Vegetarian at work buys chicken pasta but picks the chicken out??

rhysella · 16/10/2018 11:58

She claims she's a vegetarian for moral reasons but still BUYS the chicken pasta at work, but picks it out. I've suggested to her that she's still funding the animals death and that if she likes the chicken, she may as well have eaten that.. probably fairer to the chicken that died. She looked disgusted at me and apparently I don't understand vegetarianism and that she physically can't bring her self to eat "the poor animal that should never have been food". I fully understand why vegetarians have that view, I do. However, surely you don't then BUY chicken??

I know this is is pointless

NameChangedAgain18 · 16/10/2018 12:40

Actually, are you sure she's not trolling you? It sounds quite unbelievable that someone could be this stupid.

Biancadelriosback · 16/10/2018 12:42

If you kill an animal it should be for a reason. Either food, self defense etc. If you kill an animal and throw its body away then it's death is meaningless and pointless.
I would just respond and tell her that clearly she doesn't understand vegetarianism and leave it at that. I would guess she is the type to argue black is white. Bet she has a cheeky kebab on a night out too

QueSera · 16/10/2018 12:43

She's a fuckwit.

That sums it up.

FrankIncensed · 16/10/2018 12:44

Is this an ongoing thing or just a one off? If the former she is an idiot for all reasons stated above.

Also this is one of those threads where I think no one could possibly disagree with the OP, but there are always 1 or 2 spoiling for an argument!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 16/10/2018 12:51

Tbh it’s contaminated everything else

SugarCoatIt · 16/10/2018 12:51

Bizarre, think the whole concept is lost on her

IWriteCode · 16/10/2018 12:53

That's not only not vegetarian but wasteful.

DearMrDilkington · 16/10/2018 12:56

but when she's flicking the chicken in the bin right in front of me and saying "god poor thing" and then tucking right into the pasta

Grin that's so strange.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 16/10/2018 12:57

She's NOT a vegetarian. End of.

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 16/10/2018 13:02

I wouldn’t be happy doing that as a vegetarian myself but as you apparently aren’t one I think you should get off your high horse about it.

About deliberate, planned wastage of food? No she shouldn't.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 16/10/2018 13:05

Likely cooked in chicken stock & stirred through... so removing the meat will do fuck all and that is not a veggie meal.

And the poor chicken died in vain!!

Stonebake · 16/10/2018 13:05

That’s not vegetarian and she is hilarious for saying you don’t understand vegetarianism Confused.

IamDrWho · 16/10/2018 13:07

Definitely strange - but not really any of your business?

Stonebake · 16/10/2018 13:09

I think food waste, especially meat kind of is everyone’s business. Not saying the ‘vegetarian’ should be run out of town for it, but I would rather she knew she wasn’t helping anyone, including the animals or planet, by blatantly wasting meat.

MsLexic · 16/10/2018 13:10

That's insane. The chicken has died for her and also oozed all over her pasta. She is no vegetarian. She is an attention seeking pratt.

PersonaNonGarter · 16/10/2018 13:11

Well, tbf, she is completely entitled to decide the limits and boundaries of her own vegetarianism.

Not sure why everyone has decided she’s a fuckwit. She doesn’t want to eat the chicken, she doesn’t need to eat the chicken. Not very joined-up but why does that matter?

C8H10N4O2 · 16/10/2018 13:14

People on MN meet the strangest "vegetarians", not sure why this one merits a name change.

In a life time of vegetarianism I've yet to meet one who chooses to buy food with meat in and throws it away "because of the poor animals" or any of the other weird concepts I see here. The nearest I've come across is fish eaters who describe themselves as vegetarian (they are not).

Of course no group has the exclusive monopoly on the terminally stupid.

OutPinked · 16/10/2018 13:14

I have done this before with chicken tikka masalas, I confess. I love the sauce and the rice but am not a meat eater. I used to be a big moral veggie and even a vegan at one stage, never would’ve done it then but as someone who just isn’t that into meat it’s not a big deal. I always picked the ham off pizza as a child too, never liked the taste.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 16/10/2018 13:20

When I was at school my friend became vegetarian. She's buy a sausage roll at lunch, eat the pastry, and give me the sausage.

That was many years ago, I don't think vegetarians were catered for very well, it was probably the only option. But it used to amuse me.

BeefTomato · 16/10/2018 13:21

Yes she's an idiot, but as you're somebody who actually eats meat I don't see what your objection is?

showmethemonkey · 16/10/2018 13:23

Is there not a vegetarian option for her?

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 16/10/2018 13:24

I think people have decided she's a fuckwit because in a mixed dish, she's still going to be consuming some of the animal anyway. And she's contributing, by her purchase, to a trade she apparently doesn't agree with.

I kind of get deciding you'll eat stock and sauce but no slabs of meat, although at that point it's a food preference rather than a decision made based on your views of animal welfare. No different to how I feel about mushrooms. But deliberately spending money on a practice you don't agree with, causing it to be more widespread than it would otherwise be, there isn't really a way to describe it that doesn't include the word fuckwit.

ShartGoblin · 16/10/2018 13:26

She's a moron. There is no point whatsoever in abstaining from meat if you're still contributing to the supply and demand. It's annoying that most of the nice pasta options come with chicken so I guess that's why she does it but you're absolutely correct that she might as well eat the chicken.

It's disgusting that she thinks throwing dead animal in the bin is doing anything to help them.

EK36 · 16/10/2018 13:28

I admire vegetarians and vegans for their strong sense of morals/ethics. I however think its immoral to buy something with meat in, just to throw the meat away. An animal died for no purpose, that to me is worse.

AmericanEskimoDoge · 16/10/2018 13:29

She sounds stupid-- and what's worse, incredibly annoying.

The commentary ("poor thing") as she picked out the pieces of chicken seems to indicate a certain amount of performance. I'd probably just ignore her "vegetarianism" entirely (and indulge in the occasional eye-roll when I was sure she couldn't see it).
