My 4 month old isn't babbling anymore, she smiles and squeals when she sees me but no babbling anymore

Does anyone know why?

Thanks

She's extremely young and learning a great deal of other things.

Has her hearing been checked? Sometimes that can be a reason, if a baby is all stuffed up or has something else wrong with the ears.

She's busy learning all kinds of different things physically, emotionally, socially - please don't worry too much right now.

With all 3 of my children, I have found sometimes that when they learn a skill, they stop doing it for a bit, like as if they're bored now they've mastered it. Mine all did it with crawling and walking, freaked me out! Don't worry, she's so young.

She might be about to roll over. Babies sometimes drop something they’ve learnt to concentrate on something else. Absolutely nothing to worry about!

BunsOfAnarchy · 23/10/2018 00:37

She is plotting in secret against you...dont let those smiles fool you!

My DD started blowing raspberries around 3 months. Then stopped a week later. Another 3 months later shes suddenly 'remembered' this skill.

She dont fool me. I know her cuteness is a coverup for sinister activity 😂.

(I wouldnt worry but if it does end up stressing you out, have a word with doc/HV Smile)

Just double check for an ear infection. Otherwise be patient, it will come back

Unicyclethief · 23/10/2018 00:49

My son never really did that babbling. He started talking late and in full sentences too! I think that is unusual though, I had his hearing checked so often, he was absolutely fine.

Rebecca36 · 23/10/2018 00:50

They all go through phases. Don't worry.

harrietm87 · 23/10/2018 01:08

It’ll just be that she’s concentrating on something else for a while. My baby also stopped babbling at 4 months for a few days and instead started making weird squeaking noises with his mouth closed! He sounded like Sweep from sooty! Anyway after a couple of days of that he went back to his usual babble. Don’t worry.

@spoon19996 how is your baby doing now?
My nearly 4 month old is not really babbling either. Around 2.5 months he was cooing and engaging. Now he's making a high pitched noise like screaming when I try to talk to him but on the whole is generally very quiet. He's my 3rd baby and I never had this with my other 2. Even when he needs a feed he hardly ever cries it's more just a whimper. I am starting to really worry x

moita · 15/12/2020 15:41

@BBS20 I'd ask for a hearing test personally

BBS20 · 15/12/2020 18:29

Thank you for responding. I know he can hear as he startles to loud noises and will look when the kids call him. It's just him not babbling which has worried me as he was definitely doing this before.
