathroom whilst I showered with the door open...She fell asleep and then I struggled to step over her post C-section!
