To ask for you help finding a romantic night away NORTH WEST

Posting in AIBU for traffic.

I've just realised that next Saturday night we'll be child AND work free for the first time in nearly a year.

I'm thinking of organising a surprise night away for my DP. He's been working all hours of late due to business issues and also been looking after me and the children whilst I've been really poorly and I'd love to surprise him.

I'm looking for a nice romantic hotel/village/town in the north west uk (no more than 2 hours drive from Manchester) preferably the hotel to be really boutique style. Would consider a nice B&B too.

I guess I'm asking for people to give me their opinions and anywhere nice they've stayed which doesn't cost a small fortune but is lovely.

TIA x

I would suggest New Brighton, Wallasey. Go to Travelodge. (Dead cheap and quiet,) 5 minutes walk from beach, very quiet area, watching the ships come in and out across the estuary, beautiful sunrise AND sunset. Massive beach, great walks, half a dozen eateries to choose from, a couple of bars, a small cinema, and a small retail park if you wanna get some food or wine etc.... And only 20 mins on train to Liverpool.

We went in the Spring, for 3 days, and it was perfect. Smile

Chrysalis7 · 28/10/2018 22:06

There may be other hotels, we didn't look, as Travelodge was a new and quiet one. And was £32 for the night. Smile

mumof2sarah · 28/10/2018 22:06

@Chrysalis7 thank you I will have a look there now. I know when you're in a relationship it's part and parcel to help and support each other. But he's just been amazing on so many different levels and I want to make it amazing for us x

That's OK. Smile Don't know exactly where you are in Manchester, but it's only roughly an hour's drive. (90 mins on train...)

It's sooooooo beautiful Smile

mnahmnah · 28/10/2018 22:10

I would definitely say the Lakes. I can highly recommend the Inn in the Lake in Glenridding, on Ullswater. But there are lots dotted around the lake

Chrysalis7 · 28/10/2018 22:11

Thing about the Travelodge too is that it is 5 minutes walk to the beach, right near the eateries, (and bars) and close to the small retail park, and as I said, maybe 20 minutes on the train to Liverpool, if you fancy a bit of City shopping and sightseeing before you leave. Grin

The beach is huge and you can walk for ages... Smile

Before kids we used to have nights away - Chester, York, Harrogate are all lovely.

If you want peace and quiet the Lakes is always good - this place is gorgeous

Or The Swan at Newby Bridge

RedPandaMama · 28/10/2018 22:14

Me and DP are from around Manchester. I would always have Chester as my first choice - romantic, beautiful boutiquey hotels with charming features in old Tudor buildings (not cheap but not mad either) and great restaurants and often good shows and arty things on. Plus all the history stuff!

Also Lancaster is nice (I went to uni there), the Lakes are peaceful, Liverpool if you stay down by the docks is lovely (I recommend staybridge suites and their breakfast is brilliant).

Chrysalis7 · 28/10/2018 22:15

Oh yeah the Lake District is nice too.

And I can vouch for Chester. And also Shrewsbury. (Lived in both!) Smile Both lovely places....

Depends what you want and how far you want to travel. Smile

Chrysalis7 · 28/10/2018 22:17

Going back to New Brighton... it actually looks across the River Mersey (towards Liverpool.)

You probably know that though. Grin

Wonkypalmtree · 28/10/2018 22:20

Lake vrnwy

Unescorted · 28/10/2018 22:22

The Old Hall in Whitehough, High Peak. Catch the train from Piccadilly to Chinley. The food is good, amazing beer and atmosphere. Walking out the back on hills or canals.

ShadyLady53 · 28/10/2018 22:23

Peckforton Castle in Cheshire is very romantic. About £175 for the night budgetwise.

puguin86 · 28/10/2018 22:23

Linder fell hotel in the Lake District!! Beautiful!!! And feels really luxurious x

PJBanana · 28/10/2018 22:25

Chester! Oddfellows hotel is gorgeous, but may not have availability. If you like steak, Upstairs at the Grill is incredible.

Frescoed · 28/10/2018 22:26

Escape B&B in Llandudno is lovely, unique/boutique style and the town has charm (if a little faded) and a glorious sea view, and within 2 hours drive of Manchester. I took my DH for a weekend after he sat a professional exam. Hope St Hotel in Liverpool is lovely, restaurants/bars/cathedrals and beautiful architecture in stumbling distance. More rural is the Inn at Whitewell in the Forest of Bowland, or the Drunken Duck beyond Ambleside (latter might be a bit far in terms of driving though). Off the tourist track these days, but full of old-fashioned glamour is the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. The natural bay is gorgeous, and the 1920s hotel is really something. Hope you find somewhere nice.

MrsMarmite1234 · 28/10/2018 22:27

Have a look at Falcon Manor in Settle. Just over an hour drive from Manchester.

SwedishEdith · 28/10/2018 22:27

Beaumaris - lovely.

HariboLecter · 28/10/2018 22:28

Northorp Hall Country House, some good deals on laterooms.

sissyinthesummertime · 28/10/2018 22:43

Have a look at Dannah Farm in the Peak District. DH had the best night ever here, just before he had a major operation. We stayed in the room with the secret garden, complete with private hot tub. The food was amazing. Very special indeed.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 28/10/2018 22:53

Place marking as some of these sound lovely!

Cumbrianlass66 · 28/10/2018 22:54

My preference would be the Lakes look at hotels to see if something in budget not sure of your budget but if you leave early you could have two full days and one nights accommodation or three full days and two nights accommodation and stay somewhere a bit more luxurious and make the most of it. Augill Castle is beautiful but lots of places on offer. Or Northumberland is also lovely depends what you like and want and whether you want a chilled time without having to dress up or whether you want to dress up and be in a big city. Enjoy.

www.mittonhallhotel.co.uk
I stayed here a few years ago and it remains among the nicest and most memorable places I have ever stayed. The hotel bar was fab as was the restaurant and near enough to walk to some other lovely pubs. Highly recommend.

mumof2sarah · 28/10/2018 23:12

Thank you every one I'm loving all these and can't wait to have a good look at them all tomorrow. I'm completely exhausted and spent the last hour unwell so don't want to spend too much time on a screen. Please keep them coming I can't wait to have a nosey and find something perfect xxx

I'd go for The Lakes too, gorgeous at this time of year too. Check out Storrs Hall Hotel, it's beautiful.

I'd pick York over Chester any day, it's much nicer.

Places like Buxton and Bakewell are lovely too and not far away.
