I started a new job 3 weeks ago. And today is payday. But ive not been paid. All my direct debits are due to come out tomorrow and ive not got enough money in to cover them should i of expected today to be paid if i started work 3 weeks ago? My manager is on holiday with her family. So feel awful messaging her but cant go without money.

And what happens when you're sick and don't run it?

londonrach · 31/10/2018 07:01

Go in to work and talk to them but very unusual to be paid so quick but im nhs and we work a month first before being paid. Did you leave another job as they should be paying you if no break a month after you left. Talk to payrole as thry might be able to give you an sos amount x

OliviaStabler · 31/10/2018 07:04

Do not message your manager in the first instance. Talk to one of your colleagues who can tell you when pay normally arrives and who you should contact if there is an issue. If that is your manager then so be it but I would try and find out through another route first.

mrs2468 · 31/10/2018 07:04

@topcat2014 that's just wrong. It's not an emergency yet though is it. Surely you contact you work first check all avenues then contact your manager as a last resort. The world and work should not stop when someone goes on holiday and would expect others to be able to deal in their absence. As a finance director I would expect someone in your area if you do payroll to be able to sort without the manager being there. They are on a probably much needed rest.

@siobhan8686 why are you taking a colleague word on when you get paid. This should be in your contract what does that say?

topcat2014 · 31/10/2018 07:05

Our payroll is done (by me :)) on 22nd of the month for payment on 28th, so if you started after 22nd there wouldn't be any pay, but I would not expect someone who started three weeks before pay day to get nothing. (but we have loads of staff so it is complex - the thought of leaving it to the last day would bring me out in hives)

A month in hand surely does not exist! That would mean work in October not being paid to the end of November.

If they have made a mistake they should offer a same day payment of a round sum amount and get it all sorted next month.

bobbinogs · 31/10/2018 07:10

A month in hand definitely exists. Large education employer here and hourly paid staff will have no wage over summer break then return to work in September and not be paid till today! Awful conditions and they do absolutely vital work.

giantbanger · 31/10/2018 07:14

It depends on when you started in work - where I used to work you had to start before the 10th of the month to get paid that month, otherwise you had to wait to the following month.

Ring them and ask if it isn't in by 9am.

Yonijust · 31/10/2018 07:17

It could be the end of November?

Lwmommy · 31/10/2018 07:19

Agree that depending when you started you may not be due today. Cut off where i work is 11th of the month, anyone who starts after that wouldnt get paid till the following month.

ElainaElephant · 31/10/2018 07:19

Of course a month in hand exists, and yes it can be tough to adjust in the guest instance, but people love it when they leave!

For an employer with a lot of staff and fairly high turnover (due to the nature of the job, it attracts young people /students) and one payroll employee, it's all needed.

Speaking from experience.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 31/10/2018 07:20

I work in payroll, cut off for us to be paid that month is the 9th. Depending on your company you may not be due a payment until November.

Ringonrighthand · 31/10/2018 07:26

There's only 7 people in the company including the director, her partner and her son. Everyone knows their wages go in on the same day (or a Friday if pay day is on a weekend) so there really isn't any stress or frustration. Its in on pay day morning so what's the issue?

Jaxtellerswife · 31/10/2018 07:27

This happened to me at a nursery. I asked the deputy who snippily replied that I had until midnight.
The next day I asked the manager and she's simply forgotten all about meHmmin a staff of four people.
I'd ask

jarhead123 · 31/10/2018 07:31

Never known anywhere where wages don't go in at 2am when the bank refreshes. I'd message manager/ring head office if its a chain. You need paying.

LakieLady · 31/10/2018 07:33

Hope your money's in OP, but I'd also change the date of those direct debits. The day after payday doesn't leave an adequate margin if things go wrong imo.

siobhan8686 · 31/10/2018 07:34

I started work on the 8th of October. I haven't had a contract yet

Prior to this job i was on jsa. And had my last payment almost 4 weeks ago.

Depends on how the organisation works. In my first job with a corporation after leaving my career job and where I was paid via payroll (as opposed to contract work paid via Accounts) I started on the day after payroll cut off. So around 7th or so. So missed payday mid-month. I was paid the following month and received that months pay and back pay of 3 weeks from the previous month as well.

THEsonofaBITCH · 31/10/2018 07:40

At ours paying is on last week day of the month, ie today, and money needs to be in everyone's accounts by close of the day (23:59) so it could show any time up to midnight today depending on the business.

KnobJockey · 31/10/2018 07:41

I do the payroll for a small company here, I also do it manually, so it would be in before 3pm. Why do we leave it till that day? We employ a handful of builders and tradesmen who are paid weekly, they often put in their invoice at lunchtime on s Friday for hours up to Thursday night. As we are small, I have the flexibility to pay them that that day, so why wouldn't I? Also, I have to wait for the boss to come in (we have a two tier system, due to previous theft by the office assistant) and she schedules the the time for it on a Friday. Its hard enough to pin her down more than that!

siobhan8686 · 31/10/2018 07:54

Thanks everyone. My previous jobs have always paid me at midnight but Ive always worked for big well known companies. Never private employment. Im still crossing my fingers that it's just how the company work. As long as i get paid today ill be happy. Id be stuck if i have to wait til the end of November.

at my place sometimes the money doesn’t go in until about 2pm. sometimes it hits at midnight. literally no idea why and it’s a pain as all my main bills come out on payday and sometimes my accounts look horrifically scary until my wages go in. i am in the same position i am now on maternity leave and checked my account this morning and no money. freaking out a bit that they have messed something up but will leave it until after lunch and then call. maybe give it until this afternoon and then check.

mrs2468 · 31/10/2018 07:59

If you don’t have contract though technically no contract of employment exists. Please get a contract as soon as the manager returns. I’m surprised however they have been able to employ you in a nursery and done the back ground checks etc but no contract exists. How do you know your rate of pay, holidays etc. Get on this right away it’s ridiculous they have expected you to work without one.

lizzzyyliveson · 31/10/2018 08:12

technically no contract of employment exists

That is not the law. Please don't give out incorrect advice.

mrs2468 · 31/10/2018 08:35

Yes probably worded that wrong
