To think getting it out might not be as easy as they thought?

Out with friends last night, one talking about another friend who has really bad thrush and after over the counter stuff has no effect started googling alternative remedies.

One of these was to shove a peeled garlic clove up there. I know garlic has antibacterial properties so it might not be the most outlandish suggestion (though...the smell???) but in the end the woman had decided not to give it ago because she was worried it might get lost in there and she'd reek for months until it decomposed.

Cue discussion and mixed opinion about this possibility. Must people's views were 'a tampon doesn't get lost so why would this?' But I disagree. AIBU? My arguments are-

Firstly, a garlic clove is tiny and slippery. Secondly, I once had a coil fitted and they cut the strings too short. It took two expert doctors, an internal camera and various other instruments 15 minutes to get it out, so while I appreciate that yes, there is finite space for it to get 'lost' she was absolutely right to question the retrieval.

Intrigued by the whole idea but no, I wouldn't take the risk

Maybe you need to thread a string through the end to make sure that you can retrieve it (otherwise you might just end up pushing it further in). Surely that would sting though?

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 08:36

Catching up

Good point about the coil!

She had tried stuff from the pharmacy already

Yes, I suggested threading it like a conker

Leeches

It's a friend of a friend. I don't know her but I understand the thrush was a nasty one off and she'd tried all the obvious hence the googling

If nothing else the would you or wouldn't you try garlic provoked a lively discussion over dinner

I do know someone who had to go to a clinic because a condom got lost up there.

And by someone I really don't mean me!

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 08:39

Sorry phone not letting me do one big reply

And I agree it couldn't get lost but I do think it could be very tricky to retrieve

OP posts:
EBearhug · 01/11/2018 08:43

I've had a tampon get lost, in that I couldn't reach the string and had to see the GP for him to remove it.

Not that this is of any help to OP's friend.

siakcaci · 01/11/2018 08:45

I'm amazed that any woman need the anatomical difference between the uterus and the vagina pointed out to them.....

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 08:51

I don't think they do...the point with the coil is that the threads were very short so although in the vagina couldn't be retrieved

What's this doing in Relationships??

springydaff · 01/11/2018 08:57

oops

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 01/11/2018 09:02

Minor point (I'm a scientist).

Thrush is a fungal infection.
Garlic has anti-fungal properties and it's these properties which may help with thrush, NOT antibacterial ones as stated in the OP.

A (very) quick skim around the internet suggests placebo studies have shown that shoving garlic cloves up your minge is not going to help.

Figural · 01/11/2018 09:03

You know when you chop garlic with your bare hands you have to scrub the smell off with a nail brush and soap or some other chemical? It's why we use garlic presses, pestles and mortars, etc etc, so hands don't come into contact with the stuff? Need I say more?

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 01/11/2018 09:05

What happened to natural yoghourt as a cure for thrush?

It works. (Apply it - don't eat it)

SchadenfreudeUndeadified · 01/11/2018 09:07

What's this doing in Relationships??

Agree springdff

You aren't going to have many with garlic up your fanny.

Someone mentioned that tampons don't get stuck up there - actually they can do, and can cause toxic shock syndrome which can be fatal. They don't put a string on them for decoration.

CherryPavlova · 01/11/2018 09:07

This isn’t real is it? There aren’t adult women this daft, surely.

WhoWants2Know · 01/11/2018 09:09

Tampons DO get lost up there sometimes! Haven't you come across those threads on here where a poor nurse or gp has to go spelunking in search of either a missing tampon or an unspecified vaginal irritation?

What comes out is usually enough to clear the waiting room.

FlibbertyGiblets · 01/11/2018 09:10

Conker style threading me snigger but yeah don't do it.

NannyMcfanny · 01/11/2018 09:12

Garlic can burn the mucus membrane if in contact for a prolonged period.

If she has a moon cup (or similar) she could put probiotic (plain) yogurt in and leave it overnight.

Cutting sugar from her diet and increasing garlic intake will help.

People have ended up in hospital by putting doing this with garlic.

Santaisgettingbusy · 01/11/2018 09:14

Has she accepted she will never receive oral sex again?

xmascrazee · 01/11/2018 09:15

At least she'll never get a zombie up her fanny Grin

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 09:15

*I've had a tampon get lost, in that I couldn't reach the string and had to see the GP for him to remove it.

No but it illustrates the point that what goes up isn't always that easy to get down again!

This doesn't shock me!! None of us had ever heard of the idea of it until yesterday. I can see why. My suggestion was indeed natural yogurt

OP posts:
Tahani · 01/11/2018 09:18

on a serious note, i eat LOADS of pro biotic yogurts when i have an inkling of thrush, and it works for me (not saying it would work for everyone)

missstyfied · 01/11/2018 09:19

Yes with you on the probiotic yogurt

I do like garlic very much, but prefer in in a sauce

And to the pp who talked about garlic crushers and the smell...yes this was one of the first things I asked. Actually...no doesn't bear thinking about. Fanjo fumes

OP posts:
SheeshazAZ09 · 01/11/2018 09:19

Things can indeed get sufficiently 'lost' in there to cause a problemfor see example all those ppl who forget they have tampons in and after a while they get difficult to get out, start creating infections etc. With natural remedies there is never any need to use 'whole' itemsyou can liquidise and dilute the garlic bulb or as others suggest use tea tree oil or even garlic oil--care should be taken to dilute all these substances so that they are not too strong. However, ppl should see these apparently localised problems as a systemic problem and address their gut microbiome with a sugar-free whole food organic diet, prebiotics, probiotics, etc.
