to not wear makeup to work?

I am starting a graduate job in January. I don't normally wear makeup. Am I sabotaging myself if I do not wear makeup?

Or should I wear makeup?

It is a corporate job.

"Every female looks better in makeup"

Perhaps those who don't wear it should just put a bag over our head so as not to offend!Hmm

TristanDaCunha · 01/11/2018 16:54

Every female looks better in makeup

What a daft thing to say Grin

Xenia · 01/11/2018 16:59

I don't agree they look better with make up. That's the thing - we can all just follow how we feel as there are few jobs these days where you have to wear it. So just do what you feel is righ and we can each keep quiet about what we think the other half looks like who do or don't wear it.

OneStepSideways · 01/11/2018 17:10

Plenty of men these days use concealer, brow gel, neatly manicure their facial hair etc.

It's about looking groomed and polished. Various studies concluded that physically attractiveness helps you succeed in interviews, as humans unconsciously associate beauty with positive character traits.

I wear light make up to interviews and at work as I associate not wearing it with pj days. I use a light CC cream, powder, eyeshadow (blended well so it's barely visible) and brow gel, with a bit of bronzer or contouring cream, tinted lipsalve. Make up makes skin look clearer, eyes bigger, brings features into focus and makes me look more awake!

I definitely don't look better in make up. Even if I have other people do my make up, people who have lots of experience with it, I end up looking old(er) and more tired then I actually am. That's not even to mention the break-outs I usually get afterwards. Plus, make up is so messy to remove. It's a real pain in the ass the take off your face afterwards.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/11/2018 17:16

The only weird judgy people are the ones who think that women need to wear make-up to be considered professional, but don't expect men to do the same.

Should men wear make-up too, so they also look 'more polished and professional'? Confused

Of course you don't need to.

I will admit I speak as someone who works alone at home in baggy-kneed yoga trousers and a holey cardi, and emerges only periodically into daylight blinking, muttering and looking like a bus-stop nutter.

But my point stands.

dwab45 · 01/11/2018 17:28

Do exactly with what you comfortable

dorisdog · 01/11/2018 17:33

Noone should be obliged to wear make up.
I used to wear a bit of make up. During the last year I've stopped wearing any at all. My eyes felt a bit naked for a bit, but now I feel free! It's amazing. Not that I have anything against make up - my daughter's make up looks stunning. But I've realised I feel released from an obligation and I love it! Rubbing my eyes, cycling, saving time... (I'm objectively moderately attractive, so not one of those stunning people with razor cheekbones and thick eyelashes).

Parker231 · 01/11/2018 17:34

Wear it or not wear it - totally up to you. I do sometimes and other times not. Wearing makeup certainly doesn’t make you look more professional. It isn’t a sign of being well groomed. It would be a very poor employer that judged by makeup. Clean clothes, shoes and nails count for me not mascara and blusher.

Xenia · 01/11/2018 17:37

Should men be wearing it then to make their eyes look bigger and who wants big eyes anyway? Having eyes that look bigger than they are makes no difference to how a female surgeon cuts open the bodies or how i as a lawyer advise on a complex contract. However if women or men want to wear make up to make their eyes look bigger at work let them.

speakout · 01/11/2018 17:48

It is your choice.

I like to wear make up. It can brighten, disguise, make me look sparkly when I don't feel it, make me look healthier than I am.

I can hide dark shadows, cover blemishes, add a rosy glow to enhance the way I look.

MsLexic · 01/11/2018 17:53

Simple make up can improve your confidence. Lots of BB cream with a sun factor, some mascara and a bit of lip gloss. Light foundation is a wonderful thing, as is concealer. I don't feel comfortable without at least lip salve, lips get sore I find.I look after my skin mainly, I use carrot seed oil and rosehip and some Poppy Austin stuff ( which is amazing)
I cleanse my face with Liz Earle washes or the cheap one from Superdrug.I think everyone including men should look after their skin.
My favourite cheap brand of make up is Oriflame which is both ethical and fab. ( On ebay). I also use Stila eyeshadows.
But it really is not necessary if you do not want to.

SilentIsla · 01/11/2018 17:58

...who wants big eyes anyway?

🤣🤣

exaltedwombat · 01/11/2018 17:59

Ladies - you really have to get rid of this idea that 'confidence' is a special female issue, and that painting a face on helps you attain it. It's sabotaging the whole equality thing.

speakout · 01/11/2018 18:01

ladies

Confused
PyongyangKipperbang · 01/11/2018 18:02

I would because, as much as we wish it wasnt true, people do judge women by how they look. Once you reach a certain level then its less important but when you are entry level, how you look is as important as how you perform.

I really really wish this wasnt a fact and I say that as a make up wearer by choice.

Rainbow151 · 01/11/2018 18:06

I barely brush my hair and never wear make up day to day and I wouldn’t say it’s ever held me back. I’m in a senior manager position and sit on the board. I’m there to do a job, not to look pretty! However, if you want to wear it then wear it - do it for you and not other people though.

NotUsedBySomeoneElse · 01/11/2018 18:06

To be honest, who cares if you look better in make up? You don’t go to work to look good. I’m not usually comfortable in makeup so rarely wear any at all for work, other than occasional concealer or tinted moisturiser if my skin isn’t great. That’s my choice though and it isn’t expected that I do. I’m a professional in a non-corporate job.

As long as you’re clean and tidy, do what you’re comfortable with.

TristanDaCunha · 01/11/2018 18:07

Various studies concluded that physically attractiveness helps you succeed in interviews

Physically attractiveness (sic) doesn't necessarily mean a made up face.

campervancharlie · 01/11/2018 18:09

Did you wear make up for the interview? Do you think it plays any part in their decision to hire you?

RomanyRoots · 01/11/2018 18:10

I'll wear make up to look polished when men have to.
I'm surprised how many women on here succumb to misogynist views, and then act like feminists, it's a joke and no wonder corporate women aren't taken seriously.

Lovebeingmama · 01/11/2018 18:11

If women want to wear make up or heels for work it’s their choice but I detest the idea that women should wear makeup and a heel to look professional. Confidence should come from within.
I find that a lot of women in senior management don’t wear much make up or heels, because they are confident in their own abilities and don’t need to wobble in heels or spend their time putting on makeup to appear ‘professional’

CauliflowerBalti · 01/11/2018 18:12

This thread, man... make up doesn’t make you look more or less professional. You got the job with the face you’ve got.

Wear it if you want to. Don’t feel like you have to. I wouldn’t, if I were you.
