The Assassination of Katie Hopkins?

Snowymountainsalways · 15/10/2018 13:55

Am I the only one who thinks this show is incredibly distasteful? I am not a fan of Katie Hopkins but I recognise that she is in fact a human being with feelings and has children. What are her children to make of this? How does she explain this to them? And her family? It must be deeply offensive.

It is one thing to explore the power of social media etc and quite another to have show written like this about someone who is still very much alive and well.

What are your thoughts?

In my opinion KH is a carefully constructed brand. This show will keep her in the public eye, which is where she feels most comfortable.
I don't fear for her rights to free speech, either now or in the future.
Even at her most epic nasty levels, she has not been admonished in a significant way...unless you count the Jack Monroe case outcome and her bankruptcy.
If you think about it, KH has been an architect of this sort of TV. The nasty tone that seems to revel in the idea of someone dying a public, violent death is not a million miles from the tone she often sets in her pieces. KH has not and never will be an ambassador for warm snuggles and hugs and as such, can not expect much more than she receives.
As for her kids. Well, they are her responsibility and I think as a parent she has left them open to awful ridicule now and in the future which is something I am sure doesn't sit to heavily on her shoulders. Poor kids and all that but if their mother wont regulate her nastiness there isn't much anyone else can do about that

Loonoon · 15/10/2018 14:51

I would have some sympathy if I thought KH actually believed the bile she spouts but I don’t think she does. She deliberately finds offensive controversial things to say in order to court publicity and the money that comes with it. I doubt very much she actually believed any of it as much of it seemed to be contradictory.
It worked for a while but in order to remain controversial she ended up going too far and now the publicity she gets no longer works in her favour.

wafflyversatile · 15/10/2018 14:55

Judging by your comment about white british women having no rights, I suspect you agree with her more than you are willing to admit.

longwayoff · 15/10/2018 14:56

Thanks bombardier. Looks acceptable to me. If the review is correct she has been treated far more thoughtfully than she treats others. Jerry Springer the Opera was extremely entertaining and the sky didn't fall in on us as the newspapers frothed and moaned. Probably wouldn't spend money on a ticket for this though, there's little humour in Hopkins' blathering and I couldn't face 90 minutes of being reminded of her.

ElainaElephant · 15/10/2018 14:57

It's not 'about Katie Hopkins being dead'. It's about social media, the power of media, justice, the obsession with celebrity etc.

And Katie Hopkins doesn't think about other before she spreads lies about them. And refuses to backtrack when given an easy out. So if she doesn't care about the feelings of other individuals and their children, why should everyone else care about hers?

peardropexplodes · 15/10/2018 15:00

YANBU. It's really distasteful and purile.

Lweji · 15/10/2018 15:01

I suspect you'll have missed the point of the show, OP.

It’s really not a case of the production ‘sinking to her level’ OP. Yes it has a sensationalist title but it is not a movement calling for KH’s death.Confused

Either you’ve completely misunderstood what the play is about and its themes, or you have an axe to grind on KH’s behalf. Either way, in my opinion, your distaste is unwarranted.

DarlingNikita · 15/10/2018 15:13

YABU. She needs to worry about explaining her work and her expressed views to her children. That is not the responsibility of the general public.

And you really haven't understood the play, OP.

LividAtDolphins · 15/10/2018 15:26

What are her children to make of this? How does she explain this to them? And her family?

Lol. Maybe she could start with it as a lesson on "actions have consequences".

"People don't like your mum because she's a horrible person". That's her own fault, nobody else's.

purplecraze · 15/10/2018 15:27

Kate Hopkins is a vile hate preacher, but not on the same scale as this vile piece of work. Nice to know it’ll cost us £2 million to keep him safe too. Sorry it’s Daily fail but its true.

BertrandRussell · 15/10/2018 15:30

" Are we going to muzzle everyone we disagree with?"

Nope. She can say what she wants to say within the law And other people can react to it as they want to within the law.

BertrandRussell · 15/10/2018 15:31

Why do you think Choudrey is worse than Hopkins?

treezylover · 15/10/2018 15:32

Katie Hopkins has feelings? I want proof.

Lweji · 15/10/2018 15:34

On a side note:
Newspaper complains about bill to protect former inmate by publishing huge photo of him. Hmm
Well done, Daily Fail.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/10/2018 15:35

If people had any sense, they'd ignore her, not watch a single thing with her in it. Treat her as a troll and send her to Coventry. That would work. Talking about her just gives oxygen to her and encourages tv producers to think up more inane programmes.

And so it continues.

If we really don't like her and don't just say so, secretly loving to hate her, then why are we giving her the attention that she craves - and doesn't deserve?

Madness.

Bombardier25966 · 15/10/2018 15:38

@purplecraze Hate preachers are abhorrent, whichever side of the argument they're on. I'd be interested in the costs incurred by the police due to Hopkins, Waxey Lemon and their type. I doubt there'd be much in it when you added it up.

All as vile as each other, but all UK citizens so equally entitled to use public services. Except that the media will portray the named individuals very differently, and hence the public perception will differ dramatically. Which is exactly what the play is about.

Lweji · 15/10/2018 15:38

Strictly, she doesn't seem to be "in it". And it doesn't even seem to be "about her" as such.

I suspect that, for something that has her name on it, she'd be very disappointed.

katseyes7 · 15/10/2018 15:57

@ToadOfSadness l thought the same too....

user348903890 · 15/10/2018 16:02

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

purplecraze · 15/10/2018 16:03

Bertrandrussell why do i think he’s worse? are you for real. Don’t waste my time, i’m going before you wind me up anymore with your ridiculous, goady and confrontational statements. Before i go, here’s one reason, but for you to actually have to ask that......i’m speechless.Unbelievable. I’m out of here.

“Choudary, led the banned terror organisation Al-Muhajiroun, whose disciples included London Bridge attacker Khuram Butt and the killers of Fusilier Lee Rigby – Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale.”

slimjemima · 15/10/2018 16:03

If they are using her name she will be getting a rake off as well as publicity

Lweji · 15/10/2018 16:06

purplecraze and you don't think Katie's words won't have inflamed right wing nuts?

It's a good thing for her that she isn't Muslim instead of a white British female.

TheDarkPassenger · 15/10/2018 16:11

I sort of agree with you but then also, I wouldn’t really bat an eyelid if she did get assassinated.

Probably says more about me than her but hey, my morals slip sometimes too, im sure she has some vague idea what that’s like

Lweji · 15/10/2018 16:14

Yes, when I think of all the journalists that have been murdered recently for uncovering uncomfortable truths, and innocents suffering from hate crimes, I wouldn't feel very sorry for Katie.
