Would you say something if a restaurant undercharged you?

Went out for meal with DH & mutual friend. The bill came & they hadn't charged us for my meal. I thought cha ching & said to keep stum but friend ignored me & told the waitress. I was really miffed & abit pissed off with my friend. Would you have told them or kept quiet? It was a chain not a family run place if that makes a difference.

I would always say something if I noticed, (after a couple of glasses of wine I’ve been known to just throw my credit card at the bill without taking a closer look). Even if it’s a big chain where they might not miss the money, I imagine the waiter/waitress could get into trouble when things don’t match up at the end of the night.

ilovesooty · 18/10/2018 17:23

Of course I would - and in fact did twice while I was on holiday recently. Your attitude is really unpleasant.

Newjobnewstart · 18/10/2018 17:23

Unless the food and service was rubbish i would have told them. Ij fact scrub that i woukd have told them anyway as im not a thief

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 18/10/2018 17:25

Yes. Absolutely. You would say something if they overcharged you so the principle is the same.

Seniorcitizen1 · 18/10/2018 17:29

Of course I’d tell - not to do is tantamount to theft. I bet you would say something if they overcharged?

Screamqueenz · 18/10/2018 17:30

Yes, and it happens quite a lot.

Hedgehogblues · 18/10/2018 17:32

yes. I'd worry the person serving me would get into trouble otherwise

SueDunome · 18/10/2018 17:36

When we were on holiday, we received a bill with no desserts on, despite us all having ordered and eaten them. Of course we told them and still left a generous tip.

GreenLantern53 · 18/10/2018 17:40

these comments! ofcourse I wouldnt, doubt any one in the REAL world would either 😂

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 18/10/2018 17:40

No, but then I’m a morality free zone.

kmc1111 · 18/10/2018 17:41

The only time I wouldn’t bring it up is if it was a small amount like a pound or two. For that I wouldn’t go over the menu and the bill trying to figure out what I’d been undercharged for. I would tip/tip extra instead.

I’d never try and get away with not paying for a whole meal. Decent chance the waiter/waitress would end up paying for it themselves to avoid getting in trouble over things not adding up.

MimpiDreams · 18/10/2018 17:41

I would have told them because I'm not a thief.

RibbonAurora · 18/10/2018 17:42

Reverse?
I wouldn’t be friends for long with someone with a dishonest nature and especially not one who tried to make me an active participant in their petty theft.

batshitbetty · 18/10/2018 17:42

If I course I would, and I have in the past (eg when a restaurant missed a bottle of wine off the bill) it would be theft otherwise. Also spare a thought for the poor server who may get into trouble

letsgetreadytosamba · 18/10/2018 17:43

Reverse Halloween Biscuit

I would say something.

A0001 · 18/10/2018 17:44

Yes, and I have done this in the past - chain or not.

It’s called Integrity...

confusedandemployed · 18/10/2018 17:46

What @GreenLantern53 said

Biancadelriosback · 18/10/2018 17:47

I would. Years working as a waitress and if the till was down it came out of our tips/wage. If it was down on our shift more than three times we would be in for a disciplinary. This was in a big chain restaurant.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/10/2018 17:47

I would definitely say something. I would feel horribly guilty if I’d had something I should have paid for.

buscaution · 18/10/2018 17:48

Years ago i worked as a waitress. Chain restaurant was more likely to take errors out of wages than independents tbh. But for that reason alone, if I spot a mistake I always let them know. Imagine if the person was dependent on their whole wage and they had to pay for your meal Hmm

JacquesHammer · 18/10/2018 17:51

Yes of course.

You consumed the food, you pay for it.

Joinourclub · 18/10/2018 17:54

I’d say something because I’m not a thief. Those saying that they wouldn’t say something, would they also just walk out if it was busy and nobody was looking?

PavlovianLunge · 18/10/2018 17:54

I would and have. One time, the server forget to charge us for a bottle of wine; I had paid the bill without checking it properly, but as we left, I realised that the bill was too low, so we went back and paid the different.

Basically, you should pay for what you’ve had, but also some restaurants make staff cover uncharged or undercharged items. That’s not right.

Housingcraze · 18/10/2018 17:54

Off the topic
How do you get biscuits with hats on 😂😂

NonaGrey · 18/10/2018 17:55

of course I wouldnt, doubt any one in the REAL world would either

Why would you assume Green that just because that’s what you and your friends and family would do that it’s necessarily what everyone would do.

The very OP illustrates that some people at least are honest.

I’d have told the waitress too OP. I wouldn’t have wanted her to potentially have to cover my meal out of her wage.

It’s theft and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a chain or not.
