Next day delivery

Does next day delivery mean that it actually will be delivered the next day?

I ordered a naice gift for DH for his birthday on Friday yesterday from Debenhams. I paid the little extra for next day delivery.

'Next day delivery' is up until 6pm. I called at 7 as it hadn't turned up. Turns out it's with Royal Mail still in Preston (we're down south)

I'm a bit peeved but it's not the end of the world, as long as it's here by Friday I guess! Just slightly annoyed that I paid for next day delivery and stayed in all day (I'm on mat leave) for an item that's nowhere to be seen.

Nothing I can do, is there? I guess I'm sitting in tomorrow too and hoping for the best...

Did you order it before the cut off?

CandyCreeper · 30/10/2018 19:59

doesnt always sshow up next day

Cherries101 · 30/10/2018 19:59

Next day / same day is only guaranteed if you live with 100 miles of Amazon’s big warehouse near London. The actual delivery time for other places will only be given to you once you’ve confirmed your purchase.

Nanasueathome · 30/10/2018 20:02

The OP ordered from Debenhams, not Amazon

bingowingoe · 30/10/2018 20:03

Ordered it at about 3pm yesterday and it said in the confirmation email that it'll be delivered between 8-6 today.

I'm definitely within 100 miles.

What a pain! I just don't see the point in paying extra for next day when it's a no show being stingy

Also Cherries, Amazon have “big warehouses” all over the place. I live about 5 miles from one & am nowhere at all near London.

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 30/10/2018 20:06

Next day means next day if you order before the cut off. And royal mail guarantee it or you get a refund. So contact Debenhams and get a refund on your postage.

CandyCreeper · 30/10/2018 20:12

I ordered from Jd next day delivery before the cut off it never came next day, like i said doesnt always

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 30/10/2018 20:13

@CandyCreeper

It doesn't always show up because things go wrong, but if you pay extra for a service and don't receive that service then you are entitled to a refund.

Royal mail will guarantee the delivery; if they miss it then they refund, so Debenhams get their money back.

Eliza9917 · 30/10/2018 20:25

I had a row with a company once about this and they said it's next day from when the order is accepted.

Did they send a notification just saying 'we've received your order and it will be processed' or whatever it is it says?

Did they take the money immediately?

LittleRen · 30/10/2018 20:26

Sometimes things just go wrong - most of the time they don’t. I am a serial online shopper and I am rarely let down on next day... you will be able to get your money back.

SoyDora · 30/10/2018 20:27

I paid extra for next day delivery from jojo maman Bebe last week... it arrived 9 days later. By which point I’d ordered and received the item from elsewhere, as there was a reason I’d paid for next day delivery in the first place!

Namechangemum100 · 30/10/2018 20:30

Most companies have a cut off time for placing orders. If you placed your order before this time then yes it should be with you the next day UNLESS it specifically refers to "working" days, and therefore it would most likely arrive Monday.

Muddlingalongalone · 30/10/2018 20:36

If you pay extra it should be next working day if you order pre cut off. Complain & they'll refund your delivery charge

bingowingoe · 30/10/2018 20:41

Yup - took money and I got the confirmation email almost instantly all at about 3pm yesterday.

I know it's only the matter of a few £ but it's just the principle and wasted money. I'd have been buggered if DH's birthday was tomorrow.

I was under the impression that the fault lies with Royal Mail and was told by Debenhams that I'd simply have to call RM tomorrow and chase them up...

Royal mail has a contract with the sender, not with you. They need to refund you. They can hen recoup their loss from royal mail.

You can chase up the parcel for delivery, but you can't get a refund from royal mail as you didn't pay them directly.

You paid them. They didn't give the service paid for. They need to refund. They can get their money back. I completely agree with it being the principal. It's just a few pounds, but if they do this to lots of customers then it's extra money in their pocket (if the choose to reclaim from royal mail whilst refusing to refund you).

bingowingoe · 30/10/2018 20:50

I absolutely hate asking for refunds etc but I guess I'll have to bite the bullet!

I wonder how long it'd not have to turn up for before I'd get a refund on the actual item

Legally, they have 30 days. Unless a deadline is agreed... in this instance you can argue that a deadline was agreed when you chose "next day". So, in this case, you can get the refund now. But that's almost impossible to force as they will tell you to wait for it to arrive and then return it.

And since you've ordered it online, you can get a refund if you tell them within 14 days of the day you receive it that you want a refund. You then have another 14 days to actually send it to them and get your money back.
