This is one of the most apt political cartoon I’ve seen.

Also, I am exhausted by the constant refrain about "white women" in these elections. Number one, it's white MEN who vote for the lawless racist misogynist party in the greatest number, but somehow everyone assumes that's just natural and they get a pass.

I'm sorry if that was my posting of a tweet Grinitch. I wasn't giving white men a pass but I suppose I've come to expect it of those who have not 'evolved'. OTOH, I expect more from women - whatever their ethnicity. It's a point very well made, though Smile

I guess that Mother's fingers are (almost) sore from all that pin-pricking. 😃

Gumpendorf · 07/11/2018 15:24

It depresses me that the far right is just being normalized.

Me too, KickAss. It's one reason why some of us are here. A fascination with US politics but also because, so long as the far right agenda is working in a country like the US, it will give succour to others across the world.

It's very apparent in the UK where Brexit was a trial for Trump and where many Brexiteers admire Trump for his no nonsense, non consensus approach. They yearn for the low regulation, low tax, minimal public services approach they see in the US and can't wait to turn the NHS over to US health companies.

I fear we have a way to go before the tide turns.

GrinitchSpinach · 07/11/2018 15:25

No worries, Gumpendorf! Not so much your post but the refrain on the teevee and other forums, just as after 2016. Sigh.

The New York State Senate flip is really really good news! NYers have been held hostage by turncoat "Democrats" for years. (Literally elected as Democrats then decided to caucus with the Republicans to maintain GOP hold on the Senate). Excellent progress to get rid of them.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/11/2018 15:26

"I sometimes fantasize about progressives moving en masse to Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas...The reason this doesn't actually happen is there are few jobs there compared to urban centers. Cost of living is low, though!"

Grinitch they're saying the reason behind the Dem victories in Nevada is because of the record number of California retirees who have 'crossed the border' due to the lower housing costs. The reason IMO this won't happen in WY MT S&ND is because of their damned winters. WY & MT are two beautiful states with two of my favourite places (Yellowstone and Glacier) but would I live there? Hell no! (The Dakotas are beautiful too in their own way but too damned FLAT)

plaidlife · 07/11/2018 15:32

I took my first road trip last half term and drove through Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It was great to see more of the country, realize just how pro trump some bits of the country are and see firsthand some of the issues of rural US. Living in a very anti Trump city it is very easy to fall into a bubble.
The stats for Illinois showed race, age and education all impacted on your vote but income didn't. No wonder public education isn't a priority for this group of republicans.

KickAss

The average age of a Telegraph reader is 61 years old, apparently similar to the Daily Mail.

Reading DT's spew of latest tweets, he really is deluded isn't he?

He says this...

@realDonaldTrump
If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level. Two can play that game!

and someone replies this..
Replying to @realDonaldTrump
Here, Mr. Trump, let me help you make your tweet more presidential. “Congratulations to all those who won last night. We look forward to working with the new house majority in order to bring our nation together on key issues.”

He is a vile odious man isn't he... I hope he is running scared. He may talk of it being a huge win for him but he's facing a rocky road for the next two years. Shame this all doesn't change as of today. Apparently nothing happens until January 2019? What damage can he do before then?

woman11017 · 07/11/2018 15:33

@MSmithsonPB
Senate popular vote:
Democrats: 40,558,262 (55.4%)
Republicans: 31,490,026 votes (43.0%)

Republican +3 seats

QuietContraryMary · 07/11/2018 15:51

The Senate popular vote is meaningless because it's in 1/3rds. The House popular vote is more reliable as it's all-up. The totals are 51.1% D to 47.2% R.

Note that 39 House races lacked Republican candidates, and 3 House races lacked Democratic candidates.

woman11017 · 07/11/2018 16:04

Yup thank Quiet just got schooled by a teen who's studying this too. Blush

BolleauxtoBankers · 07/11/2018 16:08

I’m so sorry, QuietContraryMary, but your last two posts have read to me as if you were talking in tongues, and I'm afraid I am too stupid to understand what you are saying. I'm astounded that the @DNC won't pounce on these GOP intentional minority voter suppression efforts. It should be all over headlines today with @TomPerez holding a press conference. This is how we set the foundation for free, fair AND verifyable elections.

As I've long screamed into the void, voter suppression and election integrity should have been the key Dem issue since 2016. Everything else depends on it or at least is heavily influenced by it.

Gumpendorf · 07/11/2018 16:13

What damage can he do before then?

I was wondering the same Rousette. There was a little mentioned result on NBC's exit poll last night which said that 42% of Americans approved of Mueller and 45% disapproved. There was a big partisan divide - only 20% of Repugs approved and 60% of Dems. The period between now and Jan would be a good time for Trump to close the enquiry down and take the consequences which he has learned will not be great.

twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1060194964351660033

According to NBC News, Voters Nationwide Disapprove of the so-called Mueller Investigation (46%) more than they Approve (41%). You mean they are finally beginning to understand what a disgusting Witch Hunt, led by 17 Angry Democrats, is all about!

BolleauxtoBankers

" I come at it from the European point of view, as described in this Washington Post article reprinted in the San Francisco Chronicle"

Ok.
" As of 7 a.m. EST on Wednesday, more than 44 million Americans had voted for Democratic Senate candidates, versus about 33 million for Republican contenders. As the animated TV graphics clearly showed, the Republicans had still gained two seats and defended their narrow Senate lead - and not the Democrats."

Because the comparison was with 2012. Not 2016. 2012. When Obama won his second term.

And the Democrats did worse yesterday than they did in 2012.

Hence winning fewer seats than in 2012, but still winning the vast majority of the seats available on the night (23 of 34).

If you compare to the UK system then:

  • E.g., in 2010 Cameron won by 7.1% but didn't get a majority, while in 2005 Blair won by just 2.8% and got a very comfortable of 66.
  • The US House of Representatives, which they mention in that article IS gerrymandered to an extent, but the Democrats will win 5.2% more of the House seats on a vote lead of 4%.
  • The Senate is not at all gerrymandered because it's literally Article 1 of the Constitution that there are 2 Senators per state. It does happen currently that the Democrats are not doing a very good job winning Senate seats, but that's not true at all historically. The Democrats held the Senate for 44 out of 48 years from 1932 to 1980, and since 1980 have had control for 18 out of 38 years.
  • The Presidency isn't gerrymandered and again since 1932 the US has had mostly Democrat Presidents. The fact I think is that most of the world is horrified at the result of the US elections, and are using this to point fingers at the system*, but the system hasn't changed, it's just that Democrats are doing a bad job at getting elected.
