Letting a 6 year old watch the Simpsons

sassypants72 · 20/10/2018 21:45

Please good people of Mumsnet help me get across to my DH that the simpsons is not really suitable for 6 year old DD to be watching.

He put it on tonight for her and I went mad saying it's unsuitable. He thinks I'm being very unreasonable, am I ???

OP posts:
Cagliostro · 20/10/2018 22:03

My two love it, we recently started collecting them on DVD. There’s the odd episode I don’t put on when they’re around though like the one when Troy McClure has a sham marriage to hide his fetish :o

Seeing my 9yo giggle like crazy at the sideshow bob rake scene makes it all worthwhile

AnnaBegins · 20/10/2018 22:05

My 3 year old knows that the Simpsons followed by Big bang theory is compulsory weeknight viewing Grin

Figgygal · 20/10/2018 22:06

Why isn't it suitable?
It's not exactly family guy is it

Holdingonbarely · 20/10/2018 22:07

You’re actually mad. Christ poor kid

MidnightAura · 20/10/2018 22:10

I’ve been watching the Simpsons since I was 4. It’s fine for a child.

TwitterQueen1 · 20/10/2018 22:11

Yes, YABvvvU. The Simpsons is one of those incredibly clever shows which has something for everyone at every age. And I say that as one who doesn't particularly like it but recognises that actually it's very clever, witty, appropriate, interesting, etc etc. My middle DD watched it every single night for years and years from a very early age. It was on at 6pm I think.... nothing to fear OP.

InspectorIkmen · 20/10/2018 22:14

Been watching it here since kids were 5ish. They remain unimprisoned and their careers as drug dealers/serial killers/master thieves haven't really taken off.

YABU. Very.

OlennasWimple · 20/10/2018 22:14

Agree with pp that it's a very clever multi layer show - the kids think they are watching a cartoon like their other cartoons and have no idea about the innuendo, political references, popular culture take offs etc etc

YABU

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 20/10/2018 22:15

Christ my 2 year old watches the Simpsons with us.

As TwitterQueen1 said it's one of those rare shows that has a bit of something for everyone. The innuendo goes straight over little ones heads.

And Lisa is a good role model, someone who enjoys learning for the sake of learning but is flawed like the rest of us.

dangerrabbit · 20/10/2018 22:16

Wasn’t it aimed at kids or at least as a family show originally?

Gillian1980 · 20/10/2018 22:16

Yabu.

We’re huge simpsons fans here and 3 year old dd loves it. One of those shows where different ages understand and appreciate different elements. So much goes over young kids heads.

I wouldn’t let her watch any of the Halloween ones though as she might find then scary.

ChalkDoodler · 20/10/2018 22:18

It is classed as a PG rating but in the parent's guide on IMDB there is this in the profanity section -

"Several uses of "hell", "damn" and "crap".

Few uses of bitches, bastards, slut, dick, cock and ass as well as bleeped uses of F-words and/or S-words.

There are several name calling such as : fool, idiot, jerk, moron, jackass, bastard, bitch, freak, jerkoff, etc.

So for me I wouldn't want a 6 year old using those words.

Love51 · 20/10/2018 22:18

I wasn't keen on the Simpsons for mine when they were small. DH was. We reached a compromise of no tree House of horrors episodes. They aren't hugely bothered about it now (DH still loves it though!)

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 20/10/2018 22:19

If you're worried about the Simpson definitely don't watch the Curse of the Wererabbit. I was appalled laughing like a drain at the innuendos in it.

Move2WY · 20/10/2018 22:19

My 4 yo loves the simpsons. Whats not to love?

lostfrequencies · 20/10/2018 22:19

YABU.

Love51 · 20/10/2018 22:20

I think the ruder words from the list upthread are edited out from the daytime version over here. Hell and damn are used a lot though.

Holdingonbarely · 20/10/2018 22:21

What’s wrong with jackass

tillytrotter1 · 20/10/2018 22:35

It's something your child can watch now then at 3 or 4 year intervals and get something else out of it as they get older.

BloodyDraculcasonthis · 20/10/2018 22:37

It's the Simpsons.... It's full of tired catchphrases and nonsensical storylines..
Not exactly Family Guy or South Park.

ileclerc · 20/10/2018 22:46

My 6 yo loves it, I really don't see the issue and I'm strict with TV.

rainingcatsanddog · 20/10/2018 22:48

Yes Yabu. Haven't you watched any animated films? The best ones have jokes that adults understand but kids don't even notice.
Family Guy, South Park and American Dad aren't suitable.

Vampiratequeen · 20/10/2018 22:50

My 4 year old has watched the Simpson. My god it is the Simpsons, it's not like he put Family Guy on.

Havalina · 20/10/2018 23:36

Yabu, even the more "adult" episodes where homer and large are having "snuggle" issues are pretty tame and nothing that would traumatise a child. I can't think of anything that goes too far.

I remember a mum in the dentist once whose kids were explaining family guy to her (they were about 8 and 10). You could see the light dawning in her eyes as they talked...So daddy let's you watch this...😂

Wouldn't have liked to have been her dh when she got home.

Babybearsporij · 20/10/2018 23:42

My 7 year old has recently got into it, I don't think it's inappropriate at all. I'm enjoying watching it again as well!
