I started a new job 3 weeks ago. And today is payday. But ive not been paid. All my direct debits are due to come out tomorrow and ive not got enough money in to cover them should i of expected today to be paid if i started work 3 weeks ago? My manager is on holiday with her family. So feel awful messaging her but cant go without money.

Ive still not been paid and just found out manager is in charge of wages. Im still torn whether to contact her whilst she's on holiday. Would you? Or would you wait a couple of days til she's back?

If there is no one else who can help in work and you need the money I would yeah.

SyrilSneer · 31/10/2018 11:46

I’m NHS and wouldn’t get paid this month if I’d started on 11th as our payroll cut off is 5th. New staff are made aware of this when arranging a start date though.

OliviaStabler · 31/10/2018 12:08

Can you not ask a colleague first if they have been paid today?

Tahani · 31/10/2018 12:10

Send her a message

LittleBookofCalm · 31/10/2018 13:14

Can you ring bank to see if its pending

Alfie190 · 31/10/2018 13:20

No I wouldn't contact the person on holiday, but I would raise it with somebody else. HR?

Nesssie · 31/10/2018 14:37

All those suggesting HR- she works in a small private nursery, they won't have a HR department.

EmmaStone · 31/10/2018 14:41

I deal with payroll and would want to be contacted if this happened, even if it meant I was just passing the query onto someone else - agree with a PP that paying staff correctly is the most important thing when employing people.

Merryoldgoat · 31/10/2018 14:53

You should contact her. I deal with payroll. If I’m away on payday the first thing I do, wherever I am, is check the funds have left the bank and my emails to see if there are any major issues. If there were I’d deal with it remotely. That is my job and staff not being paid on time is unacceptable.

I do the wages at my company and its all manual. If pay day is on one of my work days I process it when I get to work so it wouldn't be in the bank until mid morning. If it's on one of my days off (I'm part time) I set it up the day before and I think it goes in by 9 on pay day. Could be the case with yours if it's manual

This is a very strange way of doing payroll and not recommended for a host of reasons. It’s easy to timetable payroll across the year and make sure you give yourself and employees notice of when pay can be expected.

I’d find this unacceptable from both employer and employee sides.

siakcaci · 31/10/2018 14:58

I hope you have managed to resolve things

Potato2242 · 31/10/2018 14:59

It's been 3 weeks so not long enough to be added onto payroll. You'll get paid double next month but not this one sorry to say

QforCucumber · 31/10/2018 15:03

this is silly, I'm a payroll manager, we can add people right up until 2 days before pay is due for most clients, private sector doesn't usually cut off until quite close to payday

AGHHHH · 31/10/2018 15:05

Not necessarily!

myfatarse · 31/10/2018 15:05

ifthey're going to make you wait you can ask for an advance of wages and they will then take this off you wage in november

Merryoldgoat · 31/10/2018 15:08

@qforcucumber

Thanks for dispelling this nonsense.

I do payroll too and have often had to add people last minute, even the day before payday.

I accept it might take more time in a big company but I do this for a payroll of 100 - a small payroll of 4 would present no issues at all.

MsLexic · 31/10/2018 15:17

Well, what were you told when you started? If that does not occur, contact her.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 31/10/2018 15:19

I get paid on the 26th but it doesn't go in until 2pm for some reason. Could that have happened?

QforCucumber · 31/10/2018 15:23

@Merryoldgoat difference procedures I find bizzare, we could have had a new starter on a site the other end of the country on the 1st October, due to get paid the 31st, and 90% of the time i wouldn't have the details handed to me until the 29th. Noth the employees fault but they need adding.

In a small private day nursery i can't imagine why you'd not have been paid, if you've not had a contract etc have you definitely provided the correct bank details over? I would call, you're reliant on the money and as far as you're aware you should be paid for hours worked up until a certain date (which I'd expect to be last friday or similar)

skyesayshi · 31/10/2018 15:25

I do payroll for lots of small businesses and they all vary how they pay people. Some set it up in advance which means it would go in first thing, some pay on the day, which means it goes in whenever they do it. Pay day is the last day of the month, it doesn't stipulate a time. If you work for a big business you can expect it to be there first thing, but not always with a smaller business.

I can add people at any point in time, and would imagine that most small businesses can seeing as they make manual payments. I can see that a large firm employing hundreds or thousands of people would have to have it all set up in advance and there would be no time to change it.

It should have been explained to you if there was going to be a delay, so I would contact your manager, just be apologetic. Hopefully she can sort it out for you.

Merryoldgoat · 31/10/2018 15:28

@qforcucumber

I’m frequently in the HR office asking about new starter forms about 3 hours before payroll has to get sent 😂

hellhavenofury · 31/10/2018 15:34

I would definitely message by now - If you leave it too late there may not be chance to rectify it or give you a one off payment as you haven't had you contract yet laying out the procedures. I am sure if she is professional enough and cares she will get straight back to you. I would if any of my employees message me on holiday RE payroll.

bluddyknackered · 31/10/2018 15:48

Yes, definitely message her if you haven't been paid yet. My DP owns a small company and if he'd forgotten to pay someone, he'd want to know, even on holiday, and would sort it out no problem.

NatureIs · 31/10/2018 15:49

I've also done payroll (BACS) and could have added people right up to sending the file which was usually a few days before pay day. I understand there are other ways to pay people but if you're paid by monthly BACS I can't see why anyone should have to wait an extra month unless you started 2 or 3 days before pay day.
On the rare occasion someone wasn't reported as a starter before the file had been sent we'd do an advance (via CHAPS) and deduct it next month.
This info is about 10 years ood but it could have only gotten easier surely?! Confused
