To think getting it out might not be as easy as they thought?

Out with friends last night, one talking about another friend who has really bad thrush and after over the counter stuff has no effect started googling alternative remedies.

One of these was to shove a peeled garlic clove up there. I know garlic has antibacterial properties so it might not be the most outlandish suggestion (though...the smell???) but in the end the woman had decided not to give it ago because she was worried it might get lost in there and she'd reek for months until it decomposed.

Cue discussion and mixed opinion about this possibility. Must people's views were 'a tampon doesn't get lost so why would this?' But I disagree. AIBU? My arguments are-

Firstly, a garlic clove is tiny and slippery. Secondly, I once had a coil fitted and they cut the strings too short. It took two expert doctors, an internal camera and various other instruments 15 minutes to get it out, so while I appreciate that yes, there is finite space for it to get 'lost' she was absolutely right to question the retrieval.

Intrigued by the whole idea but no, I wouldn't take the risk

People have ended up in hospital by putting doing this with garlic.

Blimey. Will pass that on!

At least she'll never get a zombie up her fanny

Yes, maybe Halloween was the one day to give it a go

I would suggest she goes to the gp to make sure it’s definitelh thrush. I thought I had it but when I got into so much pain it was burning to wee I went to the gp and I actually have lichen schlerosis which has similar symptoms but needs a steroid cream to treat it. It’s worth checking although I think it’s more common in older ladies (I was only 20 when diagnosed so unlucky!)

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/11/2018 09:25

Go to the doctor if you think you have persistent thrush. I know someone whose doctor didn't even check for a while and it turned out she had vulval cancer, rather than thrush, and she's actually passed away now from that. Only 60 and a dear person.

Your friend will need to go to Holland & Barrett’s to get some acidophilus (sp?) she will also need to cut down on sugar.

I don’t think shoving garlic up her vag is going to help 👃🏻

TheDodgyDunnyOfDoom · 01/11/2018 09:28

Garlic might be antibacterial but for throush you need an antifungal. Thrush is a yeast.

If your friend is washing herself with antibacterial soap that is why she has thrush. It's killed the friendly bacteria as well as any imagined bad bacteria causing the overgrowth of yeast in the first place.

TheDodgyDunnyOfDoom · 01/11/2018 09:29

Thrush not throush. No idea what throush is ! Grin

Sent link to mutual friend so she can collate advice for her be-thrushed chum

Some really useful practical tips that I will def keep in case needed for future use. I will never, ever put a garlic clove anywhere other than a pan or a salad dressing

If getting it out was the issue (rather than effectiveness) surely you’d just use one of those frozen cubes of pre-crushed stuff.

Blobby10 · 01/11/2018 09:43

I had what I thought was persistent thrush a few years ago - turns out I was being a bit too enthusiastic with my personal hygiene and the extra soaping and rinsing with the hand held shower head (NOT douching - always a couple of inches away Blush) was irritating the sensitive skin down there!

Since then I've been much more gentle with myself and never had a problem. Could your friend be trying too hard to be clean?

mydietstartsmonday · 01/11/2018 09:52

Does she drink diet coke - I got infection after infection not sure if it was thrush or vagi thingy. But I gave up diet coke and my vaginal health has improved. I had antibiotics, tried all sort of remedies over the counter and daft suggests as above. Used PH balanced wash everything

Gave up diet coke & no re-occurring problems.

HairyStorm · 01/11/2018 10:00

Have tried this once. Threaded a string through the garlic to aid retrieval, which worked fine.

Didn't cure the thrush though.

And I could taste garlic in my throat the whole time it was there, which was unexpectedly weird.

Would not recommend.

ToastyFingers · 01/11/2018 10:00

I know all bodies are different but I struggle to understand how someone can lose/not reach a tampon that's inside them. Perhaps I have an incredibly shallow vagina but I can reach pretty much everything in there if I should be so inclined. A tampon takes up pretty much all the space in there, especially a super sized one.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/11/2018 10:06

No idea on the garlic but once had a boss who swore that a frozen sausage was a great way of providing relief.

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 01/11/2018 10:33

sweeny

hmm]

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 12:24

Frozen sausage!!! I can sort of see why (shape works, cold brings relief)...but no

Have seen horrendous skin burns on the feet from someone using crushed garlic to deal with athletes foot. She had to attend a specialist burns unit and almost lost her toe. DO NOT use crushed garlic for skin issues. Rubbing a clove on the skin is OK but does not work
