Because I used to be one of those people and I’m not now.

Loved my career and the work. Hate where I’m working now. The people, the toxic environment, shit boss and downright unlawful practice. But it’s part time and flexible and I don’t know if it’s just one of those things and I’m expecting too much to find another job I love.

What I do is fairly niche and there’s nothing else at all in the region at the moment so my only options are stay and ride it out or quit and hope something comes up in the next few months. Just looking for other people’s experiences.

I earn decent but hate my current workplace. Quite toxic, hierarchical and nepotism is rife. Definitely a face fits culture. It’s boring too as nothing gets done quickly. Every decision takes months because there’s a blame culture if it goes wrong. Cue arse covering and decision by committees.
I’ve worked for a few firms where toxic people at a senior level have made created problems through bad decision making and poor leadership. Would love to work for a firm with a more progressive approach to work and no egotistical and aggressive senior management.

Miggeldy · 29/10/2018 21:39

What are these great jobs that everyone is doing?

I've never had a job that I liked.

ChairinSage · 29/10/2018 21:42

I hate my current job. I left a job I loved because I was head hunted for this position and offered a significant payrise and a much shorter commute. Unfortunately, the grass is not greener. I have had my confidence knocked so badly I'm thinking of a career change so I can get away. The management style is brutal and the atmosphere is awful, staff sickness is at record levels and I regret leaving my last job every day.

DramaAlpaca · 29/10/2018 21:43

I love my job, it's responsible, flexible and reasonably well paid. The only problem is there simply aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to be done and I have to work more hours than I ideally want to.

Andro · 29/10/2018 21:46

Miggeldy - I started out as a researcher and now head up the R&D division for a private company, I report directly to the board and they want to keep me so they give me the space to do my job.

Bambamber · 29/10/2018 21:46

I have recently completely changed careers. My old job i enjoyed but moral was awful, work load was unmanageable and people put more effort into complaining about others not doing their job than actually doing their own job.

I've taken a pay cut but am now working in an area that I've always wanted to work in and am passionate about. From the first day I felt like I fit into the team straight away and I look forward to going to work

MrsPinkCock · 29/10/2018 22:17

@brownmouse ha, yes you are me. I’ve also been backed into a senior corner and work from home a lot. 3 days a week usually because my boss hates me and sends me home at every possible opportunity

Horrendous work environment, toxic, bullying, favouritism and the rest. I'm 52 and have never been in this situation before. The last 5 years have been awful. I can't leave there are no jobs here. I live for the weekends. The up side is I deal with some nice people in other offices.

I am pretty resilient but this is hateful. I just pray the stress doesn't shorten my life. Yep it's that bad. If I leave I'll lose my house. I need to change things. I will change things!!!

OP thanks for posting. It gave me a chance to get it off my chest. Best wishes to everyone in a horrible situation x

LakeIsle48 · 29/10/2018 22:35

Sorry to derail but I am loving Miggeldy!!! So funny, sorry in joke about Irish president.

NerrSnerr · 29/10/2018 22:35

I like my job. I have managed to walk into a role with lots of flexibility, interesting work, a nice team and good management. I could work upwards but then I'd have to give up the flexibility so will stay where I am while I have small children.

If I won enough money on the premium bonds to pay off the mortgage I would hand my notice in. I like my job but I work to earn money, there's things I would prefer to do.

DeborahDowner · 29/10/2018 22:36

Maybe all of us on here backed into a senior corner should pool our resources & start a really awesome non toxic company doing something brilliant. Just a thought Smile

notacooldad · 29/10/2018 22:41

I love my job. I have been doing this and variations of it for years.
For what I do and where I live I am wellpaid with good management.

thefirstmrsrochester · 29/10/2018 22:41

I love my job, so much so that if I could afford to, I would do it for free. Stressful, emotionally draining, and always on my mind, and I would not change a thing.

Amaaboutthis · 29/10/2018 22:44

I really enjoy my job. I’m interested in what I do, I have a great team, I get on with my CEO, it’s flexible and I can work from home if I need to. It’s also pretty well paid. Can’t complain

cardibach · 29/10/2018 22:47

I’m another who likes the actual job, but hates the way my current workplace is ‘organised’. There’s a lot of mismanagement, bullying and scapegoating. It is a risk to my mental health.

Fortheloveofscience · 29/10/2018 22:47

Hate my actual job, but absolutely love the company I work for. Really wish they’d start treating me badly to make it easier to leave Grin.

PersonaNonGarter · 29/10/2018 22:47

I love my job, although the work/life balance can easily tip the wrong way (law) it usually doesn’t - mainly because I work for sane busy women bosses who I completely respect.

I had to leave two jobs in quick succession to get here, though. And I did that against conventional wisdom about how my CV will look. So what, I am happier, with better prospects.

Don’t stay in a shit job. Skill up and move, or move to skill up.

Seniorcitizen1 · 29/10/2018 22:49

Have always loved my job - not always like my employer even at Director level, but now have my own company and just love it

newyorkartist · 29/10/2018 23:47

I made a major career change a few years ago and now work in the arts. It isn't well paid but I have a lot of autonomy and can largely choose my own workload and priorities and how I go about my work, e.g. whether I work from home for a day, or set up meetings, or whatever. The hardest part of my work is that I deal with a lot of quite difficult people, though lots of them are lovely too! And the hours can be long sometimes, though are mostly quite flexible. It's very varied, which is good for me, as I get depressed when things are too samey, and it can be quite glamorous sometimes - in the last two weeks I've been given wine, flowers (three times) and a book of poetry, and been taken out to lunch by a journalist. Smile

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 30/10/2018 07:39

I'm self-employed and love both my jobs, probably because neither of them involve much face-to-face time with other people. I don't do brilliantly in a normal work environment.

Polarbearflavour · 30/10/2018 08:14

I’ve never liked any job! I’ve had lots of okay jobs that pay the mortgage.

Current job is part time at a university. It’s very laid back but also unstimulating. If I won the lottery I would be out of there like a shot!

I’m always surprised when people love going to work.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 30/10/2018 08:22

I love my job. I teach part time and haven't ever had that moment of falling out of love with it yet. It can be difficult at times meeting everyone's expectations and still being in control at home but I can't imagine doing anything else.

Full-time would be an entirely different thing, though; it simply wouldn't work for our family while the DC are young. Teachers I know who've fallen out of love with it are generally just too exhausted and drained.

BirdieInTheHand · 30/10/2018 08:28

I would quit if I win the lottery but since that's unlikely I'm happy going into work.

I'm senior enough to make a difference, very well paid, set my own agenda, work with some really smart interesting people and I learn new stuff every day.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 30/10/2018 08:35

I honestly loved my job. Loved my colleagues, the customers, just everything about it really. I worked my way up from part time hours to Assistant Manager and was so proud of myself. Then I met my DH and things started to go wrong.

DH was the manager of another venue within the company although we met through friends not work. My boss hated us being together. I think part of it was territorial as there is slight (supposed to be healthy) competition between different venues.

Previously we'd gotten on so well and after that he made my life a living hell to the point that I was signed off with work related stress whilst pregnant. I'm on mat leave at the moment but I know 100% I won't return to work. It has absolutely destroyed me and I've lost so much because of what he did. DH no longer works for the company either.

I don't think I'll ever love a job as much as I loved that one.

Satsumaeater · 30/10/2018 08:47

I like the content of my job but I don't like the working hours or the commute.

I mentioned on the cycling at night thread that I am now walking to and from the station on the days I go into the office instead of cycling (as I don't feel safe cycling in the dark, even with lights etc) and it has added 15 minutes to either end of the day. I wish I could do the job from home all the time - and preferably part-time.
