To be fucked off with the mirena coil

letscometogether · 17/10/2018 16:35

I know I’ve only had it in for two bastarding weeks, but I’ve bled continuously since then, ranging from mild light to very light. Fucking fucked off. I’ve also had mild cramps since and every time I think the bleeding has stopped, I get cramps and it’s back!!

Also, I swear my hair is greasier than before. Blegh!

I've had them for the last 16 years.

Hang in there, it does get better.

I was housebound for 3 days a month with flooding before I was asked to trial one. Wouldn't be without it now, although the one I've got now I had inserted in September and took around 4 months to settle. Never had that with the others, just unlucky I think.

WonderTweek · 17/10/2018 21:41

I had spotting for about two months after having it fitted and it’s been great since. I’ve had it for about 18 months now and haven’t had any issues apart from very occasionally my husband being able to feel the threads if he’s a bit unlucky. Apparently it feels like being poked in the bell with a tiny stick (😂) but this hardly ever happens.

During the first couple of months I really wanted it out as I was sick of the spotting but I’m glad I stuck with it now. Hope yours settles too OP!

Rachie1973 · 17/10/2018 21:46

I love mine. I’m on my 5th and it’s due for a change.

My GP gave me tablets to break the inflammation/bleed cycle with the first but never had that with later ones.

I’d not use any other type of contraception.

Amani · 17/10/2018 22:24

Nearly two weeks since I’ve had it put in too and pelvic pain on the left hand side. Hurts to stand, sit, lie down...
Never felt so bad. Going to ask to have it out at gp tomorrow...

Hotfootit · 17/10/2018 23:00

I had chronic thrush for the 3 months I had a Mirena coil. It finally cleared 2 months after the bloody thing was taken out. I haven’t had thrush since (it’s 11.5 years since it was removed).
And in case anyone’s wondering, if only had thrush twice in the 35 years before the coil, one of which was the week I got pregnant with DC1!
That said, lots of my friends have it and swear by it - but it really didn’t suit me. Sorry!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 17/10/2018 23:12

A Mirena was recommended by my GP instead of surgery for fibroids. I was flooding severely enough that I couldn't leave the house on several days every cycle.

Putting it in was excruciating. I had to have pain killing injections in my cervix. But once it was in I never had a period again. I was told nearly all the women working in the practice had a Mirena. It's been a real blessing to me.

ScienceIsTruth · 17/10/2018 23:15

YANBU. I hate mine too.

I've had mine for 3 years and still bleeding almost continually, although it's lighter than it was (no more flooding!).

MumW · 17/10/2018 23:26

I had one for heavy bleeding due to fibroids. The first one was brilliant but it fell out at some point. Confused

Second one has been useless. Still bleeding almost every day after more than 6 months.

Now been told hysterectomy is the solution but I'm a bit Hmm about it.

As for pain with insertion, take the all the strongest pain killers you have about an hour before. Did this for a hysteroscopy and it was fine, for me anyway.
(I took naproxen and maximum dose of codiene)

ScienceIsTruth · 17/10/2018 23:26

Also, I have no libido at all and severe pain on rhs when having sex (I have endometriosis). Think my endo is back with a vengeance. I'm going to have it out. They had to put me under to insert it as although I'm normally fine with stuff like that, the pain was unbearable, and I passed out when they tried to do it whilst I was awake. Before it was inserted, I bled/flooded heavily for 7+months non stop, and I bled a lot for the first year. I've alsio gained weight.

I want it removed.

LeeBird · 17/10/2018 23:31

Had one fitted mid-April. Bled lightly for 4 months! Reason for Mirena was to stop v heavy periods, which worked. Now, 6 months later, I am really happy. OP, try to persevere, it does get better.

Jellyjumpers · 17/10/2018 23:33

Had one fitted for endometriosis in surgery bled for the first couple of months and then only had spotting. Now having another period and in so much pain from endometriosis. Not sure where this period has come from and hating the unpredictability. At least with periods i could plan.

buscaution · 17/10/2018 23:36

Two weeks light bleeding is nothing. I bled continuously for 2 years before I had my mirena. It took 3 months to settle but after that I never saw another spot of blood. Been in 4 years now. Absolute life changer.

Give it time.

RoobyRoobyRooby · 18/10/2018 01:44

It was the worst thing I did. I suffered through two years of daily bleeding, hair falling out, significant weight gain, mood swings, terrible skin, fatigue - which I blamed on other conditions I had - but then realised it was the Mirena. As soon as it was out the daily bleeding stopped, I went back to completely regular periods and my hair and skin improved. Unfortunately the weight has been harder to lose.

If you don’t feel happy with it. Get it out.

RoobyRoobyRooby · 18/10/2018 01:46

I should add that mine went in because I was having flooding periods that were irregular. The mirena didn’t help at all.

letscometogether · 18/10/2018 01:54

Thanks everyone for your replies. So sorry to those who had an awful time with it, I can't believe the coil could be so nasty.

Like a lot of you the main reason is due to heavy periods. Let's just say the floodgates open. I thought this would be the solution but starting to think not.

Will make a gp appointment Friday see if there's anything they can give me, if not I've set a reminder in 2 months that if I'm still bleeding to have the damn fucker out!!!

For all those having prolonged bleeding, check out getting a uterine ablation.

HoppingPavlova · 18/10/2018 08:02

I’m on my third. Initially I bled straight for 6 weeks then it tapered off then ...........nothing. No period since. So no period for well over 10 years now, given my age I have probably naturally stopped anyway now but I’m certainly not keen to find out.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 18/10/2018 08:10

I think mine has been in for about three years. I did initially have 6 months of heavy continuous bleeding but then it settled and was OK.

Now back to continuous bleeding, but quite light unless I’ve been active. Maybe I need a new one? I’ve got an ectropion too which might be complicating things.

Don’t feel much like sex as it triggers heavier bleeding and a day of pain.

gingercat02 · 18/10/2018 08:14

I love mine OP. I have never had any bleeding. A little spotting with the first one. Nothing at all with this one. They obviously don't work for some people and unfortunately there's no way of telling until you try it.

PurpleWithRed · 18/10/2018 08:15

The first 6 weeks I had mine I nearly had it removed. Then suddenly it all came together. That was in 1994, and I have had Mirenas ever since, right to my menopause, and absolutely loved them. I'd say give it a few more weeks for a fair trial, if it works for you it is DEFINITELY worth the investment now.

No periods since 1994. Thank you, medical science Grin, and DH thanks you too.

roses2 · 18/10/2018 08:22

I’ve had mine for two years. I still have monthly periods but quite light and only need a liner for two days.

buscaution · 18/10/2018 08:23

Will make a gp appointment Friday see if there's anything they can give me

Please don't do this. You will be wasting a valuable NHS appointment. Your coil is not doing anything remotely abnormal.

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 18/10/2018 08:24

I had mine in for 10 months and had it removed in July, I have never been so relieved as when they (eventually) whipped it out. I say eventually because the consultant said it would be a quick five mins before his surgery began...in reality it was over an hour of prodding and rummaging, before talk of being sent to theatre, before they eventually located it to where it had migrated.

As side effects go, it just didn't suit me. No bleeding at all from insertion, just cramps every month. Insertion was horrific, but I haven't had a vaginal birth. I was incredibly bloated, moody, had awful skin, back pain, painful breasts and couldn't wait to have it removed.

Unfortunately I did also suffer the crash after removal. I was depressed, crying, rages and almost left my husband Confused my hormones were all over the place.
I'm fine now though Grin

Charlottesshoezzzz · 18/10/2018 08:26

OP I had similar symptoms for a couple of months after I had mine fitted. Had it in almost 2 years now & it's been bliss. I had it due to excruciating painful periods that were ruining my life, never looked back really. Bear with it & give it more time as I wanted mine taking out during the first few months but I'm glad I didn't!

hippospot · 18/10/2018 08:27

I had it out after a month.

Bled for the whole month - heavier than spotting, it was like a month-long period! By the end I was worried about anaemia.

But the main reason I wanted rid were the side effects: sore breasts, weight gain, low mood and zero libido. To be honest I suspected I would react badly as I'm highly sensitive to progesterone, but I wanted to at least give it a try.

Seems to suit some people really well but not me!
