The Assassination of Katie Hopkins?

Snowymountainsalways · 15/10/2018 13:55

Am I the only one who thinks this show is incredibly distasteful? I am not a fan of Katie Hopkins but I recognise that she is in fact a human being with feelings and has children. What are her children to make of this? How does she explain this to them? And her family? It must be deeply offensive.

It is one thing to explore the power of social media etc and quite another to have show written like this about someone who is still very much alive and well.

What are your thoughts?

She is a professional bottom feeder, she thrives off this shit. I wouldn't be surprised if she had cut a deal for royalties.

longwayoff · 15/10/2018 14:20

I have no idea what you're talking about other than the vile, and now short of cash katie (work harder katie! Put in those 40 hour days that we sad slackers cant achieve. Hope you can pay your rent and dont have to claim UC) hopkins is still keeping us company what is this? Tv? Book? Biopic? Seen more than enough of her really.

Snowymountainsalways · 15/10/2018 14:20

Totally for free speech, but writing about a living person's assassination and death is in very poor taste.

I expect if she had the money her lawyers she would be instructing them by now...

There have been comedies about terrorism - 3 lions, that weird puppet sketch show with the skeleton terrorist. Is that the kind of thing you’re getting at?

I also don’t think you’re giving the musical a fair airing. It sounds like it’s pretty reflective and gives a fair representation of why KH is so loved by some. It’s not like it’s a straightforward hate piece.

Have you actually seen it?

SillySallySingsSongs · 15/10/2018 14:23

I can't stand her, but that is vile and still would be even if she had no family

I agree

IAmBeyonceAlways · 15/10/2018 14:23

YANBU - I think it is awful too

Bombardier25966 · 15/10/2018 14:24

Is this the play you're referring to OP? If so you might want to read what it is about before spouting faux concern for the witch.

AuntBeastie · 15/10/2018 14:24

Writing shows about her assassination is really vile and another form of intimidation.

Why are you defending KH’s right to share controversial views and be distasteful and offensive, but not defending the artists behind this musical for doing the same? Surely the same rule applies to them both?

And if talking about an assassination is a step too far for you, how come KH talking about a final solution isn’t?

Bombardier25966 · 15/10/2018 14:25

I expect if she had the money her lawyers she would be instructing them by now...

For what exactly, what offence/ tort do you believe has been committed?

Snowymountainsalways · 15/10/2018 14:27

Bomb Yes I have read it already thank you for posting the link for others, and it is about KH being dead. I think it is poor taste and I will not be buying a ticket any time soon put it that way.

It is a cheap shot aimed at a woman who clearly has quite a few MH issues already of her own.

OP posts:
SummerGems · 15/10/2018 14:27

The media are responsible for the fact that KH is even known to the public, and the public are partly responsible for her fame because they have watched/listen to her, and yes, even if you listen to someone to express your public outrage you are still partly responsible for their rise to fame or even infamy.

And now that the press and the public have built her up, paid her to express her views and then turned her into a hate figure, those same media and public are turning her demise into more entertainment. KH isn’t KH all by herself. Those same people who built her up are the same people now knocking her down and enjoying her demise. Grim. Who the hell watches any of this shite anyway and why?

I don’t much care for the woman or her views but the truth is that her views are not unique. Plenty of people not in the public eye express similar hideous opinions. KH is just a soft target.

TheStoic · 15/10/2018 14:28

So you haven’t seen it?

AuntBeastie · 15/10/2018 14:30

Weird place for you to put your sympathy, OP. There are many people treated far, far worse than KH who is absolutely the author of her own misfortune.

NotACleverName · 15/10/2018 14:30

For the umpteenth sodding time, free speech does not mean that you can run your vile mouth off saying whatever the bloody hell you want, as Abu Hopkins seems to do, with no recourse.

It is a cheap shot aimed at a woman who clearly has quite a few MH issues already of her own.

Racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and victim blaming are not side effects of mental health issues.

Thomasinaa · 15/10/2018 14:31

They're exploiting her fame. She feels that it puts her at risk, and I can understand that.

Bombardier25966 · 15/10/2018 14:32

That is a tiny element of the storyline. It is about free speech, social media, the cult of celebrity and the double standards in the justice system.

Again, what do you suggest Hopkins sues for?

SpoonBlender · 15/10/2018 14:32

@Bombardier25966 Well called!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 15/10/2018 14:32

She has brought all of this on herself.

WorriesGalore · 15/10/2018 14:35

LOL. By the logic here Corbyn and sadick khan are fair game, aren't they? No matter what anyone's opinion or politics is, death threats are not funny or to be encouraged.

AuntBeastie · 15/10/2018 14:37

Oh my god, it’s not a death threat. Why don’t you do even a minute of googling to inform yourself so that you don’t look like a complete idiot?

Fair game to being mentioned in a work of performance art, yes.

Another one that hasn't even read what the play is about.

ToeToToe · 15/10/2018 14:38

I saw a Newsnight review on this show a few months ago, when they were setting up rehearsals.

It was extremely interesting, and not at all what you're thinking, OP.

In a nutshell, it's about hounding of people on social media for their opinions, the polarisation of debate.
