To think getting it out might not be as easy as they thought?

Out with friends last night, one talking about another friend who has really bad thrush and after over the counter stuff has no effect started googling alternative remedies.

One of these was to shove a peeled garlic clove up there. I know garlic has antibacterial properties so it might not be the most outlandish suggestion (though...the smell???) but in the end the woman had decided not to give it ago because she was worried it might get lost in there and she'd reek for months until it decomposed.

Cue discussion and mixed opinion about this possibility. Must people's views were 'a tampon doesn't get lost so why would this?' But I disagree. AIBU? My arguments are-

Firstly, a garlic clove is tiny and slippery. Secondly, I once had a coil fitted and they cut the strings too short. It took two expert doctors, an internal camera and various other instruments 15 minutes to get it out, so while I appreciate that yes, there is finite space for it to get 'lost' she was absolutely right to question the retrieval.

Intrigued by the whole idea but no, I wouldn't take the risk

Maybe a doctor would be better.

They used to use leeches in the old days and bathe in sea water. There are better ways than garlic.

steff13 · 01/11/2018 07:55

I wouldn't put garlic up there myself, but I don't think it could get lost.

tiredgirly · 01/11/2018 07:55

Why doesn't she go to the pharmacist or GP

Why doesn't she go to the pharmacist or GP

Also, this^^. She must be miserable.

ifoundthebread · 01/11/2018 07:58

Does she intend to push the garlic clove up through her cervix like you would a coil? I'd imagine if she just slot it in a bit she would retrieve it no problem.

On the Thrush point, does your friend have the Coil? I had reoccurring Thrush due to the copper Coil, I suffered mild copper intoxication and that was one of the side effects

Well a coil is in the uterus. A garlic clove would be in the vagina. Not remotely comparable.

Weird thread.

LittleBookofCalm · 01/11/2018 08:02

no way

Cuttingthegrass · 01/11/2018 08:02

I guess if she can’t get it out A&E have seen worse things Grin]

LittleBookofCalm · 01/11/2018 08:03

have tried yogurt in the past

WeeDangerousSpike · 01/11/2018 08:03

Maybe she could thread a string through it like a conker.

Silvercatowner · 01/11/2018 08:03

Errrm.... this is a REALLY bad idea....

Sassielassie · 01/11/2018 08:04

Is she planning to thread a string though the bulb pre-insertion so she can yank on it for easy retrieval?

CrookedMe · 01/11/2018 08:07

There was a thread on here years ago by a woman who had shoved a clove of garlic up her arse. It may still be in Classics!

steff13 · 01/11/2018 08:11

I don't think the poster was suggesting this, I think she was just making the point that an IUD is inserted up through the cervix, whereas the garlic would just be in the vagina. Which is basically a cul de sac, so the garlic wouldn't get lost.

SeasonOfTheCrone · 01/11/2018 08:12

It won't get lost, there's a cervix to prevent that. It just will take a while to get hold of it to remove it. The garlic will still be in the vagina, there's nowhere else it can go.

Tahani · 01/11/2018 08:14

There's a dodgy face book site I have seen, where they suggest putting a knotted string through the garlic... hth!
(Still dont thinks it's a good idea)

schooltripwoes · 01/11/2018 08:16

It's a bad idea as garlic can really burn. But if she decides to give it a go anyway, it won't get lost if she just inserts it low in her vagina, she (hopefully) won't be trying to get it past the cervix into the womb . Pop it in before bed and it won't defy gravity and go up.

TheBigFatMermaid · 01/11/2018 08:20

I only ever buy 'Lazy Garlic;, wonder if standing on my head and having it spooned in would be effective. Grin

piscis · 01/11/2018 08:22

I had it a few months in a row. Medication was not helping much and was slow. I looked for natural remedies and tried a few drops of tea tree oil diluted in olive oil, rubbed. I could feel an amazing improvement in just the first day. You need to apply it a few days even if you already feel well. A friend of mine had been suffering thrush very often, for years, she was so fed up. She tried this and never had it again, she was thanking me for ages! Do not put too much tee tree oil to start with as it is too strong, I'll say 10mls of olive oil and 5-7 drops of tee tree oil. I wouldn't do the garlic thing...

MrsStrowman · 01/11/2018 08:23

Terrible idea. I had persistent thrush years back when I changed pills, all the nuclear strength treatments in the world wouldn't cure it for more than a few days. In the end the dr put me on a very very low dose daily for a month. Worked a charm. She needs to go to her gp

Beamur · 01/11/2018 08:26

Has she been treated for systemic thrush? A friend of mine got thrush a lot (very stressed and run down too) and was finally diagnosed with chronic systemic thrush (was everywhere, in her throat, etc) and a skin fungus (which was invisible).
As well as thrush, the other fungus needed treating and for a while she also had to add some kind of anti fungal to her washing machine, as the spores would be in her clothing and bedding. She's much better now, but still adds tea tree oil to her washing machine. As a natural anti fungal agent.

Silvercatowner · 01/11/2018 08:27

I don't think the poster was suggesting this

Yes I do realise that, ( Confused ) but there are odd people on here who see stuff written down and don't think things through.
