Because I used to be one of those people and I’m not now.

Loved my career and the work. Hate where I’m working now. The people, the toxic environment, shit boss and downright unlawful practice. But it’s part time and flexible and I don’t know if it’s just one of those things and I’m expecting too much to find another job I love.

What I do is fairly niche and there’s nothing else at all in the region at the moment so my only options are stay and ride it out or quit and hope something comes up in the next few months. Just looking for other people’s experiences.

It’s shocking the amount of places that still don’t offer flexible working at all, the lowest possible pension contribution, minimum holiday allowance etc

^^ this is so true. So many firms offer crap employee benefits and often you don't find out until you're through the door as its taboo to ask about certain things (e.g. maternity pay and flexible working) during interview even though these are quite key for a lot of women / parents.

Maybe the law should be changed so companies have to disclose their employee policies up front so people can make an informed decision about whether they want to work there. Firms that offer crap benefits generally don't treat their staff that well.

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/10/2018 16:03

I generally really like my job - I am a secondary science teacher with additional responsibility.

I love seeing the pupils I teach develop and learn new things. I like planning activities/experiments I know they will enjoy. I like tracking the progress of a cohort over a year and seeing the difference we make as a team.

There are days/weeks that are hard, stressful and make you question yourself and everything you do but I am in a good school with a supportive senior team and colleagues who are lovely so you get eachother through.

I honestly don't think I could do anything else!

PJBanana · 30/10/2018 16:08

@hollycatberry completely agree.

I always ask - I don’t care if it’s taboo! In my experience the places that offer great benefits will usually tell you... and the ones who don’t, won’t!

With so many companies now offering great employee benefits, I do think some firms will struggle to attract talent soon. In my industry (creative), most places offer really good perks. Those that don’t are seen as much less desirable places to work.

Although I do appreciate that it’s different in other industries!

My job is fine on paper and I have pretty good pay and job stability. I'm worried things would be worse elesewhere. BUT, the workload is unreasonable, the pressure is intense and it's really not good for my health. Last year, I managed to hang on until the Christmas break and then was wiped out for a month. I fear I'm heading the same way this year.

Karenoid · 30/10/2018 16:32

I'm about to quit my job of 15 years to study!! It's been getting gradually worse for a few years now. Toxic atmosphere, high staff turnover and unreasonable demands of the staff we do manage to keep! It's absolutely terrifying (especially with 2 little mouths to feed) but life is too short to he stuck in a job you hate. The thought of still being there in another 15 years makes me want to cry! Here's hoping it all works out!

Satsumaeater · 30/10/2018 16:39

I think I've gotten myself to a place where I don't really feel like I'm worth anything better

Yes this is me. I have gradually lost my confidence in my work abilities over the years and after a poor appraisal in January I felt very low. I saw the job advertised that I am now doing and thought it could have been created for me, but it was a huge pay cut and less good working conditions, as I mentioned upthread. But I was sufficiently conditioned to think it was all I was worth. I am good at the job, but it is a step (a few probably) from what I was doing. It wouldn't matter if it were more flexible.

Also, I need to do it freelance. The lady who covers for my absences gets paid almost as much in a week as I do in a month! Admittedly she pays tax on that, and I am comparing with my net pay, but even so.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/10/2018 17:04

Love it. I'm self employed and that's my career sorted until death.

Cambalamb · 30/10/2018 17:21

Yes I am a Teaching Assistant in a primary school and I love it.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 30/10/2018 18:52

I’m a PA and have always hated it. I’ve studied through it and am almost at my career change point but currently have possibly the most incredible boss I have ever had who has gone out of his way to ensure I am engaged and we now have a project that is in my study discipline and instead of commissioning outside of the organisation he has asked me to. He also has no issue with other things I do that are not really my job being delegated elsewhere and backs me up 100% all the time. This project will help my next move too which means possibly leaving next year once complete but he has given it to me anyway.

I can wfh when I want/need to and I really like all my colleagues. I’ll never like being a PA per se and if he left I would look elsewhere or hope he doesn’t go until I am ready.

AutumnGrace · 30/10/2018 19:13

I love my job. I am an Assistant Headteacher in a large comp. I love my subject, my area of responsibly and busy days . I am also very grateful for the holidays off with my toddler. I feel very blessed!

Cannibal · 30/10/2018 19:21

I enjoy my job, part time jobshare, NHS audiotypist. It interesting work, busy, hectic, never a dull moment in my placeGrin

Thingsdogetbetter · 30/10/2018 19:38

Love my job now. Hated teaching the English national curriculum to students in mainstream who had no interest in Shakespeare and 17th century Romantic poetry. Totally irreverent texts and everything geared towards exam results. Totally unrealistic to expect to instil a love of literature and the language with such shite texts and teaching to the test. Hated that!!!

Now teach English language and academic English to international students in a private school. It's amazing. My passion is back! Less pay, but less stress and no bloody national curriculum constraints. Will never teach mainstream again!

RyvitaBrevis · 30/10/2018 20:23

I can only think of one person I know who really loves their job in RL and probably more than one person who hates their job -- but most are probably somewhere in between.

MissMalice · 30/10/2018 20:24

I love it. I’m self employed doing what I trained to do and want to do and am good at doing. I set my own hours and my own pay.
What I don’t like is the uncertainty, lack of sick pay and not having a social side to work but it’s worth it on balance.

Haggisfish · 30/10/2018 20:27

I love my job. I’m a teacher in a comp with an outstanding head. I’m past the hell that is combining teaching with very small children and am really enjoying it again. I’m developing, learning new skills and still have a laugh with some fab young people and staff.

Ragwort · 30/10/2018 20:31

I love my job, it’s part time hours that I can do to suit myself, I have loads of autonomy, it’s interesting and varied, the pay isn’t very good but I’m at the stage in life (mortgage paid off etc) that pay is not the most important factor. I feel valued & I feel that I make a small difference to the world. I frequently go in on my days off when there is no real need to but every time I open the door at my place of work I have a smile on my face.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 30/10/2018 20:34

I enjoy aspects of my job, and I really like my immediate colleagues. There are aspects of it that I hate, and I know there is no progression. I have just put in a request to drop to four days, and think that would help. I hope my manager approves it.

Mummabear2212 · 30/10/2018 20:40

I love bits of my job. I'm a teacher in a FE college and the sector is under massive strain. Each year I wait to be made redundant. It's a toxic, bitchy department where comments are made very loudly about leaving just after 5 (we teach until 5). I hate the environment and all lfnthe above.... but, in my classroom, with my students when I close the door and teach. I love it. I'm just finishing Mat leave and going back part time. I need to start making some decisions.

ForalltheSaints · 30/10/2018 21:03

I enjoy mine and most of the people I work with. I don't go to work to make friends, and working in London you do not meet them outside work, but they are pleasant to work with and take pride in the job.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 30/10/2018 21:12

Today I enjoyed as much banter as my Baron Cohen score permits, ate a delicious lunch, listened to an extended trance mix, and annoyed at least 2 Audi drivers. Bonuses included doing it under the minimum shift, and getting a vehicle that worked.

topsyanddim · 30/10/2018 21:24

I used to really like mine. But it’s all changed incredibly quickly with some company changes. Now I’m in a workplace as many have described above - toxic and poorly managed with a bullying culture. My confidence has been totally destroyed.

I’m well paid and need to maintain this so don’t really know where to turn now. I’m the other side of 40 and all the careers I could retrain for seem to pay so poorly.....if anyone has any ideas let me know!

Chickoletta · 30/10/2018 21:25

I’m a teacher and I love my job. I work 3.5 days per week and have management responsibilities so it’s reasonably stressful but never boring. He hours are family friendly but I bring work home most evenings. Mostly, I love the kids and have brilliant colleagues - I laugh until I cry most days at work and feel that I make a difference: it doesn’t get much better than that in my book.

OneStepMoreFun · 30/10/2018 22:06

I love my job. It's freelance, so I can pick and choose how much I work, who I work with and what projects I take on. It's really varied, creative and interesting.

The pay is just about OK. It used it be great but it's frozen for about five years at the same rate, and has steeply decreased in one of the core areas I work in. I also work alone for much of the time and am sick of being at home 24/7. I also find it so hard to switch off and find myself working at 6am and again at 11am. All the admin is unpaid too.

But it beats commuting. Today I just took a day off and had fun all day with friends. Tomorrow I'll work to catch up. I love that flexibility. And generally, I love my clients. They are hard-working, intelligent appreciative people who value what I do for them and pay on time.

babbscrabbs · 30/10/2018 22:08

I really like my job and love the people I work with, and feel I'm paid a decent wage for it. It's creative, fun, varied, flexible, part-time and I have a lot of autonomy. Downsides are sometimes it's stressful when it's busy and I don't feel particularly intellectually challenged a lot of the time.

In a perfect world I'd work at the same company but on slightly different projects and fewer or much more flexible hours - I'd love to be able to have a bit more time off with the DCs in the holidays.

PinkLady01 · 30/10/2018 22:17

My day job is really boring but I’m about to join the army reserves so hopefully a bit more excitement to come Smile
