Loose manhole cover, reported back in July. Not been fixed. Making a loud DONK-DONK noise approximately every 30 seconds. Am chasing it with the Council and the water board, but in the meantime I'm going insane. Suggestions?

If your worried about it caving in, it won’t.

If you are annoyed by the noise I don’t think there is much you can do. I am sure someone will just remove the cone

If your worried about it caving in, it won’t.

A woman was killed when her car hit a broken manhole near me.

Personally I wouldn't be so cavalier with safety ...

let's you report it, and will send the report to the local authority, and keep you updated about it's progress.

Beyond that, you can contact your local MP - especially if you feel people aren't doing their jobs. If you do, I'd use www.writetothem.com/ as it helps people know how well (or otherwise) their elected representatives are doing.

Tell your council that it is loose and you saw someone nearly fall down the hole. They'll be round pronto.

I like the penis suggestion! Grin

Update is they said they've fixed it, but they haven't. Had a naice phone call from customer services bloke at the water company who said they'll look at it again in the next 10 working days. Aaaargh

My local MP is unfortunately a knob so I wouldn't want to ask for his help with anything Angry

Send them an email with the word "dangerous" in it. That usually works pronto.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 01/11/2018 11:55

I'd definitely be tempted by the cone idea, if you've 10 more days of this. So annoying!

Would a cone stop drivers getting passed, or just make them swerve a little either side?

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 01/11/2018 11:55

*past, not passed. Urgh!

QuestionableMouse · 01/11/2018 11:57

If you put a cone in the road and someone crashes because of it, you could be liable. Get your neighbors to phone and complain too.

TenForward82 · 01/11/2018 16:36

I wasn't serious about the cone. Due to the location it would be very dangerous, liable to cause someone to swerve and crash into my front wall (again)

Someone did the pothole penis thing around here - 3 foot high in the middle of the road. After 2 months the council came to "fix" it... so instead of a 3 foot high spraypainted cock and balls, we now have a 3 foot high outline of it where they've really done a shit job of covering it up so it's still a dead obvious cock and balls.

CantWaitToRetire · 01/11/2018 17:34

I had one outside my house that disrupted my sleep every night because I'm on a main road. When I reported it, it was ignored, but that's probably because I said it was a noise nuisance and they didn't care. So a couple of weeks later I informed them it had got worse and it looked like the manhole may collapse. They were out the next day to fix it. Probably worried someone would sue them.

TenForward82 · 01/11/2018 18:07

Cantwait, I did the whole noise complaint thing, then emailed the water company to say it was leaking after it hadn't been fixed for 3 months.

Can you hammer a wedge into the gap to stop it sobbing and making the noise? Or use some cloth?

GeorgeTheHippo · 01/11/2018 18:09

Sobbing? wtf - that's you presumably.

Wobbling!

Pissedoffdotcom · 01/11/2018 18:11

Can you get the actual cover off & ring them all panicky that someone has nicked it?

SandAndSea · 01/11/2018 18:23

Speak to one of your local Councillors?

fairgame84 · 01/11/2018 18:42

I stood on a lose manhole cover once and fell down it. I have a dent and scar on my leg.
My cousin is postie and fell down a manhole on his rounds, he got thousands in compensation.

Water company rang me today and I missed it!
