To think LUSH have gone too far?

I used to use Lush products quite often, I loved their soaps and bath bombs etc. I slowly stopped using them because I noticed the prices were ever increasing and pink bathwater loses its novelty when it's costing you £5+. Regardless, I still always went in before Christmas to buy my DM a bottle of Snow Fairy because it's her absolute fave.

I went in yesterday to buy her annual bottle and literally couldn't believe that they were asking £27.95 for the big bottle. That's £28 for a bottle of SOAP!! I even had to check with a staff member that I hadn't misread, she said they'd just put the prices up again. I realise they use natural ingredients and are cruelty free, but for me this still doesn't justify this price.

AIBU to think they've gone too far and you'd have to be crazy to pay that?

This thread made me curious so I did a quick email search (I know prices go up everywhere etc etc) but...

In April 2006 I bought a shampoo bar for £5.95.

In May 2017 I bought the same for £6.25.

Now online I see they are £7.50.

Not only that but the ones I bought were 65g according to my emails and now they say 55g.

That’s quite an increase.

YANBU

My absolute favourite moisturiser is Celestial from Lush. Used it for ages but EVERY time I went into get more they had stuck another pound on it. It was £12 when I first bought it about 4 years ago. Now it's £17! Can't justify the cost.

It's all about perception isn't it? Britain banned animal testing for cosmetic purposes in 1998, so Lush in the UK aren't all that different from anyone else, but there's a killing to be made if you can persuade enough people that you're somehow different and better

I'll be interested to see what happens if they ever want to expand to selling in mainland China, since foreign-manufactured cosmetic products must be tested on animals before hitting the shops there

Totally agree. I always get at least 2 lush gift sets for christmas, but the price of them now is ridiculous. Since their awful spycop campaign I've actively boycotted them. The price of bath bombs is atrocious.
I've shopped at Lush for years, just cant afford it now.
Have gone back to body shop for now, but good to see alternatives on this thread, thanks!

lenalove · 23/10/2018 11:35

Ugh lush and their over-enthusiastic staff/over-priced gimmicky products grumble YANBU!

Lockheart · 23/10/2018 11:38

I appreciate the recommendations for alternative solid shampoo bars, but I won’t buy scented stuff off the internet (unless it’s a perfume I already like) because I like to smell them first.

Basecamp65 · 23/10/2018 11:43

I am not someone who really goes shopping or takes notice of high street trends but the spycops stuff alerted me to Lush and I looked at them - finally a shop with real ethics - then they backed down so back to my local supplier

Soubriquet · 23/10/2018 11:46

I use one particular bubble bath bar from then

The comforter

A little goes a long way so a £5 bar will usually give me between 6-7 baths.

It’s worth that price in my opinion as I absolutely adore the smell

Yogagirl123 · 23/10/2018 11:48

Crazy price, I wouldn’t pay that.

😂 can’t believe a pp thought a kilo bottle would last a year! I am obviously over generous using my shower gel. 250ml lasts me 10 days max.

I thought that too, I can get her a whole board of bath stuff for that price elsewhere so just seems ridiculous to me, but I don't want to disappoint her so not sure what to do at the minute

Just don't buy the big bottle Confused

abacucat · 23/10/2018 11:50

I am just amazed at how long some are saying shower gel lasts them.

mostdays · 23/10/2018 11:54

I love Lush's politics, but their prices are very steep. Maybe that's just the way it is- perhaps ethics go hand in glove with high costs.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 23/10/2018 11:55

It’s a lot more ethical than a shop that pretends to be cruelty free, while using palm oil, putting a tied up woman in the window who is then tortured by an ‘artist’, forcing staff to wear tee shirts that encourage strangers to kiss them, pushing trans ideology on customers and treating those that don’t want to sign their petition as bigots

Yep, this ^^

The 'kissing customers' stunt made me feel sick.

I used to buy all my hair stuff there, and a few other bits along with Christmas pressies for nieces and nephews. I spent my last pound there about five years ago and then switched to genuinely ethical, smaller companies.

Crucially, the products are much, much better.

ChoudeBruxelles · 23/10/2018 11:55

They went too far with their awful anti police campaign earlier this year #flushlush. (Or actually don’t because they are still full of chemicals like most normal toiletries)

fizzthecat1 · 23/10/2018 11:56

I realise they use natural ingredients

No they don't, it's main ingredient is SLS which is pretty toxic and very cheap

KarmaStar · 23/10/2018 11:57

Try the LOVE BEAUTY AND PLANET suitable for vegans at Sainsbury's.(usually £9.00 in sale at £6.00 on friday)it is gorgeous.smells lovely, three options for the scent one may prefer. The rose and miru miru is especially nice.
LUSH is great for vegan products though the naked products (they have solidified body lotion and sell it without a pot)is difficult to keep at home as too many curious hands reaching out to examine it and the mess gets all over the glass😊.

abacucat · 23/10/2018 11:57

Also laughing at the idea that a tiny company doing a version of a LUSH product is unethical. Companies do this all the time. Obviously it won't be exactly the same as the small company do not have the recipe. But this is normal.

abacucat · 23/10/2018 12:00

Ethical superstore have a wide range of products. Such as this shower gel - Free from artificial colour or fragrance, palm oil, parabens, phthalates, SLS or PEGs.

www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/fair-squared/fair-squared-shower-gel---coconut---250ml/

I am amazed that there is so little awareness of the impact of parabens. Most LUSH products are no more ethical than cheap products from a supermarket.

longwayoff · 23/10/2018 12:00

Has nobody on here heard of a £ shop?Grin

abacucat · 23/10/2018 12:04

Or you could make your own soap.

BrookCreek · 23/10/2018 12:09

Surely the point of a gift is that it's something the recipient will love and probably wouldn't buy themselves.
So if your mum loves the Lush then it will be a treat for her. She might be disappointed with an alternative.
FWIW I never used Lush until a February when I started to try and reduce plastic. I bought a bar of solid shampoo which I winced at paying £7 for. Not only is it a lovely product but it's still going strong so the price per wash is much lower than cheaper liquid shampoo.
