Was shopping earlier with my 7m old. Going around the supermarket, she was in her pram and I was chatting away to her quietly, you know the 'oh shall we have chicken for dinner' or mustn't forget to get something for daddys lunch tomorrow etc. She was smiling away and chatting her 'talk' back. Anyway as every so I passed the same woman who looked at me weird, thought maybe I had something on my face lol, Thought nothing more of it.
Got to the till and she was behind me, thenshe said 'excuse me' I replied 'hi' she said 'why on Earth do you talk to such a young child, its not like they understand ?' in quite a sneery tone.
I said ' because that's how they learn '
She replied ' well of you say so'!
Me. I don't 'say so' I know so...and carried on emptying my basket

Maybe I shouldn't of been sarcastic at the end but she was very rude and made it look like I was being odd. I wasn't eden chatting loudly or anything just general chat to my daughter

Not only did I constantly talk to my late Ddog I did his voice back to me, he sounded remarkably like Alan Rickman! Now he's gone I talk to myself far more than is normal Confused

I’m another cat chatterer- they love it !
Thing is if you talk to your baby it becomes a habit then when they’re older and can talk back to you it becomes a lovely conversation where they want to tell you about their day or their friends or whatever

How stupid of this woman to think that you shouldn’t talk to your baby

Op you carry on chatting away

But all the advice says to talk to your child, play music etc even whilst he or she is still in the womb! Even when I was a nanny, I used to walk round the room and show the baby items and tell her what they were in two languages.

I talk to my dogs all the time. One of them talks back, the others just sit and respond to certain words or try to bring me my own feet as ‘gifts’.

Loving the early diagnosis of Asperger from a pp, absolutely inspired! Grin

What a dick! (Her not you!)

Of course you talk to kids. And it's delightful when they can't answer back (disclaimer- I may be a bit sick of arguing teens right now Wink)

Some people are just horrible Thanks

I used to feel so strange talking to my newborn and couldn't get why people did it after about 8 weeks I got why and it became second nature, I always spoke to my DD in proper sentences and clearly. She's been talking since 18 months very clear she's now 3. And her speech is amazing

Ignore the crazy bat! I'd be grinning like a bafoon at you, something like thisGrin, you'll have the last laugh anyway, I imagine you'll have the same sort of relationship as as a boy and his mum who used to live down the road from me, they'd walk past talking about space, religion, and all sorts, he understood everything they talked about he knew more than me, he was only 4 years old!!! I talk to my 'girls' the chickens, they understand me and 'cluck' back....

Ignore her, none of her business if your talking to you child, when on the rare occasion I do see people doing this I think its rather sweet

LimitIsUp · 21/10/2018 12:59

Strange lady.

I like the calm, no nonsense way that you politely but firmly put her straight

SeaToSki · 21/10/2018 13:05

I chatted to my dc all the time when they were little. Infact I had a laugh at myself when they were all down for a nap and I was unloading the dishwasher and counting the plates into the cupboard 1,2,3 out loud. Another one was driving without them in the car with the nursery rhymes still playing!
