Dealing with loss

A close family friend suddenly passed on Friday leaving behind a young child aged 5.
The person who passed was separated from the child's mother but very much played a huge part in his child's life...he had the child most weekends and often during the week too and was one of the best dads I've ever seen.
Anyway, the child's mother has not yet told the child of her fathers passing, instead she has gone abroad for a week to attend a festival leaving the child in the care of her friend.
I know people deal with grief in different ways and she may be running away from her troubles rather than facing them head on but AIBU to think this is a totally inappropriate?

I'm putting myself in her shoes and I'd want my child to know about daddy ASAP, I would want to spend time with her and grieve as a unit and support each other as a family. I just can't get my head around going on holiday without saying anything.

Thoughts ?

Where are the rest of the child's family? Where are the child's father's parents, their grandparents in all of this?

She may want to get her own head straight so that she can manage her feelings enough to tell her child and ficus on suppprting them. She may be utterly in shock - I certainly was when I had a sudden, very traumatic bereavement earlier this year. I went into autopilot and fuck only knows what I did and said for the first couple of weeks.

Who knows.

As long as the 5 year old is ok, delaying shattering their world for a few days isn’t necessarily the worst thing.

You’re probably very shocked also. I’m sorry for your loss x
