I know some people can't help it, I get that.

BUT I've just seen a photo on FB of a Mum & daughter and someone has comment 'so pressures' - I am assuming they mean precious!!

Any other classics you've seen?

Naice is a MN thing - someone found a shopping list which had 'naice ham' on it. I presume it's meant to mean posh ham - i.e. not processed, reformed from offcuts.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 04/11/2018 08:52

Someone beat me to it but I must mention councillor instead of counsellor.

‘I’m seeing my councillor for therapy’ ... I think that’s highly unlikely!
‘I’m having councilling’ - no, think it more likely you are having counselling
It’s spelt this way more often than not on MN. Drives me a little bit nutty

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 04/11/2018 09:11

I had to google perquelier because I had no idea what it could be. I'm assuming it's peculiar?

HildaZelda · 04/11/2018 17:46

@wowfudge, 'naice' always makes me think of Mrs Brown, "That's naice" Grin

wowfudge · 04/11/2018 17:49

I've never seen it Hilda.

HildaZelda · 04/11/2018 18:01

@wowfudge, you're not missing much!

Whiskeyjar · 04/11/2018 18:01

Chester drawers instead of chest of drawers

TeachesOfPeaches · 04/11/2018 18:03

Email from colleague explaining a matter was 'working progress' instead of work in progress.

TeachesOfPeaches · 04/11/2018 18:08

I see swop so much that I had to double check whether I knew the correct spelling.

lazyarse123 · 04/11/2018 18:09

On fb today there was a post about some characters leaving NCIS and someone wrote "it's not been the same since Tony and Zebra left" wth (Ziva for those that don't watch it).
Of instead of have is my biggest hate.

SunshineP · 04/11/2018 18:12

Alot. Bloody alot drives me mad.

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:12

Spelling mistakes that makes you cringe OP? Maybe you should correct your own thread title!

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:17

The most prolific ones:
-Your instead of you're
-Should of/would of/could of instead of should have/ would have/could have.
-Their/there/they're all mixed up
-Apostrophes when it's a plural i.e Tomatoe's 29p
-Definately instead of definitely

shallen · 04/11/2018 18:18

There is someone who is very active on our local Facebook page; I'd say every post has some ridiculous spelling which makes me twitch!
This week, when referring about a burglary, said there had been 2 breakings rather than break ins (which I also don't think is correct).

Also constant use of the word Hun........ argh!!

Knittink · 04/11/2018 18:18

I find misspellings as infuriating (or occasionally hilarious) as the next person, but I don't think you can necessarily attribute it to poor education or not being 'told the rules'. As a language teacher, I'd say that loads of people (quite apart from those who have dyslexia) just have a poor memory for spelling, even when they have been taught. So some of them decide to assiduously check everything, while most just accept that they get things wrong, but don't let it worry them too much!

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:19

Break-in?

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:20

I don't think some people understand that the whole meaning of what they are trying to say is affected by their misspelling.

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:23

I am part of a WhatsApp group where one member constantly makes th type of errors I mentioned and I have to read her texts several times to get her meaning. I don't mind so much misspellings of words where the meaning isn't altered by the error.

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:24

the Grin

ragmayo · 04/11/2018 18:27

Collage for college

Knittink · 04/11/2018 18:28

I don't think some people understand that the whole meaning of what they are trying to say is affected by their misspelling.

I don't think that happens very often tbh (though obviously one can find examples where it would happen - like the famous "Good grammar is the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit" Grin.

People on MN are always claiming to be baffled by poor spelling, lack of paragraphs etc. It's usually just an excuse to put someone down. This thread has many examples of common misspellings, all of which are perfectly recognisable as what they are meant to be. Admittedly, 'perquelier' had me puzzled, but only for a second!

Cambalamb · 04/11/2018 18:30

But the meaning can be so different as you've demonstrated.

Historydweeb · 04/11/2018 18:33
