Would you say something if a restaurant undercharged you?

Went out for meal with DH & mutual friend. The bill came & they hadn't charged us for my meal. I thought cha ching & said to keep stum but friend ignored me & told the waitress. I was really miffed & abit pissed off with my friend. Would you have told them or kept quiet? It was a chain not a family run place if that makes a difference.

We eat out a fair bit. I always point out if an error has been made. I used to waitress and it can be a totally shit job and I would hat the thought of someone on minimum wage having to pay for my meal when I could perfectly well afford it, having chosen to order it.

Anyone who wouldn’t point out they had been undercharged but would complain about being overcharged is despicable.

ThatssomedeadbratCarrie · 18/10/2018 19:10

It may be a chain but the people who work there who could potentially get in trouble/lose their jobs.

starzig · 18/10/2018 19:11

Not really getting the difference between large established chains and smaller independent restaurants. Surely both deserve paid for their goods/services.

SpoonBlender · 18/10/2018 19:11

I don't generally check the bill, but I have pointed out missing things a couple of times, as well as extras that we hadn't had a couple of times. Works out even.

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 18/10/2018 19:21

I would in a restaurant, yes.

I have however, accidentally, not paid for a mattress. Bought a bed frame from a large DIY store, didn’t want the cheap mattress they were trying to flog with it. But when they brought the frame out to the car, they brought the mattress out too because that was how they were stacked in the warehouse. I quietly put it in the car and kept it as a spare until my cat pissed on it a couple of years later

FangFangFangFuries · 18/10/2018 19:34

I wonder if those PPs who wouldn't say anything if they were undercharged, thinking they've got away with a cheap meal, would have the same attitude if they're overcharged?!

Caprisunorange · 18/10/2018 19:37

“I wonder if those PPs who wouldn't say anything if they were undercharged, thinking they've got away with a cheap meal, would have the same attitude if they're overcharged?!”

Eh? Of course not! No offensive but that’s quite a daft post Halloween Grin

Henryismyfriend · 18/10/2018 19:45

I am laughing at all the self righteousness on here. Meanwhile back in the real world i would pay what they asked for ..not my fault they can't count the number of meals

Despite the amount of posters here saying they'd be honest, (not saying these posters aren't honest) my experience in hospitality supports the comment I've quoted.
I understand that you don't expect mistakes, however people are human and humans make mistakes sometimes.
Some people won't check the bill, some will scrutinise it. Up to them, and yes if I undercharge someone then it's my mistake.
I have though, been accused of ripping people off, being a thief, being a scum bag etc when I've made a genuine mistake the other way (it was a touch screen till and I left my finger on a button a split second longer than I should have and it registered 2 of one item - I didn't notice, it was a genuine mistake)
I'm lucky enough to have never worked anywhere that makes the staff make up the shortfall of a mistake is made, there's an acceptable level and as long as you're below that, it's taken for what it is - a genuine mistake.
I always check the bill and if anything is wrong I'll point it out. But I've probably had it happen to me both ways if I've not noticed.
Think it boils down to personal preference really.

Thursdaydreaming · 18/10/2018 19:47

The til wouldn't be down though. At a chain place the bill is generated by the til and printed, if it's not on the bill then the problem is it wasn't entered in to the register correctly. I'm not saying it's right but I don't see how the individual server could be blamed.

SerenDippitty · 18/10/2018 19:47

Yes I would. To not do so is dishonest.

A580Hojas · 18/10/2018 19:48

Only if it had been an excellent meal with spot on service.

FangFangFangFuries · 18/10/2018 19:50

Why daft, Caprisunorange?

If, say, you were undercharged and thought you could get away with it, then so be it - not my cup of tea - but some PPs have said they'd do it.

But if you were overcharged, then you'd be making a fuss surely?!

busybarbara · 18/10/2018 19:51

Worried things wouldn't add up at the end of the night? Do you really think they count how much mashed potato and peas they doled out over the night and stock take like a shop?? Grin

BiggerBoat1 · 18/10/2018 19:52

I did quite recently. A quite expensive steak had been left off our bill. didn't even occur to me not to.

BranstonTickle · 18/10/2018 19:54

Always. I'd never want to gain at someone else's expense (the server). I've done that job, made those mistakes and literally paid the price.

confusedmomm · 18/10/2018 19:55

If I noticed of course I would tell them.

Actually speaking of it, this morning I text my doggy daycare to tell them they mischarged me by two days - (I owe them). It's about a month after it was invoiced and paid but I just noticed.

Noboozeforme · 18/10/2018 19:55

I've never checked a bill. However, I wouldn't do it purposefully.

catlovingdoctor · 18/10/2018 19:57

God, entitled people like you are everything wrong with this country!

Caprisunorange · 18/10/2018 20:01

FangFangFang of course you’d make a fuss if overcharged Hmm just because you wouldn’t tell a restaurant that they’d undercharged doesn’t mean you happily pay when it goes the other wayv

RedPandaMama · 18/10/2018 20:01

A few years ago when I was a student I went out with 2 friends for tea. It was a new pub and we only realised once we got there and had ordered drinks it was expensive, way more than we expected (like £15ish for a burger, £6 for a dessert 8 years ago). Our bill should have been approx £80 for the three of us. It came and was only £45. We paid it and left without saying anything. I still feel guilty to this day for doing it.

Now I would say something.

Splurge77 · 18/10/2018 20:04

Would and have flagged errors. I think it’s the right thing to do.

busybarbara · 18/10/2018 20:05

I bet if Sky accidentally gave any of you mother Theresa types a free month by accident you wouldn't be ringing them up to query it Wink

FangFangFangFuries · 18/10/2018 20:06

Caprisunorange, the point is, I would do it either way.

Say the restaurant forgot that we'd had 3 bottles of wine instead of 2. We'd say "you forgot the third bottle, so please adjust the bill (upwards) because we need to pay more".

Caprisunorange · 18/10/2018 20:08

But it’s not about what you’d do, you were asking about what those who would keep schtum would do if over charged

Ragwort · 18/10/2018 20:10

I am more surprised at the number of people who say 'they never check the bill' Hmm. That sounds odd to me, mistakes can happen both over and under charging & I would always want to check my bill.
