AIBU to buy snobby car?

I know I'm going to get absolutely flogged for posting this, but I genuinely want your opinions (please be gentle!). Here is my first world problem....

AIBU to buy a second hand (3 years old) Audi or Range Rover because I am a snob and like nice cars or should I buy a brand new Kia or Vauxhall?

Currently have a 3 year old Audi Q5 which I bought new, but I now need more seats so am after a 7 seater.

What would you do? AIBU to buy a second hand car when I could buy a new one, just not a flash one?

Confused

I’d buy quality over new.

ShatnersBassoon · 18/10/2018 07:29

Don't buy a brand new car. Always go for a slightly older but better car. That's not snobby, unless you don't understand the quality differences between a Kia and an Audi and are buying for the badge alone.

kaytee87 · 18/10/2018 07:29

Why are they snobby cars?

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 18/10/2018 07:30

I'd get the best you can afford. That could easily be a second hand better make rather than a new, not so good one.

greendale17 · 18/10/2018 07:31

Could you go from driving an Audi to a budget car?

LillyPillly · 18/10/2018 07:32

I don't really know much about cars so I just assumed buying a new car was a better option, but am very happy to hear you say its better to buy an older, quality car! Ive only ever had Audis and they have been great and very reliable to think I'll go the Q7 :)

I agree with PP, DH won't buy french for this reason. Our cars have always been Japanese or German.

WhenIWasAYoungWarthog · 18/10/2018 07:32

I’d always go for a slightly second hand car, about a year old. It’s still pretty new but doesn’t depreciate as much as a brand new car. I don’t think I’d ever drive a Range Rover or an Audi as generally people who drive those cars are massive bellends.

NonaGrey · 18/10/2018 07:33

A “snobby” car? They’re just cars.

Buy what you like, it’s your money.

LillyPillly · 18/10/2018 07:33

kaytee I'm in Australia so European cars are considered pretty snobby over here because they are much more expensive than they are in the UK unfortunately !

Make sure you actually buy a proper 2nd hand one in good nick though, my DP has an audi TT and theres always something breaking down in it!

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 18/10/2018 07:34

Oh no I would definitely choose a slightly older naice car over a budget car if I could afford it.

hippipotamiwantstoloseapound · 18/10/2018 07:38

Buy the used car of your choice! They are not snobby cars - they are nice cars!

Bloomburger · 18/10/2018 07:38

I wouldn't buy a Vauxhall or Kia as people who drive those are normally fat wastes of space who are lazy and haven't studied enough to get a decent job and buy a decent car!

Only joking.

Apparently you can be offensive on the basis of what sort of cars others drive.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 18/10/2018 07:38

I'm planning on a second hand range rover for my next car. Currently have a Vauxhall, which is shit.
I'm not remotely snobby.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 18/10/2018 07:39

Nor am I a bellend. Hmm

Thelastredwinegum · 18/10/2018 07:43

Id do the same OP, the resale value of the older "better" car should be better in the future, and they're generally nicer places to be sat in.
We have a brand new Kia at work as a pool car and the interior feels very flimsy.

lastqueenofscotland · 18/10/2018 07:44

Get an Audi not a Range Rover. They cost a horrendous amount to run and aren’t fantastically reliable

Bluntness100 · 18/10/2018 07:47

I'd never buy a car new, most folks in the industry wouldn't, unless heavily discounted. You lose a fortune just driving off the forecourt.

A quality used car is a much better investment.

I've no idea what you mean by snobby though.

Lostin3dspace · 18/10/2018 07:52

I misread the title as ‘snobby cat’ and wondered what that was

Disappointed now

Pinkyyy · 18/10/2018 07:53

I'd absolutely go for a better car over a newer one. Have you looked into a BMW? I find them so much nicer to driver than an Audi and nicer inside too, but that's personal preference of course

borntobequiet · 18/10/2018 07:53

Buy a car you like and can afford.

blueskiesandforests · 18/10/2018 07:54

Check the length of warranty, service intervals, and fuel consumption and read reviews to guage reliability see which will be the better investment.

A person can be snobbish about cars but I don't think a metal object can be snobby ...

You can buy what you like obviously, but I'd dispute that a 3 year old Audi or Rangerover is genuinely a better investment than a new car with a 7 year warranty and in the case of the Rangerover (not sure about the Audi) lower running costs.

You can buy what you want him obviously, ultimately nobody else really cares.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/10/2018 07:55

I'd be careful about buying a second hand expensive car like an Audi or a Range Rover as just about everything about them costs more to run/fix, so it's not just initial purchase price/depreciation to consider.

This may be even more important to you being in Australia. If European cars are expensive to buy, I'd expect that parts etc are also expensive.

We have some great PCP deals in the UK that work out only slightly more expensive than nearly new once repairs have been taken into account, and much less hassle and no worries about unexpected costs or inconvenience of the car being off the road - if you buy a nearly new car and something expensive goes wrong, it can be much more expensive than a car under warranty.

Do you have Asian brand cars with 7 year warranties over there? I'd probably get one of those nearly new if they are available in 7 seaters. Unless you are minted expensive cars are such a huge money drain.

tumericmasala · 18/10/2018 07:55

See my thread on this - similar sort of idea and gives you some tips.

Deffo go 3 years old and a good brand.

We're looking at Volvo
