Apologies this isn't an aibu but I need answers quickly, my nan has just got seriously ill and it's very touch and go. I need to get there asap but I'm up in the highlands and they are in Devon!! I can't seem to find any flights close by without it taking 9hrs with a 4hr stop in Amsterdam??🤔 is it even possible to get one straight flight?! 😭

Exeter is closest Bristol May have better options. The train from Birmingham takes 3-4 hours but it is direct as well.

CaseStudyResearch · 20/10/2018 13:43

Bristol is 2 hrs by train from Plymouth and the train station is about a 30 mins bus ride from the airport.

LIZS · 20/10/2018 13:44

Exeter, Newquay or I thought there was one at Plymouth.

Scottishlass11e · 20/10/2018 13:46

Plymouth airport has closed, I tried flights to exeter but it came up saying 9hrs at £500!!

Exeter is nearest and you can hire a car there if you drive.

GladAllOver · 20/10/2018 13:48

Sorry, crossed with you.

TheSquirrelofDoom · 20/10/2018 13:49

Exeter is nearest - Flybe fly there from Glasgow and Edinburgh, sometimes direct flights but sometimes with a change in Manchester. Otherwise Bristol and there is a coach service called the Falcon which goes from Bristol airport to Plymouth in a couple of hours. Good luck, hope you can get there soon.

SlideAway82 · 20/10/2018 13:49

Bristol will definitely be your cheaper option although Exeter does have flights to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh. I live in Plymouth myself and travel a lot for work. Alternatively a train to Newcastle and then fly to Exeter?

LIZS · 20/10/2018 13:49

Southampton then train?

Moonshine86 · 20/10/2018 13:49

Have a look on sky scanner. Bristol will have more flights I should imagine. Then train?

SlideAway82 · 20/10/2018 13:51

Exeter is about a 45 minute drive from Plymouth and Bristol Airport is around 2 hours.

Scottishlass11e · 20/10/2018 13:52

Flybe!!! I was trying easy jet and Ryanair! Thank you all

SilverHairedCat · 20/10/2018 13:55

Just use Skyscanner. You want Newquay Airport, Exeter or even Bristol and pick up a hire car.

(I'm near Plymouth, the airport went a long time ago - there are building on the estate now)

onlyfortonight · 20/10/2018 13:59

Exeter is your best bet. There is no Airport in Plymouth. Good luck

LimpidPools · 20/10/2018 14:06

Glasgow to Southampton then get a hire car?

It's a 3.5 hour drive, but if you can get there in time for the 4.30 flight you'll land at 6 so should be with her by midnight.

Otherwise your best bet is probably to set off now and drive all the way. Very best of luck OP. I'm sorry this is happening.

Tinlegs · 20/10/2018 14:17

I am Highlands too and Bristol from Inverness on EasyJet is your best option. FlyBe is to Exeter but more expensive and from Glasgow / Edinburgh.

Malbecfan · 20/10/2018 14:18

EasyJet definitely had Inverness - Bristol a while ago. Worth a look. You could then do the Falcon bus to Plymouth as it's pretty regular.

Alternatively, fly into Exeter with Flybe from Glasgow or Edinburgh. You could also use Manchester as a hub - fly in from wherever and then down to Exeter. HTH

caroloro · 20/10/2018 14:20

My husband does Bristol to Glasgow pretty regularly, direct. Probably a 2-3 hour drive from Bristol to Plymouth depending in the traffic.

schooltripwoes · 20/10/2018 14:22

Exeter is the closest. Flybe flies there from Edinburgh and Glasgow, possibly other Scottish airports too.

Or fly to Bristol (Easyjet from Edinburgh/ Glasgow) and then take the Falcon bus from outside the airport, goes direct to Plymouth (takes about 2hrs).

Celebelly · 20/10/2018 14:25

You can fly Aberdeen to Exeter, changing at Birmingham. I used to do this journey every other month to visit my DP. I'm not sure they fly at weekends, though - you might have to get to Glasgow or Edinburgh for that.

You can also get the train direct Aberdeen to Exeter, but it's long - 10 hours.

Celebelly · 20/10/2018 14:27

And yes, we've often flown to Bristol and hired a car - it's not that long a drive and flights are more regular then to Exeter.

schooltripwoes · 20/10/2018 14:29

Actually, there are very few flights on Saturday afternoons / evenings to the West Country (no business flyers and weekend trippers fly Fri - Sun). Your quickest option maybe to fly to Heathrow or Birmingham and then train / coach to Plymouth.

jimmyhill · 20/10/2018 14:29

Once you've taken getting to the airport and out of the airport (most airports in the SW are several miles outside their cities) you'd be better off getting the train.

wonkylegs · 20/10/2018 14:49

We live in the NE but my family all in the SW.
Newquay & Exeter are the closest but don't have the most flights (Flybe is probably best bet). Bristol has more options as it's much bigger (although be warned it's not the best airport) You can easily hire cars at all of them.
We flew to Bristol easyJet and then drove down to Plymouth when my Grandfather was ill.
I have only ever had problems getting the train and it basically takes all day from here and you've got way further to go.
Hope you get yourself sorted.
