To ask if you have perfect teeth?

BeeMyBaby · 28/10/2018 22:29

And by perfect I mean no fillings or pain, not how white or straight they are.

I know of a woman with two children in her forties with no fillings.

I was very proud of my teeth but got a surface filling at 29 when pregnant with my 3rd child (relevant because pregnancy can weaken your teeth), and at 31 i have been told that I have brushed my teeth so hard that I now have receding gums causing me daily pain (particularly on the tooth that had the surface filling), so the nerve is now almost showing and anything that touches it is sore.

I just guess I wanted to know if everyone else had great teeth and I was going to end up being the only woman my age with their teeth falling out or actually it's pretty standard for your teeth to go downhill when you are over 30?

I’m going to come across as a nob but yeah I do have perfect teeth.

I’ve never had a filling, tooth pain or an extraction and I’m actually regularly asked who done my veneers (I don’t have veneers)

Everything else about me is shite though 😂

longwayoff · 29/10/2018 09:06

At 60, no fillings, 1 extraction plus wisdom teeth out. Since then 4 years on Anastrazole, a breast cancer drug, bits chipping off teeth, one crumbled, nails splitting, hair falling out more heavily, never away from the dentist. Recommend calcium supplements and crossing fingers if any of you are on similar medication.

tiggerkid · 29/10/2018 09:08

Never had perfect teeth. Got unfortunate DNA from my parents in that regard. DH has amazing teeth: only one filling so far. That's it.

CherryBlossom23 · 29/10/2018 09:10

My teeth look nice due to two years of braces but I have a lot of fillings due to a combination of naturally weaker enamel, lots of sweets as a child and improper brushing as a child. I take much better care of them now but wish I had less fillings Sad

Pollypanda · 29/10/2018 09:10

I’m 28 and have no fillings and have had no dental treatment other than braces. I go once a year for a check up and get told everything is fine. I brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush, don’t have a particularly healthy diet (plenty of sugar) but don’t drink fizzy drinks or tea. Also don’t eat lots of fruit. I honestly think much of it is down to genetics as my family is all the same.

zingally · 29/10/2018 09:14

I'm 34. I have two full fillings, and one half-filling. I got them all during my teenage years, between about the ages of 15 and 18.

My teeth are quite sensitive though, which can get annoying with things like icecream!

Woohoo1 · 29/10/2018 09:16

I’m 41 only one tiny filling when I was 17

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 29/10/2018 09:17

I'm 36 and have no fillings. I only brush once per day in the morning, always have done.

NationalShiteDay · 29/10/2018 09:17

I'm 36 and my teeth are in pretty bad condition but they look fabulous thanks to £4k worth of Invisalign and whitening.

My teeth are weak apparently due to something that happened in utero. I had loads of fillings as a kid and my wisdom teeth came through sideways and half impacted. Meant they were very hard to brush and they had to be removed.

Most of my molars have composite filings. Just had to have another 3 as despite my excellent oral hygiene, a recent bout of hyperemesis during pregnancy meant that the already weak enamel was damaged.

They look amazing though and I take excellent care of them!!

Woohoo1 · 29/10/2018 09:17

And I didn’t go to the dentist for 15 years. When I went (pregnancy) I needed no treatment not even a scale and polish the dentist was flabbergasted. Told me I was very silly for not going

BeeMyBaby · 29/10/2018 16:39

@Candlelights2345 amazing about your grandmother! My DH told me no one over 80 could have all their own teeth and it would be impossible, that they are meant to fall out as you get older so it's really interesting to read this.

@Villanelle123 did your dentist suggest anything that could be done about it? I read online about bonding (they put some kind of gum coloured resin stuff which protects the nerves of the teeth so stops the pain) but I've no idea of the cost and don't have access to a dentist at the moment.

Yes I'd like to know if there's anything that can be done about receding gums as well Sad

Otherwise no fillings yet (45) God knows how

Strokethefurrywall · 29/10/2018 17:05

Yes, I'm 39 - straight white teeth, no fillings, cavities etc.

Don't do anything special other than brush them. I reckon it's luck of the genetic draw!

boomerang1 · 29/10/2018 17:10

Don't want to jinx myself here but I'm 30, I have 2 children and my teeth are fine. Never had a filling or tooth out or anything. I had pain once during pregnancy but it lasted about a week.
My teeth are also straight and white but that's because a couple of years ago I paid for braces and whitening. Money very well spent.
I'm lucky I know because I did smoke for almost 10 years.
I'm sorry about your troubles op and others my mum suffers with her teeth too.
Don't worry I have painful skin troubles so I didn't get off Scot free

Chrisinthemorning · 29/10/2018 17:13
  1. 2 teeth out for ortho, 2 wisdom teeth. 1 small white filling which replaced a fissure sealant. Receding a bit due to overbrushing. I’m a dentist and see lots of people with no fillings and none needed these days. I also see a lot of bad dental disease.
Babdoc · 29/10/2018 17:15

It’s lovely that people are keeping their own teeth into old age, but it’s an increasing problem for dentists and anaesthetists.
When these elderly patients become demented, aggressive and refuse to allow tooth brushing, they unsurprisingly develop cavities and toothache.
But they’re unable to cooperate with dental treatment, so need general anaesthesia despite their coincidental heart and lung diseases of old age making them very high risk! I’ve spent up to 3 hours per patient trying to handle unstable angina and fluctuating blood pressure during GA dental treatment where every ancient tooth had ossified into the jaw and needed drilled out of solid bone to be extracted.
Obviously I’m not suggesting everyone should get dentures at 60 just in case, but keeping your own teeth is not an unmixed blessing!

DramaAlpaca · 29/10/2018 18:11

My DM is 82 & has all her own teeth, which she's obsessive about looking after & are still in reasonable condition. She's very proud of them & would be seriously upset if she had to have anything major done. DF has had dentures since his 40s and reckons they are much easier to look after.

alphajuliet123 · 29/10/2018 19:29

Mine look fine but are fucked. Currently battling an abscess which I seem to get every October. It's like summer ends, I get a nasty cold / cough / chest infection which takes ages to shift then just as I'm feeling human again, bam, teeth flare up.

Teeth are what make me KNOW that God doesn't exist.

YesitsJacqueline · 29/10/2018 19:35

I'm 43 1 child never had a filling. Last time i had toothache I had bother with my wisdom teeth in my early 20s.

When i was 36 I paid to have metal braces to straighten my teeth, very much worth it. My teeth are not Simon Cowell white but they have no stains.
I Don't smoke or eat sweets or drink fizzy drinks. I am starting to notice receding gums.

Babymamaroon · 29/10/2018 19:44

I don't have any fillings etc. I just go to the Hygienist every 6 months, brush and floss every day.

I was never allowed too many sweet treats when little which my have helped.

Eminybob · 29/10/2018 19:45

I have loads of fillings due to a calcium deficiency when I was young caused by medication my mum was on when she was pregnant with me.

I also didn’t go to the dentist between the ages of 16 and 34 Blush but surprisingly my teeth weren’t that bad when I eventually went, they just needed a really good scale and polish and a filling replacing which had come out.

However, I do have receding gums, which worries me a lot, although my dentist doesn’t seem that bothered.

MrsPinkCock · 29/10/2018 20:12

I don’t have fillings, they’re fairly white but I do bleach them. They’re also straight.

Never had fillings, tooth ache, tooth removal etc.

I do have crowns on my front two teeth after smashing them when I was 11 though, so not perfect!

Celestia26 · 29/10/2018 20:20

I have great teeth, but it's mainly because I have had years of dental treatment due to jaw and facial deformaties.

I'm usually at the dental hospital every couple of months so any issues are flagged very quickly, so I suppose I'm lucky in a way.

I have short roots due to extensive braces, and one filling, but that's it.

My jaw is atrocious however, so I suppose it's a trade off!

Scotinoz · 29/10/2018 20:24

I'm 40 and have straight, white teeth with no fillings. Well, not Hollywood white but they're not bad. I did have my wisdom teeth out but that's it.

I think there's a bit of luck, but I do brush and floss, visit the dentist and enjoy a regular scale and polish. Oh, and my parents were fanatical about teeth.
