Child seeing hygienist

Took 15 year old daughter for dental check up today (NHS dentist) and dentist advised that she needs an hygienist appointment. I went to book the appointment and they said it is £52.70?!
AIBU to query why I would be paying for a child’s dental treatment? I have Google’d it but can’t seem to find a definitive answer. They say something about if it is clinically necessary etc, but no real answer. Does anybody have any experience of this please?!

Dentist here. I’m kind of on the fence on this. The dentist should really provide a basic clean on the nhs. That means tartar removal only. Not stains. Not plaque. But definitely all tartar. But a teenager really should not be getting much tartar. If they are it’s due to poor oral hygiene.

So. If your (NT) child has been told over and over to improve their oral hygiene, and shown how to do so, and is still not doing it, then I would be asking you to pay to see the hygienist. Because it’s not the job of the NHS to do the home care properly.

For what it’s worth, we don’t have a hygienist. I do all cleaning myself. And charge privately for doing what I would refer to the hygienist for. And I charge £75 minimum. Most people don’t bother!

Thank you very much for such a concise answer! 🙂 I was hoping a dentist would see my post.
I am afraid to say, this is a 15 year old that has been told endlessly (by myself) that she isn’t paying enough attention to her oral hygiene! I booked the appointment anyway, but just wanted to check that this was normal practice. Sad thing is, up until the age of 12, she was fab at brushing teeth etc, she has just got lazy with it!
Thanks again, hygienist it is! 😬
