In spite of the best efforts of some on MN and various right-wing Christians.

This is exactly why I’m so in favour. Medical involvement shouldn’t be needed. Trans people aren’t ill.

A fuck load of people who think or just claim to be trans are. Which is why medical assessment is important.

The belief that you are or should be a different sex needs to be explored with professionals not just given a 'oh of course you are if you say it!' response.

I've seen this argument a lot. In which case why do trans people so desperately need access to treatment (puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, top / bottom surgery etc)? Confused

It depends on the technical definition of gender dysphoria I think, like body dysmorphia (which sometimes can have surgical treatment on NHS?) It’s a condition not an illness. Illness implying that something is wrong whereas dysmorphia just is the date of being. Some people can manage their dysmorphia, or don’t experience it, others experience it very strongly and it causes mental health difficulties subsequently so treatment is given to alleviate it.

I fail to see how insisting you are the opposite sex, despite all evidence to the contrary , isn’t a mental health issue.
Feeling aligned with the social norms for the other sex ? Fine. Insisting you actually are that sex ? Not fine.
