Things not tasting right

Mammylamb · 18/10/2018 19:13

This might sound like an odd aibu. But I’m slightly worried.

I’m vegetarian and eat vegetables all the time. Except the last week. Whenever I have tried to eat veg (ie in soup or a meal) it tastes horrible to me. As if it is tainted with damp.

I don’t know if it’s related to my fridge or freezer or something but my husband can taste or smell anything wrong with the food. Even my colleagues had a taste of the soup today and can’t see what the issue is.

Has anyone else had this before? the only time I’ve went off veg before was when I was pregnant and I’m definitely not pregnant!

Do you get migraines? My taste (and sense of smell) goes haywire when I've got a migraine brewing. Never get the visual aura, but my other senses decide to play up instead!

LoniceraJaponica · 18/10/2018 19:39

Is there a possibility that you might be pregnant?

MrTrebus · 18/10/2018 19:40

Pregnant?

Groovester · 18/10/2018 19:40

Take a test!

EspressoPatronum · 18/10/2018 19:41

I came on to ask if you could be pregnant... How unlikely is it??

TheSmallAssassin · 18/10/2018 19:43

If you're definitely not pregnant, go and get checked out by the doctor if it doesn't go away.

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 18/10/2018 19:43

I was going to suggest pregnancy too

DontLickTheCat · 18/10/2018 19:44

Sinus issues often make things taste funny for me

louderthan · 18/10/2018 19:59

I find that my tastebuds are affected when I'm due to get my period. It only seems to have happened in the last year or so though and I'm def not pregnant!

ShadowWeaver · 18/10/2018 20:02

This might sound even weirder, but I went off turnip (usually live it) when I hurt my foot. I obviously didn't connect the 2 until my foot got better and I suddenly liked turnip again. Maybe they weren't connected, but it was a hell of a coincidence.

ToadOfSadness · 18/10/2018 20:08

I had a bit of a cold last week, I also live on vegetables (and tea) and nothing tasted right.

Maybe your sinuses are a bit 'off'.

TheSheepofWallSt · 18/10/2018 20:11

I’ve had a virus for about a month (no sinus or nasal symptoms)
Just seem to be coming out the other end now- but lots, especially chicken, has tasted very wrong.

Can you still smell things? One of my family had this? She lost her sense of smell and it effected her taste - it was a virus in her thyroid. Get yours checked out?

3luckystars · 18/10/2018 20:20

If you are DEFINITELY not pregnant then maybe you are short of something? Iron or some Mineral?

Could you have a dental problem?

Acid reflux?

Jitters22 · 18/10/2018 20:23

You're not peri-menopausal are you?

I ask because I had exactly this, in regards to food tasting odd - and yes 'damp' is exactly how I recall it. Sort of musty. Affected smell also. Food and other things smelled weird including myself. I could detect this strange aroma coming off my body and became a clean freak - showering or bathing myself two or three times a day and dowsing myself in deodorant and perfume to no avail.

However, as I navigated menopause it did pass, only for other weird symptoms to come and take its place.

By coincidence, I am also a vegetarian. Maybe it's got something to do with that?

Who knows when it comes to hormones and genetics and so on.

prettygreywalls · 18/10/2018 20:33

Have you eaten pine nuts ? They can sometimes react and give you a funny taste to everything you subsequently eat or drink , I found everything tasted very bitter and all had the same taste , if it's that it does go after around 3 or 4 days ( pine nut mouth )

MoonlightMedicine · 18/10/2018 20:52

I was going to ask about pine nuts. I will NEVER eat them again after a hellish 2 weeks of everything tasting rank. They were organic bloody Waitrose ones as well.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 18/10/2018 20:55

Re: pine nuts, this is quite common and only occurs with Chinese pine nuts apparently, not Italian ones for example. They are completely different variety (DH gets this).

buscaution · 18/10/2018 21:00

I can’t taste anything the same when I am run down with a virus.

Mammylamb · 18/10/2018 21:15

Thanks everyone!

I’ve not eaten pine nuts recently; so not that

I had a period last week: so not pregnant!

I also have bad sinuses!

I don’t think I’m peri menopausal: I’m only 37; is that not a bit too young?

it is younger than average but not impossible. i am 28 and was told i am peri menopausal at the beginning of this year. however if your periods are regular then it’s most likely not that

3luckystars · 18/10/2018 21:33

Some people get periods while pregnant. If there is even a 1% chance then take a test!
