Have name changed but frequent poster.

It was my birthday on Sunday & last week (Tuesday) I saw my best friend very briefly and she gave me my present to open on the day. I opened it on Sunday and she had bought me a nice box of chocolates – lovely, I like chocolates. Anyway I text her to say a generic thank you she text back have a lovely day – all’s well and I good. But I’ve just spoken to her and she didn’t get me chocolates. She bought me a very ‘naice’ candle.

How weird is that. She has absolute no reason to lie – we’ve know each other forever and don’t have ‘expectations’ in the sense that sometimes we spend a lot, sometimes we don’t. I asked if it could have got mixed up with someone else’s present and no, she had no other birthdays going on. The strangest part is the gift bag and wrapping paper were exactly what she had wrapped the candle in – but it was chocolates.

What the hell has happened to the candle? We had a laugh about it but honestly, it’s so weird!!

Oooooh you are good @Gitfeatures

NicoAndTheNiners · 30/10/2018 19:38

I’ve also got a Neom ad on FB, but for room scents not candles.

Didn’t click on any Neom links or google them but guess I did type Neom so maybe that did it?

SmileEachDay · 30/10/2018 19:44

I didn’t even type The Candle Name and I have them...

Outfoxed · 30/10/2018 19:58

I believe those style boxes are always limited edition holiday type boxes? So you should be atleast able to find out if they’ve been bought recently

ElfID · 30/10/2018 20:15

Have you seen the receipt?

I think she's fucking with you.

Bluntness100 · 30/10/2018 20:15

No one switched her gift for an expensive box of chocs, that's daft, 🤣🤣🤣

The only way the friend was confused as to what she gave her, was if she didn't buy it and wrap it, so has to be a regift..,

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 30/10/2018 20:55

Did she come on public transport? Could somebody beside her have had an identical bag, with chocolates wrapped in identical paper? And they accidentally did a bag swap?

But you have the card from her Hmm

SymphonyofShadows · 30/10/2018 21:04

Have you checked the safe in the attic?

sittingonacornflake · 30/10/2018 21:11

This is driving me potty. What if we never know?!

VisitorsEntrance · 30/10/2018 21:17

Well this is silly.
But then I’m 43 and clearly loosing it.

EggysMom · 30/10/2018 21:27

So did the OP rescue the paper from the bin, and does it look as though it's been used twice (double sellotape marks etc)?

HandlebarTash81 · 30/10/2018 21:28

There’s no way she was regifting and assumed it was a candle. The shape is so obviously a box of chocolates.

And it’s really difficult to wrap chocolates badly. Someone definitely knew it was a pricey gift - took a punt based on your BFs classy appearance and nabbed it.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2018 21:37

If she had regifted and made a mistake , when op said thanks for the chocs, she would have just said “oh glad you liked them “ surely ? Also as pp says, a flat box of chocs is hard to mistake for a candle.

Ariela · 30/10/2018 22:09

Then OP's DH must've done the switch and gifted the candle to his mother, simply because he cannot stand the whiff of posh scenty candles.....

OHolyNightOwl · 30/10/2018 22:16

I would like to think it is a Fantastic Beasts type bag swap and you now have a Niffler in the house.

Loyaultemelie · 30/10/2018 22:29

It has to be op DH but why? 🤔 does he really like candles and nicked it? Does he really hate candles and disposed of it? Also wtf did he happen to have Hotel Chocolat handy?? Argh

C0untDucku1a · 30/10/2018 22:41

£45 for a candle! That’s literally burning money.

What’s your dp like normally? My money is on him.

However, has the dog behaved any differently? Is the dog laughing at you behind your back? You said you dont think the dog could wrap, but you also said the wrapping quality wasnt great, so...?

QuimReaper · 30/10/2018 22:43

THERE IS NO WAY FRIEND MISTOOK A BOX OF CHOCOLATES FOR A CANDLE! No candle in history is one inch high and six inches square!

0lgaDaPolga · 30/10/2018 23:02

I think dh has something to do with it. The fact that he remembers you comment on the poor wrapping and you don’t seems suspicious, why would that have stood out to him if it was a passing comment you don’t even remember making?

ferntwist · 30/10/2018 23:02

Any updates OP?

lms2017 · 30/10/2018 23:07

Sure someone isnt playing trick or treat on you ......?

HandlebarTash81 · 30/10/2018 23:09

If DH had something to do with it, why would he draw attention to the wrapping? All the does is highlight the idea that someone has swapped the gift - which is presumably what he’s supposedly done?

Junippers · 30/10/2018 23:16

Wow what a good mystery.

I don’t think it’s been regifted: OP said the candle had specifically been chosen to match her newly decorated room colour scheme.

It’s almost impossible to wrap a box of chocolates and think you’re wrapping a candle.

They sound like they have the sort of friendship where she could’ve just said “sorry I can’t afford the type of present I normally get” if that was the case, which is sounds like it isn’t.

I really hope you / we find out soon what happened!!

KittensAndCake · 30/10/2018 23:19

If she had regifted and made a mistake , when op said thanks for the chocs, she would have just said “oh glad you liked them “ surely ?
Yes, you're right, she would.

Does he really hate candles and disposed of it?
Dh wouldn't go to the bother of wrapping the chocolates if he didn't like the candle. He'd just make it disappear once the present was opened.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2018 23:28

I have run this past DH. He said that Sherlock Homes would say that you eliminate all the impossible options, and whatever is left, however improbable, is the answer.
