AIBU to buy snobby car?

I know I'm going to get absolutely flogged for posting this, but I genuinely want your opinions (please be gentle!). Here is my first world problem....

AIBU to buy a second hand (3 years old) Audi or Range Rover because I am a snob and like nice cars or should I buy a brand new Kia or Vauxhall?

Currently have a 3 year old Audi Q5 which I bought new, but I now need more seats so am after a 7 seater.

What would you do? AIBU to buy a second hand car when I could buy a new one, just not a flash one?

Confused

People often use the need for 7 seats as a reason to buy an SUV. I'd just like to point out that there is such a thing as a 7 seat Prius.

NonaGrey · 18/10/2018 08:30

Beg your pardon. I stand corrected. My RR doesn't

An extra row of seats is an option in the RR Sport Noego.

I’m not even sure how I know that Grin

QueenoftheNights · 18/10/2018 08:32

I think you have a very odd attitude to call Audis or RR 'snobby' cars.

I thought you were coming along to say you wanted to buy an Aston!

When I've bought cars I've done a lot of research on reliability and safety. I'v e never bought new as it's a waste of money- devalue the minute you drive them off the forecourt.

My choice has always been German models so either VW, BMW or Audi.

Same for home appliances!

noego · 18/10/2018 08:33

Don't like to RR sport. The turbo is suspect and likely to blow. £7k to repair.

Longdistance · 18/10/2018 08:34

When we lived in Oz the price comparison between a brand new car, and a second hand one want much different tbh. We ended up buying brand new.
I’m now back in the UK, I drive a brand new Mercedes. I’m not snobby.
Agree with op, don’t buy a RR. Very unreliable money pit.

TimIsHavingABadDay · 18/10/2018 08:38

There isn't anything snobby about Audis, my 19 year old son got a brand new A one last year and it smells like teenage ball bags and rotten mcdonalds. Its also a shitty spec- for the same price he could have had an amazing all singing all dancing mid size ford instead of a pokey cubby hole.

BUT for the same price as an A one I have a french 7 seater. Its shit. I bought it brand new and it's just awful. Feels plasticky, the auto gear box is diabolical and its always in for repairs. Next year, i'm going for a 7 seater BMW. Its a smidge more expensive but I much prefer it.

Just go with what you actually want if you can afford it. Maybe save a bit longer and buy a 6 month old range rover or audi?

Treacletoots · 18/10/2018 08:39

Buy what you want OP. Although I don't agree with anyone saying don't buy new.

Yes, the car loses value when you drive it off the forecourt yada yada.. but who in their minds thinks a car is an investment ?!?

If you don't care about owning it outright have a look around at new PCP deals on your Audi's and you may just find they're surprisingly affordable. Couple it with using carwow to negotiate a better price. I managed to get a brand new Jeep for under £230 a month with a very small you deposit. It's under warranty for the entire time I will own it and hopefully after 3 years I'll just switch to another car.

No hassle, no repair bills, no worries.

Lalliella · 18/10/2018 08:40

Umm, buy whatever car you want. Who cares? However, if you buy a “snobby” car check that the indicators work because they’ve probably never been used!

dangermouseisace · 18/10/2018 08:41

I wouldn't buy a vauxhall just because my father swears by them. His are always in the garage through because there is always something wrong with it.

I'd just go for something fuel efficient, reliable and reasonable to insure TBH, and not worry about the branding.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 18/10/2018 08:44

I'd go for a Kia with it's 7 year warranty to be honest (and I'm giving serious consideration to trading in my Skoda for a Kia soon).

Dollymixture22 · 18/10/2018 08:47

I just bought a second hand car for the first time ever. Saved a fortune - thousands of pounds. Feel quite smug actually

Hercy · 18/10/2018 08:52

I wouldn't go for a Q7 purely because they are so bloody huge they can be a nightmare to drive. Your roads, parking spaces etc in OZ may be a bit more generous, but in London, the size of the Q7 makes it a pain. My friend got hers wedged/stuck going up the spiral entry of a multi storey car park😂

Ohheyyy · 18/10/2018 09:00

I have a 3 year old Audi Q5 and absolutely love it. So nice to drive and the boot space is great as I can practically throw my buggy in without thinking or needing to do some weird Tetris manoeuvre.

I get the standard and unoriginal comments about how Audi drivers can't drive, don't indicate etc but I don't care.

hendricksy · 18/10/2018 09:01

I have a top of the range Kia Sportage and chose it over the Audi because the comparative model was £35k
Ore . I'd rather have the top of the range than the bottom plus the Kia have way more room inside than the Audi's .. we measured leg pitch on tall dd !!
But if you can afford it but what you want 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️... the only thing I'd be worried about is people get rid of 3 year old cars because the warranty is out and it may cost you a lot .

Chesterfieldsofa · 18/10/2018 09:07

Wouldn't touch a second hand range rover - not very reliable and very expensive to repair.

SD1978 · 18/10/2018 09:07

Don't think I've ever heard the word snobby used in Melbourne to describe a car. Toorak tractor, yes. But snobby is a British word. Loads of people drive Audi's and range rovers, even in my poor wee suburb. Buy what you want, dont have a car so big you can't see over the steering wheel, and don't drive like a knob. Can't imagine folk will have much of an opinion.

whatnametouse · 18/10/2018 09:10

We had a Q7 and traded it in when the turbo went for a Range Rover

Think the Q7 is a better drive than the RR. 7 seats are ok but really only for kids in the back row.

But the next 4x4 we will get will be a Tesla unless a better electric one is out by then (need a 4x4 where we live as normal cars can’t get up the hill to our house during winter)

LARLARLAND · 18/10/2018 09:14

I would go for a XC90. It has all the space and luxury you want but somehow Volvos don’t have the same negative stereotypes as Audi and RR.

EstuaryBird · 18/10/2018 09:16

Always go with quality. I bought a 3 year old Merc just over a year ago, at the same time my friend bought a brand new Kia...she has had endless problems and I've had none.

Merc is roomy, solid and comfortable and will last for years. Not snobby (although I am very proud of it!) - it's the sensible choice.

HildaZelda · 18/10/2018 09:23

@Lalliella, Hmm yawn. I drive a BMW. My first car at 19 was a Nissan Micra. I've been perfectly well able to use the indicators in both.

LARLARLAND · 18/10/2018 09:31

I am surprised that the KiA has so many problems. I spoke to an RAC man recently and he told me the car brands he never gets called out to attend and KIA was one of them.

Avegemitesandwich · 18/10/2018 09:35

Of course Range Rovers are 'snobby cars'. That's the whole reason people buy them. If they weren't a status symbol no one would buy them because they are total pants in terms of reliability, cost of servicing, parts etc.

At least Audis, BMWs are actually fairly decent cars.

However, if you buy a “snobby” car check that the indicators work because they’ve probably never been used!

MrsGollach · 18/10/2018 09:41

2-3 year old nice car anyday. Not a Range Rover though. So many problems with them. Can't find links (don't have time at mo) www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/land_rover.html

blueskiesandforests · 18/10/2018 09:44

Larlarland I have a Kia (bought with about 100km on the clock, it had been registered for 6 months when I bought it - it was an ex demo with all the extras for very significantly under list price). I've had it for 3.5 years and it still has warranty for another 3 years.

It has (touch wood) been utterly and completely reliable so far. Not one problem.

The 7 year warranty is what attracted me to a Korean car as my previous car (also an ex display/ demo car with a couple of hundred km on the clock, but a Fiat) was fine aside from an initial one off big problem fixed under warranty for 3 years, then as soon as the 3 year warranty was over it broke down constantly and in varied and expensive ways until it was 6 years old and it wasn't financially worth while repairing it. I sold it to a dealer who towed it away to fix up...

DH had BMWs as company cars and they were horrible to drive, but they were diesel due to doing high mileage and I've heard BMW diesels are renowned for being particularly tractor like... Never had an Audi or a Range Rover because I can't see any earthly reason to pay so much over the odds for a car when there are cars which for my purposes are at least as good for a third of the price.

I car about reliability, safety and running costs. I think you just have to identify your priorities and then research those categories and find your best fit.

I read that as "snobby cat", cue visions of an Earl Grey tea-drinking cat in top hat and tails 😂 missed point of thread by a mile
