Because I used to be one of those people and I’m not now.

Loved my career and the work. Hate where I’m working now. The people, the toxic environment, shit boss and downright unlawful practice. But it’s part time and flexible and I don’t know if it’s just one of those things and I’m expecting too much to find another job I love.

What I do is fairly niche and there’s nothing else at all in the region at the moment so my only options are stay and ride it out or quit and hope something comes up in the next few months. Just looking for other people’s experiences.

Hate it. With a passion. I dread going every day. I used to like it, then I got moved to a different role as part of my "development" and it's actually been a step backwards.

Thankfully, my company is funding a professional qualification so I'm going to stick it out for the last academic year.

Roll on July...

Leannakate · 30/10/2018 09:54

I love my job! I'm a teacher (not in the UK) and I wake up happy and excited to go to work every day! To the point that I no longer get much Friday excitement or Sunday night dread because I genuinely enjoy every day like I used to only enjoy the weekends.

Marketbarga1n1 · 30/10/2018 11:10

About a year ago I was made redundant from a job that was interesting and I enjoyed working with lots of different people. Being made redundant puts everything into perspective. I work shifts in my current job, that allows me to enjoy my family, friends and hobbies. My job also pays all my bills.

brownmouse · 30/10/2018 11:23

This is a very cathartic thread.

It's interesting that so many us feel in a senior corner. I think that men in this situation either become Directors or self-employed consultants taking in cash. Flustered middle-aged juggling women seem to be taken less seriously in the same situation which results in them giving it all up be florists instead. It seems a waste of so much experience!

Sorry to derail but I am loving Miggeldy!!! So funny, sorry in joke about Irish president.

Thank you.
I have attached a nice picture of Miggeldy at the ATM.

I hate my job. Low paid, spread thin, high staff turn over and certain senior co-workers who test my patience often. But I have always made excuses to stay - "Pay for a wedding," "Pay for a house," "Baby," "New car,"

I keep saying I'm going to make the jump but to be honest I think I've gotten myself to a place where I don't really feel like I'm worth anything better.

Milliepede · 30/10/2018 12:11

I started a new job at the beginning of the month. I absolutely hate it. I have begun to cry on the way to work. I dont like the majority of the team and the work itself is quite boring, not what I thought it was going to be like. When there, I ama completely different person - withdrawn, quiet and morose, not me at all. I am so unhappy there that it is having an adverse affect on my mental health. Needless to say I am applying for other jobs.

brownmouse · 30/10/2018 12:12

" I think I've gotten myself to a place where I don't really feel like I'm worth anything better."

THIS. I think this is what happens to women... men's self-confidence seems to soars as we are depleted...

April2020mom · 30/10/2018 12:12

I love my job. I teach small children at a school part time. It’s immensely rewarding and challenging at times. I also have to deal with the paperwork. Lots of fun.

candlefloozy · 30/10/2018 12:13

I had my dream job about seven years ago. Got made redundant and put into another job about two year ago. That was horrendous and left to my current job. I hate it some days. Some days it's neither here nor there. I think I'll always be striving for that perfect job. But I don't think it exists for me anymore.

JaniceBattersby · 30/10/2018 12:25

Absolutely love my job. I work part time as a journalist. On my days off I itch to get back to work.

The pay is terrible. Really awful. But every day is exciting, I work with some of the sharpest people I know and the humour is fantastic. I get to help people and make a real difference in the amazing community I work in. Would never leave, even if I won’t the lottery.

magpie24 · 30/10/2018 12:41

I actually really enjoy my job. The team are supportive, the pay is great and I work from home two days a week. I work for a bank.

GreenShadow · 30/10/2018 12:43

I've been lucky.

My full-time 'career' was stimulating and involved working with like-minded people although it was in a somewhat insulated from the real world environment. Used to enjoy going to work (though wouldn't say I 'loved' it).
My current part-time post-children job, I also enjoy though for very different reasons. I want to know what's going on at work on my days off and then look forward to going back in after a day or weekend off. Maybe if I was full time I might not enjoy it so much. The only down side is some of the downright nasty people we have to deal with on a regular basis.

spidey66 · 30/10/2018 12:50

I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10. It's OK, my colleagues are nice and the commute isn't too bad, but I've been doing the job for donkeys years (work as a mental health nurse, so different teams and trusts but the same kind of work) and started to get a bit jaded and burnt out. I'm too old to retrain and am just looking forward to retirement. Seven years, 8 months, 2 weeks and 3 days until I get an NHS pension (not that I'm counting.)

Undercoverbanana · 30/10/2018 12:57

I LOVE my new job.

I used to work in an office full of bitchy women glaring over their computers and making passive aggressive remarks to anyone who had not worked there for 5,000 years and in their little club. Lots of whispering and tittle tattling.

I quit and now work at Aldi. I love it. Everything I do has a real purpose. It’s really busy and energetic and the people are a great group.

Big drop in pay but you only get this life once.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 30/10/2018 13:02

Love my job in community nursing, sometimes it can be really busy and feel like my feet never really touch the ground but I love it. Such a varied and interesting job, meet loads of interesting people and learn about their lives. Love the girls I work with they really have become good friends to me not just work mates

AnnabelleLecter · 30/10/2018 13:20

My job has two site 20 miles apart. So 50/50.
Site a- is a dream, has lovely colleagues, I'm in charge and runs very smoothly.
Site b- badly run, the top boss is awful and is based there and everyone gets blamed, never any praise, terrible atmosphere but the clients and most of the colleagues are lovely but always leaving. No one can hack it for long. I've not got long to go as we are early retiring otherwise I would be looking for something else

NoisyBrain · 30/10/2018 13:21

I hate my job. I have maybe 2 days a month where it's not awful.

The people I work with are nice and were happy to take me on part time (4 days), but they are the only positives. Every single week I need to do at least 6 hours (unpaid) overtime to keep up with workload. If I enjoyed the work itself it might not be so bad, but I'm not excited by it, which makes the volume and pace even harder to deal with.

I'm almost constantly stressed, which affects my home life and sleep quality. I fear for my health if I stay here much longer, but can't afford to leave without a job to go to.

I only started this job last summer but knew straight away I'd made a mistake. I tried to stick it out to see if it improved, but have been job hunting since early this year.

Mammazeede a well-paid, low stress, creative job is my Holy Grail! I have got to the point where I don't believe such a job exists. You've given me hope!

Bluesmartiesarebest · 30/10/2018 13:53

My job was quite enjoyable but I became ill and was retired on medical grounds. Ironically my health is much better now that I don’t keep getting constant infections from my colleagues. I don’t miss work at all!

Haberpop · 30/10/2018 14:00

I love my job. I look after children with very complex health needs. many of whom are on non-invasive ventilation, this means they need someone with them 24/7 so we work days/nights/weekends. At night we sit with the child so the parents can sleep and by day we provide care meaning the rest of the family can go out and do things that are usually very difficult for them to do (even if it is a quick whizz round Tesco or taking a sibling to a club). I do not earn a fortune but every day I make a difference to someone's life and the reward in that is priceless.

Kemer2018 · 30/10/2018 14:14

I hate my job and dread going in. Theres no sense of urgency and things are so slow moving I was outrun by a slug the other day.
The system is rotten from the top down and getting the job done is becoming impossible. It won't be much longer before the post is untenable.
I only stay because i don't find my colleagues annoying, the pay is best I've had since returning to work.
Plus it's part-time and flexible(council) so slim pickings for me.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 30/10/2018 14:52

I have never had a job I liked. I just tolerate it because I need to earn money. And I have never even earned that much! I wish I didn't have to work.

MiddlingMum · 30/10/2018 15:36

I love my job, but I'm self-employed and have got to the stage where I don't have to do anything I don't enjoy. I do know I'm fortunate.

PJBanana · 30/10/2018 15:46

I liked my old job. I left at the beginning of the year due to a huge lifestyle change, and I’ve regretted it ever since. It was relaxed, creative and paid quite well, plus I worked with a brilliant team. Occasionally there were shit times, but I mostly enjoyed it! Great benefits too (flexitime, good pension, buy/sell holidays, staff discount, on site parking etc).

It’s only since I’ve been looking for a new job over the last few weeks that I’ve realised how good I had it there. It’s shocking the amount of places that still don’t offer flexible working at all, the lowest possible pension contribution, minimum holiday allowance etc. And I’ve noticed the amount of places that aren’t reachable by public transport but also provide no parking. Sounds so shallow, but once you’ve had these things it’s very hard to go back!

I’ve really realised how massively I fucked up when I left my old job. I fear it may be the best one I will ever have!

speakout · 30/10/2018 15:51

I love my job.

But I am self employed and work from home. I choose my hours and I have no commute. It pays well,I love what I do - it's like getting paid to play mostly.
