Vegetarian at work buys chicken pasta but picks the chicken out??

She claims she's a vegetarian for moral reasons but still BUYS the chicken pasta at work, but picks it out. I've suggested to her that she's still funding the animals death and that if she likes the chicken, she may as well have eaten that.. probably fairer to the chicken that died. She looked disgusted at me and apparently I don't understand vegetarianism and that she physically can't bring her self to eat "the poor animal that should never have been food". I fully understand why vegetarians have that view, I do. However, surely you don't then BUY chicken??

I know this is is pointless

OP posts:

" Either you care about animals being killed or you don’t, surely?"

I used to get a lot of this from meat eaters when I was vegetarian. They used to call me a hypocrite for being a vegetarian and not a vegan.
To me that's a bit like telling someone they shouldn't recycle unless they're going to live in a 100% sustainable home. You do what you can.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 07:09

"About deliberate, planned wastage of food? No she shouldn't."

Oh come on. You sometimes have to buy food where you don't like every single ingredient.

TAMS71 · 17/10/2018 07:10

I can only think that she doesn't like the taste of meat so became vegetarian that way and has then started to have thoughts of the moral side.

reallyanotherone · 17/10/2018 07:13

have several friends who describe themselves as vegetarian, but they eat fish

Subway are also of the opinion that vegetarians eat fish. I have had to stop eating there as I get into an argument every time. They reluctantly ask if i want them to change their gloves as they’ve been handling tuna* as “some vegetarians” don’t eat fish. If I point out fish isn’t vegetarian, I get an argument. Twitter research shows that this seems to be Subway’s stance- tuna is vegetarian.

*Then I realised about the double dipping when they make up the sandwiches- handful of tuna, hand full of cheese, cucumber, lettuce. Then next customer and the me gloves go into the chicken, meatballs, back into the cucumber..

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 07:16

"Tbf to some ‘vegetarians’ like this, it might be that they want to reduce rather than eliminate meat, but if they don’t say they’re vegetarian someone will make them eat meat when they don’t want to. Like going to someone’s house for a meal, if they say they’re veggie, nobody is going to serve them a slab of meat."

Exactly. Sometimes it's too complicated to explain what you actually eat so easier to say vegetarian. Or sometimes I say flexitarian.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 07:19

"I’m a vegetarian myself. At work I make sure anything I eat is vegetarian. My coworkers know of my dietary preferences and requirements as well.
Whenever I’m baking meat"

So a vegetarian who cooks meat (and presumably buys it). How is this any better than what OP's colleague does?

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 07:24

"I am vegetarian and I have, on occasion, had meals where I have picked the meat out - vegetable soup with lumps of ham in, or salad with tuna sprinkled on it

Then you’re not a vegetarian."

There are situations when this kind of thing is the only food available to vegetarians.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 07:30

"It's not really impacting the OP.

It does though. It's wasteful."

This thread's not really about wasting food in general though is it. That would be a different thread.

MaggieAndHopey · 17/10/2018 07:39

OH MY GOD DOES IT REALLY MATTER.

7 pages about what some woman at work eats.

tictac86 · 17/10/2018 07:40

Its her choice not a problem to anyone else so leave her be

sashh · 17/10/2018 07:44

That chicken has died a probable terrible death for a person to eat to nourish themselves, but not her she is making it suffer for no reason whatsoever, just to bin it. She is Bat Shit Crazy!!!

I'm a corpse cruncher but I will add, that chicken would not have even been hatched if people didn't buy chicken.

I know it's common amongst people with eating disorders to claim they are vegi/vegan to avoid eating .

Or attention seeking.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/10/2018 07:44

Anyone who does this is not vegetarian.

They are lying to themselves and those around them if they describe themselves as vegetarian.

unexpectedtwist · 17/10/2018 07:50

That's rank!

I'm a vegan and I certainly don't buy cheese sandwiches and pick it out- what a bizarre woman

tumericmasala · 17/10/2018 07:56

That's ridiculous I was veggie for 20 years and would never have done that!!

On another note my mum would cook a chicken on bone curry so you can imagine the sauce is sooo tasty (I know this now as I broke my vegetarianism 8 years ago) they would try to convince me it was ok to have the sauce. It wasn't!! It has chicken juices in it. Nope never right your work colleague is deluded and in reality is a meat eater.

Gwenhwyfar · 17/10/2018 08:04

"I know it's common amongst people with eating disorders to claim they are vegi/vegan to avoid eating . "

Yes, but unlikely in this case isn't it. If by eating disorder you mean anorexia as pasta has more calories than chicken. Those people would presumably avoid the whole meal and say they'll eat at home later or something.

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 17/10/2018 08:07

Oh come on. You sometimes have to buy food where you don't like every single ingredient.

What, and you think it's a realistic possibility this is the only meal available anywhere near OPs work, on multiple occasions, and she also can't possibly bring her own food in to avoid this sustained and planned wastage? Give over.

IAmNotAWitch · 17/10/2018 08:11

OP, some people are just fucking stupid.

There is nothing you can do about it, don't try to understand them. Just nod and smile and back away slowly.

Makes no sense. I’m vegan and she’s funding the killing of the chickens, so that’s not ethical. Plus there are 100s of actually vegetarian products she could buy!

Xenia · 17/10/2018 08:39

Most of us are not perfect. We just need to give each other a break and not point out things like this.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone etc....

We had a rather...well fat... male old partner where I used to work and his doctor put him on a diet and he used to take the lovely work sandwiches in meetings and eat the middles and leave all the bread.

ohello · 17/10/2018 08:42

She was probably happily eating the chicken until you came along and saw her!

Jackietheduck · 17/10/2018 08:43

I have to raise my eyebrows at the people who claim to be vegetarian and then complain that they don’t want people policing their diet. The majority of these ‘vegetarians’ are not vegetarians. They do t want to eat the flesh of an animal but eat vegetable soup made from chicken stock, buying leather products, eating jelly sweets and so forth. None of these people are vegetarians. They should never utter the words and just choose whatever they want to eat. Then other people would t care what they claimed to be. People only care when these so called vegetarians voice their ‘beliefs’ when it is very obviously a pick and mix!

ohello · 17/10/2018 08:51

Or maybe... If she was sitting there eating pasta and veg, then there's no way to tell that "she's a vegetarian" and she can't get any woke points if nobody can tell she's a vegetarian.

So to get the woke points, she must buy a chicken, murder it, and then cry over it's dead body "because look at me I'm a vegetarian".

Kids today are way too focused on performing for their social media contagion club.
